I read this weekend that Speed Channel is not going to cover Formula 1 in 2013.
Reading further it seems its owner Fox Sports plans on re-branding Speed as Fox Sports 1 and it will no longer be a motorsports only channel.

Speeds coverage has went way downhill over last few years. Seems every time I turn it on its 'my classic car' 'monster jam' auto auction, ect ect... One hour a week they mention sprint cars, and in that one hour it gets about 5 minutes.
Speeds about like MTV.. The music television channel that doesn't play any music, just reality shows....

They have lost the compass that built them a long time ago. Too politiaclly correct, catering to the fans that go to events rather than to races. I have a special place in my heart for Charlotte. I watched Cale Yarbrough win the Miller 500 for my first live NASCAR event there. I was bored watching on Saturday night. I would much rather watch live coverage of the short track nationals than NASCAR on SPEED any day.

For those of us who wouldn't walk across the street to watch a F1 race I don't see this as being such a big deal.
I found this over at www.motorracingnetwork.com and thought I would share.
NBC Sports Group and Formula One Management, the top international open-wheel racing series promoter, announced a four-year partnership today that begins with the 2013 season and provides NBC Sports Group with exclusive U.S. media rights to all Formula 1™ Grand Prix races, qualifying and practice sessions on all platforms and devices.
ON A SIMILAR NOTE....
With two full seasons left on their current television contract, NASCAR and FOX Sports Media Group announced today an extensive new eight-year, multiplatform media rights agreement that ensures FSMG’s broadcast of NASCAR racing through 2022.
Under terms of the new agreement, FSMG also significantly increases its digital rights to include “TV Everywhere” live race streaming of its portion of the season for the first time ever beginning in 2013.

I cant believe they have lasted this long. They lost their way years ago when it went from Speedvision to Speed Channel. A 24/7 motorsports channel and they cant produce a weekly dirt track highlight show...please

Wave of the future for racing, especially dirt track, is through internet streaming. Figure out how to tie in your internet feed onto your big screen and you are set.

I am not half as sad hearing this news as I was about TNN going away. The past 5years or more, whenever I would turn on SPEED, it had 1 of the 20shows that deals with Nascar or an auto auction. I like Nascar, but I do not need every other show to be about it. I miss the days when TNN had the Outlaws, off road 4x4, Monster Trucks, ASA, Arca, Busch, Cup, Modifieds, Boat Racing, Tractor Pulls, etc.

I would rather have Larry Mac and Kenny Wallace ,as to have know it all "brother Mikey Waltrip" and his stupid pie hole spewing all that woulda coulda shoulda crap in a never ending opinion of everything. Is there ever anything that this lame brain can't comment about, sick of him and his brother and the NBA reject too,I don't care how many cars they own, sponsor or yap about they those three are the pure pits. bring back Thursday night thunder and more sprint car races it doesn't have to be the Outlaws either, how about three weeks at Attica, two weeks at Skagit, and five Sunday nights at Husets,it would kick some butt and a couple Saturdays at Lincoln or Grandview, now talk about grassroots racing, that would sell the heck out of those shows.Yes, nothing against the Despain hoo -rah show on Sundays but Husets would be awesome on National t.v.

Housen...I like your idea but the all-mighty dollar plays into it.
Last I knew it cost "about" $45K to do a taping, editing, etc for a decent show to be shown "later" and I don't think the advertising buck$ are there for this to be done.
Shoot, if I had my way there would be a 24-hour sprint car channel with an occasional posting from some Posse member as to why Larson is Posse!

Im with the 24 hour sprint car channel... Use sprint car and dirt car advertisements. My dad used to laugh at me when i was young and said they needed a 24 hour sports network. He wouldnt be laughing at ESPN money these days. The problem is, only 3 percent of Americans know what a sprint car is.

I agree 100% on that. I hope to be able to get a few IRA races streaming live or at least delayed next season. I will need a few sponsors on board and that is the tricky part.

The demise of Speed is not due to the lack of televised sprint car racing.....
These television networks are in the business of making money, not catering to a small fraction of the target audience. If sprint cars on TV made money, they would be on TV all of the time. Unfortunately, it must make more financial sense to show a car auction or another episode of Pinks than to televise sprint cars.
If you are reading this it means you love sprint car racing and you probably can't understand why everyone else doesn't love it. But lets face it, our sport's biggest race (The Knoxville Nationals) has the attendance of an average Major League Baseball game. http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance/_/sort/homePct
Our sport is the most exciting thing I've ever seen. But we are just a small blip on the radar of the sports world.
The future of our sport is the internet. So get a fast connection, a big screen, and a capable browser.

Noticed today during the airing of Belle-Claire on Lucas On The Edge that the logo in the upper right said FOX Sports above the normal SPEED logo -- haven't noticed that before today... but haven't been watching a LOT of SPEED lately... mostly MLB network since the Cardinals are on their way to #12in'12!!!!

Just a thought but whats peoples opinion on this:
Did NASCAR become famous because of people loving it so it only made sense to televise it? Or did the people in charge of NASCAR see the future and got the sport on television and television made it as popular as it is?
Its kind of a what came first the chicken or the egg question but it is interesting to me, cause in my eyes if the answer is that television has made Nascar the popularity it is, then there is no reason to believe that if the right deal came along to get Sprint car racing into a prime spotlight, that people wouldn't say hey whats this, this is pretty exciting to watch, you mean they're not only focused on drafting and fuel mileage and there isn't time in the middle for me to take a 3 hour nap.
