Sherman Rallies From 15th for ASCS Canyon Region win at Manzanita

Lonnie Wheatley, PHOENIX, Ariz. (June 30, 2007) – There was no lack of drama in Saturday night's 30-lap American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region feature atop Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval, as Jeremy Sherman charged from the eighth row to capture his eighth series win of the year.

Piloting Fred Bryan's Wesmar-powered F&E Development No. 77 Maxim, Sherman worked his way through the field and then emerged atop some dicey final laps with Charles Davis, Jr., to secure the win.

While Sherman worked his way forward from 15th and Davis battled from the second row outside, it was polesitter Andrew Reinbold jumping into the early lead before Mike Martin assumed the point.

Sherman took command in the final rounds, with Davis settling for second. Jeff Henry captured the show position, with Martin and Josh Pelkey rounding out the top five.

R.J. Johnson crossed the stripe sixth, with Bob Ream, Jr., Michael Colegrove, Bernie Smith and Chris Bonneau completing the top ten.

Smith, Bruce St. James and Davis topped heat race action.

PRESS RELEASE, PLACERVILLE SPEEDWAY, PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA
FROM THE OFFICE OF JOHN PADJEN MOTORPORTS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, SUNDAY, JULY 1, 2007

Full moon shines over wild night of racing during seventh event at Placerville
Forsberg, Streeter, Brown and McClure celebrate in victory lane

By Bill Sullivan

PLACERVILLE,CA – Racing on a new track surface beneath the glow of a full moon, competitors at Placerville Speedway participated in one of the wildest nights of racing Saturday night for the seventh championship event of the season. While four drivers enjoys the spoils of victory, many others will be working hard in the days to come to make repairs in time for the Wednesday night July 4th Spectacular.

In the winged sprint cars division, Andy Forsberg of Auburn returned to victory lane after a long dry spell. Forsberg celebrated with Lathrop’s Matt Streeter who won the wingless feature event. Pure Stock driver Mike McClure and Pro Stock driver Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City both scored victories in their respective divisions.

In the Hoosier Racing Tires sprint car division the feature event took several attempts to start on Saturday night. The first attempt saw Forsberg overtake Placerville’s Jimmy Trulli for the lead only to see the red flag wave when a multi-car collision ensued on the back stretch originally involving Auburn’s Dan Gooder, Troy Machado of Elk Grove, and Elk Grove’s Shannon Newton.

Machado went upside down after becoming caught in traffic and forced up the back stretch embankment. After Machado was struck by Gooder, Newton and several oncoming cars and aftershock from the incident broguth Calistoga’s Mike Benson and Placerville’s C.J. Humphreys together in the third turn, sending Benson upside down as well.

No injuries were reported from the damaging accidents. On the second attempt on the start the full moon seemingly continued to haunt the event as Shingle Springs’ Justin Johnson flipped wildly through turns three and four. Johnson was uninjured as well and the accident prompted track officials to restart the race in single file fashion with Trulli in front of Forsberg followed by Elk Grove’s Greg DeCaires and Humphreys.

When the green flag waved, Trulli took the lead as Forsberg tested different lines of the track in an effort to close in on last week’s feature winner. It took Forsberg 12 laps to set up a pass for the lead. On the 13th lap, the driver thay call “Mr. Excitement” muscled his way around Trulli in the fourth turn for the lead he would never relinquish.

Forsberg went on to win his second feature event of the year. Trulli finished in second followed by DeCaires who battled throughout the event for the third position with Colby Wiesz of Colfax and Humphreys. Wiesz placed fourth followed by Humphreys.

“We have been having a bad couple of months. Just in the past month I think I have been through four wings and two whole cars not to mention a whole lot of bolt on parts,” said Forsberg. “Tonight Alan Padjen deserves some serious credit for this track. Normally when you add new clay to a track like this it comes apart easy the first couple of nights but tonight this place was great. We might make history Wednesday with the first July Fourth race without a dry dusty track.”

In the Wingless Sprint car division, Streeter drove to his first Placerville victory of 2007. The victory alone was not the big story for Streeter, however. The fact that the young driver, that is known for his skills not only wingless sprint cars but midgets and winged cars, held of Clayton’s Darrell Hanestad to accomplish the feat was a huge accomplishment.

Streeter started the feature event on the pole with Sparky Howard of Santa Rosa on the outside. With the waving of the green flag he took command of the field while Hanestad worked his way towards the front and into second place to begin chasing the leader. A veteran driver with a Gold Cup championship to his credits, Hanestad is one of the wingless division’s toughest drivers to beat.

Despite repeated challenges by Hanestad driving down low on the track, Streeter used his on the edge driving style and maintained the lead to the checkered flag over Hanestad. Howard finished in the third position over Kent Stephens and Brandon Davis.

In the Coors Light Pure Stock division, Pollock Pines driver Brian Stevens took the lead of the 20-lap feature at the green flag. Stevens drove to a lead of several car lengths until a caution flag at the 13 lap mark gathered the field and place former champion Mike McClure at the leaders rear bumper for the restart.

When the final green flag of the race waved, McClure went to the low side of turn two and pulled beside the leader down the back stretch. After racing side by side on the straight away, McClure gained the advantage entering the third turn and took the lead. McClure drove to his first win of the year followed by Stevens, Jason Englund of Citrus Heights, Robert Roush of Sacramento and Eldorado’s Brian Buchholz.

In the Corona Pro Stocks , point leader Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City drove to his sixth victory of the season. Brown has won all but one event this year about his family owned #5x built and wrenched by his father and former driver, Dan Brown Sr.

At the waving of the green flag Brown overtook pole sitter Forryst Carnett of Placerville for the lead. Carnett remained within striking distance of Brown for much of the race that also saw it’s share of mechanical carnage. Saturday’s event began with 12 cars and concluded with four cars running.

One of the most severe incidents took place on lap nine when John Krehiel and David Brown of Sacramento collided entering the third turn. The two drivers blocked the high side of the track and left Camino’s Del Tremblay with no opportunity to avoid a collision. Tremblay collided into the read of Brown and all three drivers suffered a great amount of damage, ending their night on the tow truck.

Once racing resumed Brown drove to the win followed by Carnett, Wayne Trimble of Auburn and Jeff Arbogast of Auburn. Mike Moran of Rancho Cordova was scored in the fifth position as he was the final competitor to leave the track with damage prior to the checkered flag.

Racing resumes at Placerville Speedway this Wednesday for the July Fourth Spectacular. The event will benefit the El Dorado County Food Bank and the victims of the Angora Fire. The gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing beginning at 5:30, one hour earlier than normal. The races will conclude with a fireworks display funded by John Padjen Motorsports and the El Dorado County Fair. Tim Kaeding continues domination of Thunderbowl Raceway
By Gary Thomas

Tulare, CA - June 30, 2007... San Jose’s Tim Kaeding has shown time and time again that he can start from anywhere in the field and move forward. Put him on the front row, however, and the result is often the same as this past Saturday night at Thunderbowl Raceway when the former King of California put together a flag to flag performance picking up his second win of the season in Tulare. The 28 year-old charger had to fend off a late race restart move from Chico’s Jonathan Allard though, but Kaeding was on his toes and took advantage when Allard left the door open in turn three. The victory also marked the 30th time he has visited victory lane in Golden State Challenge competition.

The 30 lap main event started out with T. Kaeding on the pole, and father Brent Kaeding on the outside. The first start was a no go as Rio Vista’s Dan Simpson spun on the inside of turn four. The field realigned, but the second start was disaster and it saw Evan Suggs and Brett Miller, the top two rookies with the Golden State Challenge Series, get upside down on the front straightaway. Suggs was unfortunately not able to restart, but Miller was and got pushed back out to rejoin the field. Visalia’s Danny Faria Jr. was also involved in the melee and he was also not able to get back out to restart the race.

The third start of the 30 lap feature was able to get off without a hitch and it saw T. Kaeding jump into the lead aboard the Tom Rolfe Trucking, J.F. McCray Plastering No. 10 with B. Kaeding falling into second. Jonathan Allard made his presence known early on and put the pressure on BK for the runner-up spot. The defending King of California was all over the 12-time champ as they entered traffic and on lap six Allard made a great high side move to split Kaeding & a lap car to put the Williams Motorsports No. 0 into second place. Fairmont, IN’s Brandon Wimmer was the next driver to challenge BK as he closed in rapidly on the Al’s Roofing Supply No. 69 and on lap nine he took the third position.

A caution came out on lap 14 and after that we seemingly couldn’t get off the lap as cautions and reds slowed the pace of the 30 lap contest. The 1/3 mile became one lane on the bottom and made for some tricky conditions which bit a lot of the competitors. When the caution flag bevy was finally finished after being on lap 14 for nearly 20 minutes, BK found a good line to get under Wimmer and reclaim the third position. The final caution of the race came out on lap 22 and during the yellow period, Salinas driver Ronnie Day slowed to a stop on the backstretch. Day was running in the fifth position and he was unable to get the Ridgeline Framing No. 1 back under fire and he was pushed to the pits to continue his snake-bitten year.

Throughout all the cautions and slow downs of the race, T. Kaeding was running up front with no worries as he had an extremely fast car and was doing a terrific job whenever he had to deal with traffic. When the green flag came back out, however, Allard dove to the inside in turn one to take the lead of the race. Entering turn three though, Allard carried a bit too much speed and Kaeding was able to seize an opening and squeeze to the inside of the 0 machine and retake the lead off of turn four.

That was all she wrote and TK went on to record yet another Thunderbowl Raceway victory and his second GSC win of the season. The super-talented driver showed again that he’s one of the best drivers in the country with a near mistake free performance on a surface that wasn’t exactly a typical TK track. "I wish we could have had a track where we could have gotten up near the fence and put on a little better show for you guys, but I’ll take a win and I’m happy with it," the defending Trophy Cup champ said after the race. He continued, "I want to thank Tom Rolfe Trucking, all our sponsors, the crew and all you fans for coming out tonight." T. Kaeding is set to run in California till the GSC season ends, then he and the Tom Rolfe Trucking, BR Motorsports, Platinum Powder Coating No. 10 team are headed back east to do some traveling.

Allard hung on for a second place finish in the GT Trends, K & N Filters No. 0 and B. Kaeding recorded a third place finish in the Kaeding Performance, Selco Heating & Air No. 69. Coming home fourth was Wimmer in the Roth Motorsports, HR Cattle DTR Transport No. 83jr.

The fifth place finisher was the show of the night as Visalia’s Ricci Faria charged through the pack putting on a breathtaking, rim riding performance. Faria was running eighth when he was involved in one of the lap 14 cautions and had to go to the back of the pack. The driver of the Darrell Green Trucking, Betty Brite Cleaners, TTC No. 89 got up on the wheel and put his car much higher than anybody else, especially in turns three and four where he looked like he was going smack the wall on multiple occasions. Faria was up to seventh with a handful of laps left and to get up to fifth he used a jaw dropping move to split Jason Statler and Trevor Green on the back stretch. Both Green and Statler were sideways heading into turn three and somehow, someway, Faria fit his car between the pair to take over fifth.

Sixth place went to the Fisher/Main Motorsports No. 35m of Oroville’s Sean Becker. Los Gatos driver Jason Statler made his GSC return aboard the DF Rios Construction No. 00 and went from 15th to seventh in the feature. Even with getting upside down on lap 14, last weeks winner Willie Croft of Sacramento brought home an eighth place finish in the Holey Smokes BBQ No. 29. Tracy’s Jason Botsford scored ninth in the Extreme Fabrication No. 29a and Selma’s Charlie Louden tallied his first top 10 with GSC this season as he finished 10th in the Louden Motorsports Super X.

Tim Kaeding started from the outside of the front row and won the dash to earn the pole for the feature. Three 10 lap heat races were run and they were won by Evan Suggs, Charlie Louden and Jason Statler. Tim Kaeding ripped off a 13.462 second lap to earn fast time in qualifying.

The accompanying Western States Modifieds event saw Paul Stone win the battle, but Tim Balding win the war as he was crowned the first ever WSM champion. All season it has seemed to be the Stone & Balding show and the pair finished one/two yet again. Stone started sixth on Saturday night and was into the lead by lap two. Balding started fourth, fell back early and methodically worked his way up to second with about 10 laps remaining. Stone held a commanding lead and although Balding closed in, Stone remained poised and picked up his second WSM win in a row. Balding brought home a second place finish and in doing so became the WSM champ and earned a free entry into the upcoming U.S. Western States Modified Nationals on September 27, 28 & 29.

The Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway will now go dark the rest of the Summer as we try to beat the sweltering Central Valley heat. The next scheduled event for the Thunderbowl will be the U.S. Western Modified Nationals which pays $20,000 to win. The next sprint car race at the 1/3 mile clay oval will be October 13 when the World of Outlaw Sprint Series returns to Tulare. The World of Outlaw action was intense in February and the October stop will be a can’t miss. Another event surely to be a can’t miss will be the 14th annual Trophy Cup presented by Trophy City. The Trophy Cup will be the final event of 2007 at the Thunderbowl and is always one of the biggest events on the West Coast. The dates for the Trophy Cup have jumped around a bit from the originally announced ones and the event will be held on November 16 & 17. Mark your calenders because you won’t want to miss the Trophy Cup which packs a two day purse of $100,000. For ticket info contact 559-688-0909

Chico’s Stephen Allard Holds off Tim Kaeding for Win
After 23 Years Sparky Howard gets His First Win; Papenhausen Wins Sideways Finish with Abouzeid; The Bartlett’s Reign Over Chico
by Troy Hennig

CHICO, CA (6-29-07) - Chico’s Stephen Allard has had his ups and downs this year racing in Northern California. Tonight was no exception. After finishing third in the second heat race the team decided to switch motors before the main event. It turned out to be the correct decision. Allard led all 25-laps to record his second feature win of the season at Silver Dollar Speedway. Yet, it wasn’t as easy as it might sound. Allard held off returning local hero Tim Kaeding to get the exciting win. In fact, with two lap’s remaining a single file restart featured Kaeding right on Allard’s bumper. “I knew Tim was coming and under the yellow I looked up at the scoreboard and saw he was in second,” said Allard. “I just told myself don’t over drive the car and hit my marks and I felt we’d be fine for the final two laps.” Allard did just that and never gave Kaeding a chance to pull something out of his hat, as he has done so many times in the past. Allard drove the Skip Jones owned #1m into victory lane. Kaeding is back at the helm of the Tom Rolfe Trucking #10 for at least until Gold Cup in September. A total of 24 drivers competed during the Feather Falls Casino Friday night championship point race. Three other divisions took to the speedway tonight along with the sprint cars. Wingless sprints, dirt modifieds and pure stocks all took turns at the speedway. In all, 82 different drivers raced around the beautifully prepared quarter-mile clay oval speedway. All of this action took place in one night of racing and finished fifteen minutes ahead of the state mandated 11:00 pm curfew.

The original start pitted Allard on the front row with Auburn’s Andy Forsberg. As the two raced into turn one Forsberg set the car and the right rear dug into the clay. This catapulted Forsberg into the air and upside down. Major frame damage was sustained and he was finished for the night. Word is, the #92 machine will miss the next few Friday nights at Chico after this recent crash. On the second attempt things went much smoother. Allard took the lead from Colby Weisz who moved into the spot Forsberg vacated. Sean Becker raced into the third spot followed by Greg DeCaires in fourth. On lap four Chris Masters spun around and brought out the yellow. The next few laps brought great side-by-side racing and plenty of passing throughout the field. Kaeding began to move towards the front after starting in the fifth spot. On lap eleven he passed DeCaires for third. While the close racing was happening, Becker looped it in turn four but kept going only to spin out in turn one. The second spin was enough to bring out the yellow.

Two laps later, Johnny gray came to a stop and brought out another yellow. Under the yellow, Jonathan Allard exited to the pit area with motor problems. Allard’s car had smoke coming out of the side of the motor during the previous few laps and ultimately something in the motor is what sidelined him from continuing on. However, up front older brother Stephen was making the Allard family proud and continued to lead the race.

The race resumed with Allard pulling away from the rest of the field. In sprint car racing it’s the slower car’s that help bring the excitement level up a few notches. Allard was closing in on slower traffic on lap 19. This is when the lead started to shrink. On lap 20 Kaeding passed Weisz for the second spot. Kaeding continued to close on Allard as the two battled with slower traffic. On lap 23 Brett Miller stopped on the backstretch to bring out the yellow. The final two laps were about to unfold. Up to that moment, the transponders had Kaeding slightly faster than Allard. Yet, with a clear track ahead of him Stephen pulled away and comfortably won the race. Kaeding crossed the line in second. Weisz finished a solid third. DeCaires crossed the line in fourth; notching him and the team their second top five in as many weeks at the speedway. Trevor Green finally earned a top five. Green has battled gremlins all season since racing at Chico but tonight he looked as good as he had all year. It was nice to see the Australia native do well.

Andy Gregg dominated the 12-lap B main event. Green ran second and Jason Botsford was third. Robert Stice and Jim Richardson rounded out the top five and transferred to the main event.

Jeremy Phillips led all eight laps to win the first heat race. Kaeding started fifth in heat race number two and on the last lap passed Brett Miller to get the win. Zack Mason won his third heat race in as many weeks at the speedway. Mason and crew continue to improve as the team is starting to gel.

Jonathan Allard starting things off by turning the fastest lap in qualifying at an 11.777. He was the only driver to reach into the 11-second bracket.

We are racing on July 4th, Wednesday night, with another point’s race and fire works to celebrate America’s Independence.

It was a long time coming for Santa Rosa driver Sparky Howard, but nobody realized just how long it did this veteran driver to get his first win. After spending most of his life racing winged sprint cars at Chico, the past two seasons Howard has taken off the wing and raced in the popular wingless spec sprint car division. Tonight, Howard led all 20 laps to win his first career main event at Silver Dollar Speedway. It took him 23 years of racing to finally accomplish this life long dream of standing in victory lane. “It took me 23-years of racing to finally get my first win tonight at Chico,” said Howard. “I’ve had a few quick times and heat wins but never won. I just hope it’s not another 23 years until I can do it again in fact, next week sounds good to me.” The wingless division should be applauded tonight. All 20 laps went non-stop. A total of 25 drivers turned out for the nights racing action.

Howard led from the start. Fellow front row starter Jake Serven fell into the fourth spot while Reyna Krueger and Brandon Davis raced into second and third. Howard pulled out to a decent lead that was short lived once he caught up to the rear of the field. With the race going non-stop Howard and others never had a clear track ahead of them. This is where Davis caught Howard and soon the top two were nose to tail on the speedway. Davis at times moved to the inside of Howard but could never pull along side and make the pass. With just a few laps to go Howard passed a slower car that Davis was unable to pass. This left Howard with enough cushion to lead the final few laps with ease. While Howard went on for the win, Cody Myers passed Davis at the stripe. Myers finished a career best second. The hard charger of the night was Darrell Hanestad. He originally was going to start in the sixth row but had to be push started, thus, he was penalized and sent to the rear. He passed sixteen cars on his way to a fourth place finish. Don Emery drove a solid race to finish in the fifth spot.

Lucas Nerlove put on quite a show for the fans in heat one. He held off Cody Myers and Reyna Krueger to get the exciting win. Hanestad cruised to an easy win in heat two. One of the storylines involved third place point driver Matt Streeter. Streeter was unable to finish the race and didn’t report for the B main event. He came into the night third in points; just five behind Brandon Davis but after tonight will fall back. Jimmy Pettit won the third heat race with a commanding lead at the finish line.

Taylor Simas won the shortened B main event. The race was scheduled for eight laps but checkered after the top two cars crashed. Only six cars started the race and transferred five. Tom Arbogast finished in the second spot.

You just had to be there. There is no other way to describe what happened on the last lap, last turn of the dirt-modified feature Friday night at Chico. Mark Abouzeid had led the first 19 and a half lap’s when the drama and excitement happened. Going into turn three Abouzeid went to the bottom of the racetrack while arch nemesis Richard Papenhausen went to the top. By doing so the two avoiding a lapped car that had spun in turn four. Each driver had to avoid the wreck and then race down the front straight for the win. As the two came out of turn four they drifted into each other. Neither driver lifted and as the two came together the forces of nature began to spin their cars, locking them together. As the two started spinning Papenhausen, by virtue of being on the outside spun towards the infield. Abouzeid on the bottom also spun towards the infield. By doing so, Papenhausen became the leader of the race and won as he slid sideways across the finish line. Abouzeid was locked to his inside and crossed in second, also sideways. It was, perhaps, the greatest dirt modified finish in the history of the sport. Mike Sohnrey finished in the third spot. Jeff Chew crossed the line in fourth. Darin Ruley rounded out the top five.

Mike Sohnrey was a race casualty on lap eleven when he banged wheels with leader Abouzeid. Debris was thrown from both cars and the caution was waived. Sohnrey exited to the pit area and relinquished the second spot. However, Sohnrey returned from the pits as a man on a mission. Sohnrey moved back through the field and finished third. Not a bad night of work for the farmer from Durham.

Car 177, driver Steve Boucher should get credit for his run from 17th starting spot and into the sixth finishing position.

The biggest car count of the season produced 20 dirt modifieds.

Abouzeid, Chris Compton and Papenhausen were all victorious in heat race action.

The dirt modifieds return to racing action on July 4th.

It turned out to be a family affair Friday night during the pure stock races. Jerry Bartlett won the 15-lap pure stock main event edging out Craig Eubanks and his daughter Heather. Jerry made his rare appearance special. “This is Heather’s track and I don’t want to interfere with what we are going for this season,” said Jerry in victory lane. “It’s just fun to get to race with her.” Eubanks started in the 10th spot and finished a respectable second. Only two accidents slowed the event. The first took place on lap six when three cars spun in turn three. The drivers involved were Jess Garland, Wes Dinsmore and Mike Slightom. Two laps later Joe Longmire and Dinsmore ran into each other for the next caution. Up front Bartlett never lost the lead. He beat fellow front row starter Jay Galvin into turn one and never looked back. Point leader Jeff Olschowka had a flat tire on lap six. Under the yellow he went to the pits, replaced the tire and continued on. He finished in the fifth spot. Fourth place went to Paul Stephens.

Olschowka led all eight laps to win the first heat. Heather got the best of dad in heat race two for the popular win.

Pure stocks take July 4th off and return back to the speedway on July 6th.

Marysville Raceway Park - Press Release 7.1.07
For immediate release

By Bob Burbach
Duppman last to 1st with last lap pass
Shelby, Olschowka and McColloch also win on Kids Night

Marysville CA- A spectacular Winged Pacific Sprint Car feature topped the program at Paul and Kathy Hawes' Marysville Raceway Park Saturday night. The large Kid's Night crowd witnessed Elk Grove's Geoff Duppman's phenomenal charge from eighteenth position to take the laurels in the Winged Pacific Sprint Car headliner. Lisa Shelby held off teammate Blane Baker for the KKCY Country 103 Cup Mini Stock trophy and Jeff Olschowka of Yuba City walked away from the competition in the KKCY Country 103 Cup Stock Car Series. Nick McColloch won the traveling SORA Sprint 100 feature.

Merritt Brothers Racing sponsored this 3rd edition of Kids Night giving away some 300 prizes donated by a multitude of local businesses and friends of racing here locally. The donations included bicycles, DVD players, t-shirts and a host of other great and valuable prizes. A fair-like atmosphere with clowns and balloons greeted the large crowd. A tip of the hat from this observer to the Merritt Brothers Racing Team and in particular, Jennifer Merritt. Jennifer has recently undergone some serious surgery, put aside her own recovery period and soldiered on to prompt, pick up and deliver the many prizes given away at this festive event. Simply organizing an event of this kind took hours and Jen was always on the phone and making things happen. Cheers, to a great effort.

The KKCY Stock Cars were first up for their feature event and Olschowka powered into the lead from his second row starting position as the field roared through the first two circuits. Pole sitter Heather Bartlett had a dismal first lap and fell to fifth with a big push in turn four on the initial lap. Dad, Jerry Bartlett, and Ray Benkowski, both from Yuba City, once again settled into a ferocious battle for second with Benkowski getting past Bartlett and then Bartlett returning the favor.

The race ended prematurely for the swift Benkowski as rookie driver Carl Harter lost control in his first ever ride coming out of turn four. Harter recovered and drove through the infield as he approached the starting line. He then pulled quickly onto the speedway right into the path of the fast approaching leaders. Harter hit Benkowski a ton. The impact sent Benkowski high in the air and over the banking in turn one. The video showed Benkowski motionless at the wheel as battered 25 came to rest. The red flag was thrown as track rescue crews bolted toward the wrecked racer. Benkowski was quickly removed and soon walked away from the harrowing ride. Olschowka led the rest of the way with ease as the race featured long green flag segments. 2006 champion and last week's feature event winner Phillip Shelby cruised to an easy third place in front of Billy Knoop and Heather Bartlett.

Front row starter Lisa Shelby led wire to wire in the KKCY Country 103 Cup Mini Stock Feature. But it was a much better race than that headline would indicate. She was pressured relentlessly by teammate Blane Baker in a race long duel. Baker actually nosed into the lead on the back chute at about ½ way, but Shelby was back in front as the pair crossed the start/finish line. Just behind them Marysville's James Foster and 2006 KKCY Mini Stock Champion Joel Giusti had a slugfest going on that had ramifications that would affect the point standings. Giusti came into the main event with a 3 point lead on Foster as Giusti beat Foster to the line in a heat race that both drivers competed in earlier. Foster just beat Giusti to the finish line for third in the feature and when the event becomes official on Tuesday Giusti will have but a single point lead on Foster for the championship. Mike Merritt passed his way into a great fifth place finish.

The Winged Pacific Sprint Car race simply had it all. For much of the race the crowd was on their feet or silenced with apprehension as thrilling duels and a wicked first lap crash were ingredients of event.
At the green front row starters Brandon Dozier and Sparks Nevada's Mike Monahan took the field into turn one with Monahan gaining the initial advantage. Marysville's Dozier tried to answer on the back chute, but he lost it. Dozier's car careened out of control in the middle of the back chute as the entire 20-car field darted to miss the sliding 95. Mike Wasina Sr. was sideways as he tried to avoid the mishap and was hammered by Sacramento's Tom Baker at full tilt. The racket from that impact hushed the crowd as Wasina flipped. An instant later, Wheatland's Tim Barnes made a dive for the inside as Wasina flipped toward the outside, but Barnes caught a wheel and flipped as well. He landed close to the entrance of turn three. Duppman was caught in the chaos and slid to a stop on the outside of the entry to three after bouncing around in the middle of the grinding crash. Duppman's car remained upright and apparently undamaged. Duppman and, amazingly, Brandon Dozier were able to restart in 18th & 19th positions respectively. All of the drivers in the mishap were OK.

The new front row for the restart would be loaded with championship talent. The pole sitter would be 3-time champion Korey Lovell, with 2004 champion Monahan resuming his outside pole status. At the new green, Lovell jumped into the lead with Monahan securing second. Cort Dozier made a quick move into third shadowed by 2-time champion Mike Wasina Jr. of Elverta. A series of quick yellow flag periods kept the field bunched. The track was changing quickly and it was a great race that required skill and daring to move forward.

As ½ way approached Wasina Jr. started to move. He quickly eclipsed Monahan for third who had just been passed by Cort Dozier on the previous circuit. Duppman, however, had used the first ½ of the race to pass cars from his eighteenth starting position on the restart. He passed 11 cars in 9 laps in an astounding display of quick, smooth driving. He was sixth two laps later as the leaders hit lapped traffic. Wasina dove under Dozier with an extraordinary inside move in turn one. It was either going to be a brilliant pass or an outrageous crash. It turned out to be a great pass but Dozier lost the handle and spun a great, wide loop and continued on, only to be slowed by a flat tire moments later. That yellow freed the leaders from lapped traffic with Lovell leading Wasina Jr., Monahan, point leader Jeremy Burt, and Duppman.

At the new green Duppman made quick work of Burt. Coming to Robin Davies white flag, Wasina encountered mechanical problems in turn four and slowed abruptly. Monahan was unable to avoid the white #7w and climbed over Wasina's left side wheels. Wasina rolled to a halt on the front chute well into the infield. The green stayed on. Monahan saved the blue 49 as it balanced precariously on it's left side tires for a moment. Monahan had skillfully averted disaster and brought his car down on all four. Lap 19 was scored as Monahan motored back onto the speedway in fifth as the white flag was displayed. As Lovell approached the checkered flag off of four, rookie Rod Ramirez spun on the entrance to one. The yellow was displayed at once negating lap 20. A one-lap dash to the checkers was going to decide this one, but leader Lovell was nursing a wounded mount. Lovell's right front tire was flat. Duppman had benefited from the Monahan/Wasina problem and was second.

The one lap dash was on. Lovell faltered coming out of two having obvious handling problems. Duppman dove low and the two cars rubbed on the back chute. Duppman threw his 96 into turn three with a slim lead in front of the screaming crowd; it stuck and he cruised through turn four for the victory. It was a thriller. Duppman's victory was particularly sweet given his dramatic charge to the front. Lovell muscled his wounded mount to second. A scramble in four on the last lap found Shawn Amos finishing third.

The Sprint 100s closed out the evening with a new star rising. Front row starter P.J. Petersen just took off and hid from the rest of the field in an impressive display of driving from the rookie contender. Tim McLaughlin, Tony Gaioran and teammate Nick McColloch couldn't make a dent in Petersen's lead. A series of yellow flag incidents and the resultant slowdowns didn't faze the poised Petersen.

Then, with but a handful of laps remaining, Petersen lost the handle in four and took McLaughlin with him in a slide that almost had the quick rookie on his lid. McColloch motored on to a fine victory and saluted Petersen's great drive in victory lane.

The California Sprint Car Civil War comes to town next week with 35-40 fire breathing, alcohol burning winged rockets doing battle for victory. The finest Winged Sprint Car show in California will make it's second of three stops to the Marysville ¼ mile. This event is the final Winged Sprint Car event of the long 4th of July week of racing that started Saturday night with the 3rd Annual Kids Night Sponsored by Merritt Bros. Racing.

Three time Civil War Series champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn is once again at the top of the Civil War driver standings. Colby Wiesz, of Colfax has climbed up to second in the point standings. The three time Marysville Raceway Park track champion, Wiesz, is 17-points behind the leader and is sure to be a contender at the track he calls home. Last time out at the Civil War race at Marysville Raceway Park; World of Outlaws star Brandon Wimmer of Fairmount Indiana took the checkers. Three drivers took flight and flipped during that event, including 2007 track point leader in the MRP Winged Sprint Car series, Grass Valley's Jeremy Burt. The action will be hard hitting and heavy for this second 2007 appearance of the Civil War at MRP. The final show for the Civil War at MRP is scheduled for Saturday night September 22nd. The stakes are high, as the series will pay over $30,000 in prize money to the competitors.

Many local drivers are also expected to compete on their home track. Completing the list of track regulars that are expected will be Burt, the team of Cort and Brandon Dozier, Jim Marsh, Tom Baker, Lee Armstrong, David Derr Jr., former track champion Mike Monahan of Sparks Nevada and recent feature winner Shawn Amos. 2-time track champion Mark Hall of Grass Valley is expected to be in the show as well. Kids Night winner Geoff Duppman is also expected to make the tow.

Press Release

Santa Maria, CA - June 30, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks brought plenty of excitement to race fans at Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.

*Davey Pombo, of Kerman, left nothing to doubt as he swept the board in the Bandit Sprint Car division setting fast time (14.028 seconds), winning an 8-lap heat race and the 30-lap "A" main event. It took Pombo eight laps to catch and pass early leader Dwayne Marcum of Fresno. From there it became a three car race between Pombo, point leader Jesse Mack, of Visalia, and Davey's cousin Albert Pombo of Easton. Albert held onto third place until seven laps from the end when John Niggli, of Tulare, slipped by. At the checkers it was Davey Pombo in front, Mack second, Niggli third, Albert Pombo fourth and Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, fifth to move to second in points. Other heat race winners were: Joey Layman, of Atascadero; Mike Knopf, of Santa Maria; and, Marcum. The 10-lap "B" main event went to Zak Hawthorne of Los Angeles.

*The 25-lap IMCA Modified feature event had so many yellow flags, for various reasons, that the event was shortened to twenty laps. When the smoke cleared, Rich Denman, of Coalinga, was in front for his first victory of the season with Santa Maria's Danny Lauer second and Arroyo Grande's Chad Weber third. Santa Maria's Josh Vogt and Joey Claborn were fourth and fifth. Claborn captured an 8-lap heat race as did Kenny Kirkpatrick of Nipomo.

*Factory Stocks showed up with one less car than the sprinters, twenty-six. They too needed a "B" main to set the field for the 20-lap "A" main event. Doyle Graham, Jr., of Grover Beach, chased Nipomo's Chris Crompe for seventeen circuits before taking over the lead. Santa Maria's Dave Thompson fought Graham hard for the remaining laps but had to settle for second. Third went to Santa Maria's Michael Frazier, fourth to Crompe and fifth to Arroyo Grande's Kevin Linson. Linson's top-five came by virtue of a victory in the 10-lap "B" main. Thompson, Tim Bennett, of Santa Maria and Ray Pezzi, of Terra Bella, captured the 8-lap heat races.

*After running well all season, but not long enough to finish most of the 20-lap feature events, Justin Marsh, of Nipomo, finally put it all together to win his first career Mini Stock main event. Marsh took the lead from Arroyo Grande's Justin Crockett on lap five of the 20-lap event, and then had to fight off point leader, and four-time winner, Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, to notch the victory. Crockett got by Kehs on the final circuit to place second, with Kehs third, Matt Sweeney, of Van Nuys, fourth and Mike Weigel, of Lompoc, fifth. Marsh and Kehs won 8-lap heat races.

*Next Saturday night Santa Maria Speedway presents Late Model Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks. The Ira's Bike Shop of Arroyo Grande bicycle races for kids will also be on the schedule. Admission prices will be $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. SMS is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road. ******
