I've been wondering for years why NHRA Funny Car driver/owner Jim Head has not been able to find the driver he's been looking for. He annually complains about not having found a driver yet and does the driving himself. Hey, Jim, I'm waiting for that call---will drive for free. I did some googling and discovered it ain't just any driver he's looking for, he's looking for someone who has their Funny Car license (an expensive & time consuming procedure to get one), unless already a pro, you pretty much have to go thru Roy Hill's drag racing school at the highest (read most expensive level), then to satisfy NHRA you have to make several runs at a strip that you've rented for the day, these runs starting from 100 foot runs then shutoff, then a 300 foot run, several of each might be needed, then on and on the day goes and if you have the ???, you might eventually get your license.
Most important to Jim Head is that you must bring along hundreds of thousands of dollars of your own money for each year or hundreds of thousands of dollars in sponsorship money for each year. Buy a ride is very big in NHRA's top categories, unless you are motorcycle driver Antron Brown. The NHRA decided years ago that they needed an African American driver in their top class (top fuel dragster) in an attempt to draw African American fans. The fact that they won't watch unless one of """their own"""" is racing, sounds racist to me too, (those potential fans, not me) is even more upsetting than "buy a ride". Anywho, Don Schumacher was pressured by the NHRA and offered benefits to make this happen being he owns a half dozen of the cars in the top two classes. PS this is not to be discussed and don't ask Don any questions about it. Hey, sometimes the truth looks bad. Some of this info came from a driver who previously drove a top fuel dragster but is on the outside looking in. Jealousy, maybe, but doubt it. Bottom line on Antron, an excellent reaction time driver, is the fan base has not yet shown up.

The NHRA has that system for licensing in place so half wit talentless hacks cant just jump in a top fuel car and kill themselves or another competitor or even fans. There is no conspiracy to be had with their license procedure.
Cheers!

Sounds like something either Whit Bazemore or Larry Dixon would say... both a couple of whiners. They may have talent, but there is a reason they don't have a ride.

Anything that goes 0-100 in under a second, and 0-300+ in 1000 feet has got my undivided attention.

Well said. It's one of those things that has to be experienced to appreciate. Once you see it, hear it, smell it, feel it, any gearhead will be addicted to 10,000 horsepower nitro rockets.

Normal Saturday night bracket racing is the worst. I can't stand that stuff. However, NHRA Nitro drags are amazing. I became interested in John/Ashley/Courtney after thier reality show, and went to watch my first Nitro show. I can still remember feeling the rumble in my chest because of all of the power of the Nitro cars. If you have never been, you have to go. It is amazing. I recommend going to a night qualifier race. Seeing those cars under the lights is great.
Jim Head is an innovator. Jim Head is an engineer. Jim Head is a wealthy man who funds his own race team. Jim Head is one of my favorite underdogs to cheer for. I have heard him state before that he is looking for a replacement driver. However, I think his high bar of qualifications is more of a means to keep himself in the car. I think that he still loves to drive the cars.
Finally, other than John Force paying for his daughters, I would like for you to name one owner that has paid for a driver to get his national liscense.
