$10,000 to win Stock Car Nationals highlight final month of racing at Oklahoma Sports Park
By John Rittenoure
Ada, Okla. (Sept 19, 2012) - While many race tracks are winding down for the season Oklahoma Sports Park is gearing up for a big finish.
Close to $50,000 will be on the line over three weekends starting with the 18th annual Oklahoma Dirt Track Championships Sept. 21-22. The 3rd annual Stock Car Nationals follows Sept. 26-29 and the season concludes with the Oklahoma Sport Mod Nationals Oct. 17-20. Throw in the Oct. 6 Day of Destruction Enduro on Oct. 6 and you have a busy month of racing for Southern Oklahoma race fans.
The Dirt Track Championships will feature modifieds, sport mods, factory stocks and pure stocks all racing for added prize money. The modified feature will pay $2,000 to win.
But the showcase event of the three shows is the annual Stock Car Nationals.
“It is $10,000 to win, $500 to start,” said Oklahoma Sports Park promoter George Welch. “We had 64 (entries) the first year, 54 the second year and we are hoping for a few more cars this year.”
Two days of qualifying fill the finals field which was won by Brill Motor Speedway promoter Mark Brill last year.
“Mark Brill won it last year and Kip Hughes won it the first year,” recalled Welch.
“We qualify on Thursday Friday and run the race on Saturday. We qualify five cars to the inside row on Thursday and outside row on Friday night. Everybody else will run last chance qualifiers on Saturday for the last ten spots.”
Various classes of cars are legal for the Stock Car Nationals.
“It is ProStreet, IMCA, I-Stock, factory stocks, street stocks are all legal. Everything up to your limited late models,” Welch said.
And to win the $10,000 both the driver and car need to be prepared.
“Normally it is 50 laps this year we will probably bump it to 60 laps,” explained Welch. “They had better be in shape.”
The Sport Mod Nationals is new this season and will end the Oklahoma Sports Park season.
“The Sport Mod Nationals is the second weekend in October and it is $5,000 to win and $500 to start,” said Welch. “It will be the same format as the stock car national. It will probably be 50 laps. The rules are the same as we have been running here and at Meeker.”
