Clayton Scores KISS Victory, But Stanbrough Collects Record Third Championship
July 8, 2007 –- The finale of the 2007 King of Indiana Sprint Series was one for the record books as Missouri’s Daron Clayton edged Jon Stanbrough for his first KISS series victory, while Stanbrough wrapped up his third series championship. After battling past Stanbrough, Clayton came out on top of an intense duel that saw the two repeatedly change spots until the checkers. Brady Short finished third, followed by Kyle Wissmiller and Jeff Bland Jr.
While it was the first KISS win of Clayton’s career, Stanbrough secured his third championship and is the only driver who can claim more than one KISS title. He also holds the record for most victories (11), well ahead of Tony Elliott and Kevin Briscoe who have three each.
While Stanbrough raced into the lead of the 30-lap event that was sanctioned by the Midwest Sprint Car Series, from his front row starting spot. Short followed into second, with Clayton third in his family-owned DRC. On the fifth circuit, Clayton dove inside of Short in turn one and when they banged wheels, he shot past. Using parts of the track where no one else was running, Clayton began to attack Stanbrough two laps later.
On the ninth lap, Clayton dove under Stanbrough in turn one, but Stanbrough returned the favor in three. Clayton cut sharply left and hustled under Stanbrough and into the lead as they exited turn four. For the next 21 circuits, it was game on! Stanbrough battled back, passing Clayton with precise slide-jobs, but each time Clayton raced back into the lead in the next turn. Stanbrough made a final pass on the final lap, but again Clayton fought back into the lead in turn two, then outran Stanbrough through three and four for the victory.
The anticipated battle for the point crown between Shane Hollingsworth and Stanbrough failed to materialize when Hollingsworth tangled with another car at the start of the fourth heat and dropped out with a flat rear tire. When while racing quickly through the pack early in the C-Main, Hollingsworth was unable to avoid another car that got out of shape on the backstretch and flipped three times, ending his night. Short moved to second in the points with his third place finish in the feature.
