Who should decide how soon a driver can return to racing after a concussion? Should the driver, the track, a doctor or others decide when a driver can come back. We know alot more about concussions than we used to. A midget driver told me that about 1950 he crashed a midget at East Moline. They turned the car right side up. Driver was knocked out. They slaped him in face to wake him up and pushed him off to finish race. Jan Opperman and Neil Bonnett are two examples of drivers who should have never been allowed to race again. When Jan returned to racing he once got in the wrong car to race and he at times did not know people that he used to know well. They used to tell how Neil Bonnett and Bobby Allison used to try to converse after both had severe head injuries. Neil returned to racing after a long lay off, and died at Pocano a short time later.

Neil Bonnett died in Daytona of a basular skull fracture (same as Dale E) during a Daytona practice crash, Bobby Allison suffered career ending injuries as a result of a Pocono crash.
Both accidents were due to tire failure during the "tire wars" time frame when Hoosier wanted a piece of the NASCAR pie.

Got knocked out a few times in my hockey days, most of it was my fault as I didn't wear a helmet most of my playing days. Went to the dressing room once when I asked a teammate what rink we were playing at after one of the hits, at the time it was considered pretty funny and none of us took it as a serious deal that it was. I always thought it was strange a few days later when I couldn't remember who won or what the score was, lol....

VERY tough at the grassroots level to make a call on this. Its not like there are infield care centers at your local Saturday night tracks. Ultimately its up to the drivers and car owners. When someone seems off the car owners need to step in and not allow their drivers on track (Keen at Knoxville). Im no expert but it seems like the most damage is done as you layer your concussions. The best way to prevent that seems to be making sure your FULLY healed from the previous (or even 1st).Wives, girlfrends, friends.... honestly we are all responsible to say something if something seems not right.
