the Minnesota Mafia is invading Elko Speedway in conjunction with the UMSS for the Fall Dirt Nationals. We will be adding bonus money to both nights as follows: $100 MN Mafia Hardcharger Award, $100 MN Mafia Hard Luck Award, and $100 MN Mafia Highest Finisher Award if the car has a MN Mafia decal on it. The decals are free and will be distributed in the pits ahead of time to all those drivers who want to place a decal on their car

This needs to be postponed till next weekend. The weather looks very cold both nights and wet on sat. The looks much more favorable for a successful show. This is a very fun race and even more fun when the weather is good and there are people in the stands. Would hate to see it go away because weather sucked and people didnt show up again.. Jus my 2 cents

I agree with Kent,,, low to mid 60's the following weekend. I enjoy it because it's kind of an end of the year gathering of the sprint car clans. You will have UMSS, Jackson, IMCA plus a few suprise visitors for this show..

Wheren't they talking about having some type of open run whatcha brung type show the following weekend anyway??

I hear what you guys are saying, This decision is on the UMSS and Tom Ryan, we are just following along on this one and will support their decision one way or the other. Kent, were you guys planning on running this weekend?

Hope to see the "Butterfield Badass" on the track this weekend

I totally agree with you kpwinters.

It's a crapshoot when you have a race this late in the season. It could be in the 60's/70's for temps or it could be in the deep freeze with the north wind blowing in your face.

Plus I see that there's a winter storm watch for Northern North Dakota & Minnesota for Thursday. So obviously the weather is changing in the upper midwest.

No way. There's nothing fun about running around the infield all night in the cold. I used to be an avid ice fisherman and sat on a bucket fishing crappies every weekend but that was 30 years ago before I had the car accident and neck surgery. It's not much fun laying on a heating pad the next day on account of being out in the cold and wind. I have a hunch they'll probably cancel because they're going to get beat up pretty bad at the gate if they go ahead and race. They can't pay the bills on the back gate and the 50 hard core fans that will show up wearing snowmobile suits. Racing is a summer time deal for me. wink

Just talked with Joe, still planning to run both nights, I am hoping that they draw a decent crowd as this has always been a great show. Either way the "Mafia" will be there so stop at our booth or come down to the 93 pit after the races and see us.

Forecast for Friday, high of 47 with a west/northwest wind 18 to 25 mph with gusts as high as 33 mph and a low of 33. Saturday not quite as windy but still blowing into the stands from the northwest (grandstand faces north) with a high of 45 and low of 27. I think it's going to be pretty tough on the crowd because in addition to the cold it has been so dry lately. Dust was a factor at the 100 last month, never seen it so bad in my photos during the Features. They'd mist the track, go green and I'd get a few shots then it would get so dusty the rest of my shots were full of dust orbs from the flash bouncing off the dust clouds. I eventually resigned myself to two or three shots at the start of each race and a couple victory lane shots. I wasn't going to attend this Elko deal before the weather turned cold on account of the racing budget was already spent (don't escrow for T&I and it all just came due) but I was regretting having to miss Elko. That is, until I saw the forecast. Fact is the highlights are being posted the next morning on Meeks video so between that and the race reports I have been able to keep up pretty well when I have to miss races. The decision was made tonight to keep the website running through 2013 but I will probably be hit or miss for races next season so I'll be taking advantage of the internet recaps and videos a lot. Speaking of dust and cameras my five year old camera body is on it's last legs. Retirement is a few years off and we're trying to pay bills down so chasing races and buying new cameras was one of the first items on the chopping block. LOL

Despite cold and windy conditions, a very strong field of 31 UMSS sprint cars were on hand for the opening night of the Elko Fall Dirt Nationals on Friday October 5. The car count set a record turnout for UMSS and Elko Speedway. Brooke Tatnell waited until the final lap to make the winning pass in turns 1-2 on Plymouth, WI driver Ben Schmidt. Schmidt, a track champion in eastern WI and MSA driver for several seasons was impressive in his first-ever start with the UMSS. Schmidt was the high point driver following the heat races and redrew the zero (0) pill for a straight-up feature start. Wade Nygaard of Grand Forks, ND led the opening two laps before Schmiidt motored underneath him. The feature race had several good battles and ended up being a very entertaining main event. The pace was only slowed twice under caution, but the final caution set up a two lap dash to the checkers. Tatnell made the middle lane work on the final circuit to take an exciting win, his second of the season at Elko having won back in April.

The final night of the Fall Dirt Nationals will take place on Saturday October 6. Defending and now 2012 Champion Jerry Richert, Jr. will be on hand, as Sonny had a family commitment that prevented him from racing on Friday night. Defending Saturday night Fall Nationals Champion Scott Winters is also expected to be on hand Saturday to try and defend his title and earn the top prize of $2,000. Another strong field should be on hand to heat things up on the dirt at Elko.
