I was just sitting here reading the thread about camping at nationals, which made me think of that really long thread about the drunks at nationals. It made me come to a conclusion.

I'm never going to the Knoxville Nationals! Don't get me wrong, I love to party and have a great time but every time I read this forum about Knoxville everyone is bitching about something. I've been to Knoxville twice over the past 15 years and didn't enjoy the racing anyhow (granted neither show was Nationals). The way I look at it is I will save my money to go enjoy other stuff and I'll just wait for the keyboard jockeys to tell me all the stupid things I missed every year!

If listening to everyone complain about something here on this forum deters you from attending the Nationals, then it should also keep you from attending any races. People are gonna piss and moan about anything and everything. Don't let a few bad apples...

I've yet to hear anyone say a bad thing about the Trophy Cup. While I want to make the Nationals some day, I would never sacrafice the Cup to do so.

Yes, there will be a few people who are idiots but 99% of the time you will love the experience. I have been going since '85. Took my son for the first time in '87 and we haven't missed a year since. This year we took his 7 year old son and he hasn't stopped talking about Knoxville since.

We've already got our hotel reservations and vacation planned.

Knoxville may have a few problems but it's far better than most tracks I've been to.

the knoxville nationals is way more than just the racing, its like the thankgiving holiday for racers and race fans, and those gather for several days of celebrating the sport of sprint car racing most opf thebest active drivers, dozens of retired legends, people from many diffeerent forms of racing and sports all there to enjoy one of the toughest formats for the biggest purse at the most prestigous event. I sure do not understand how any auto enthusiast can not be impressed by a sprint car running around that track ( of course some people do not realize just how fast they are going so a must is sit in turn one front row for a few laps, or even better stand as close to track inside of turn three and watch them dive in there), There are many events in motorsports that are more than just the racing, in motorcycles the springfield mile and the peoria TT, Drag car the Indy nationals, nascar, daytona, off shore boats Key west world finals, modifieds syracuse mile, dirt stock cars the boone supernations, midgets the chili bowl, late models the world 100, just a few of the events that should be must see for real racing fans

I agree with everyone else. If you went, you would not be disappointed. (unless you are EXTREMELY picky) You should at least go once just to grade the experience for yourself. I have been going 10 years now and I can compare it to no other that I have attended.

As far as the camping, see one of my other posts relating to this topic. You rent a patch of grass with power and water hookups. The patch of grass I rent every year is the same one. I plug into the electric and hook up to the water. When I am done, I unhook both and pull away. I don't know what else the campground is supposed to do for me. Have strippers? No one puts a gun to the heads of the people camping there, but every year they pay the fee and set up camp. And every year it is pretty much filled up, save a few sites. Have a group of 6-8 every year and no one has every complained in my group about the camping.

go and check it out.

I was fortunate enough to have attended 19 of the Knoxville Nationals beginning in 1972. Even had a run of 10 years in a row. To not go because of what you read on some message board is your decision. Hope you enjoy sitting on the porch when you are older thinking about all the places you didn't go.

don't take this personally meatbag, I'm just plain-talking; why do you give a shit about what some keyboard jockeys type? if you're basing your declaration of never attending knoxville speedway again on your past experiences there, that's just fine. but, I don't believe that is worth posting a thread over. no one cares. you're complaining about people complaining, & complaining about a wildly popular track. I thought this thread was going to be informative & interesting! dammit! happy halloween everyone!

People Bitch and get drunk at every race. That don't stop you from going to those races. I found out in most cases if you mind your own business, and go about it your own way with your own friends you usually don't have any problems. Me I laugh at all the fall down drunks, and think to myself what a waste of money they spent. I don't get it spend 30 to 40 bucks to see a show, and get so hammered they don't know who set quick time let alone the winner of the race. Hell I've seen guys so shit faced the second day of a two day show they don't even make it in the gate. Wake up the next day, ticket in pocket still, and be pissed because their buddies couldn't get him up to go in. SAD if you ask me. Does that keep me from enjoying my weekend? HELL NO!!!!!!

I love when some of you say "keyboard jockeys" like it's an insult when really you're the same thing, just perhaps on the other side of the fence.

1) As I stated in original post, I personally didn't care for the racing or track conditions my 2 trips there previously. 2)People on here ARE NOT the deciding factor on whether or not I attend, but it sure doesn't help with a 10 hour drive! Just seems like year round there is always discussion about attending the GREATEST race of the year, but I can see a lot of good racing within 2 or 3 hours instead of 10. 3)Last...I think I'll have to wait for Schatz to not be racing before attending, if I drove 10 hours to watch him stand on the podium I would puke all over everyone in the stands and start a whole other 44 page thread lol

At Natuinals I talked to a few race fans from Australia. One watched nationals from Sprint Car Hall of Fame. He came down after races ans said the Nationals were the greatest thing he had every seen. He sais he was coming back next year. I also talked to a guy that flew from Australia to Calif. then to Knoxville. Only problem he was at Knoxville, Tenn. They rent a car and drove back to Knox., Ia. He thought the nationals were great and was coming back. These guys spent a ton of money to see nationals. What is it that the keyboard wizards do not like?

Been to 26 Nationals. No problems. Greatest show on earth. Basing your decision on whether to go to the Nationals or not on a couple NON NATIONAL shows seems a little silly to me.

If your not going to the nationals untill Schatz is done you will be in an old folks home. You will miss seeing one of the best sprintcar drivers of all time. Too bad!!!

I don't go there anymore for a lot of reasons, mostly distance and expense, but I keep it to myself. I learned after too much trial and mostly error that expressing my opinion about certain things on these racing boards is about as popular as a turd in the punch bowl. It's a long ways and a week in Iowa puts a huge hole in the budget and along with the required vacation it's way more than a non-race-fan wife will tolerate. In our family every dollar spent on racing requires that I bring a few grandkids and spend two dollars on non-racing. The "expense" of racing isn't really the actual racing so much as everything else that comes with it. That keeps me close to home but missing certain races doesn't bother me anymore after watching these cars go in circles since 1960. It's like riding a bike, miss a month and when I finally get back out there nothing much has changed. wink

Do yourself a favor and don't skip the Nationals because you are comparing track conditions of non-Nationals show. I promise you this: if you go to the 4 days of the 410 nationals, you will likely see at least 2 nights of excellent racing and the other two nights will be good at the very least. You may even get a year with 3 or 4 nights of excellent racing, as some are.

As far as watching Schatz on the podium? The A-main is almost a bonus after all of the racing and transferring that goes on for the 3 previous days. I am ready to go back just thinking about it!

Anybody give me a count down?

I was just sitting here reading the thread about camping at nationals, which made me think of that really long thread about the drunks at nationals. It made me come to a conclusion.

Oh come on. Tell me there's no drunks at other sporting events, festivals, concerts, and even local racetracks. But hey you want to skip the biggest sprint car race in the Universe that's your prerogative. As for the camping, I'm not a camper...stay at local home. And the racing at the Nats is top notch, especially Wed and Thurs. don't compare a weekly show at Knoxville to the Nationals, not the same caliber and quality of drivers. The people who bitch on this forum usually have nothing better to do. Ignore them. I've been going since '95 and met so many wonderful people and have developed friendships for life. Its not just a race, its an experience. Look at it this way, it's not always gonna be perfect, but its what you make of it.

The 7 days we spend in Knoxville every year for last 17 years has been awesome! The atmosphere the people all the race cars... They party's the dingus... Camping with thousands of people who all are there for same reason. Did I even mention the racing yet! Yeah going to the racing the worst part of the day! Haha sheesh!
