Johnson One Step Closer to Title, Claims NCRA Sport Mod Feature in Enid!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Enid, Oklahoma – September 9, 2012 - Rebounding from a disappointing finish the previous night at 81 Speedway, current series point leader Travis Johnson took the lead early and never looked back in claiming the Bob Howard PDC and Mopar National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products southern sport modified feature Sunday night, atop the Garfield County Fairgrounds and Enid Speedway in Enid, Oklahoma.
Cleo Adams and Ross McCartney started on the front row for the twenty-five lap feature with third starting Johnson taking the lead on lap two. Johnson would open up a half stretch lead before entering lapped traffic on lap six.
Johnson, aboard his #86j Carol's Racing Engines powered Big Chief Racing Chassis, looked to be on cruise control before Todd Decker spun on lap eleven to bring out the caution. The restart would only go a couple more laps before Decker, the tours previous night feature winner and who came into the night just ten points out of the point lead, spun in turn four to bring out his second caution of the feature, which sent him to the pits with a disappointing 19th place finish.
There was no stopping Johnson once racing action resumed and the tours career feature winner added his fifth victory of the 2012 race season to his belt and one race closer to his first career series championship.
Cleo Adams finished second while eighth starting Joe Adams came home third. McCartney settled for fourth while Landon Maddox rounded out the top five.
The three heat races for the twenty-seven car field were won by Johnson, Bobby McGehee and Maddox. Jeff Kaup won the race shortened "B" feature which ended early under red when Danny Long barrel-rolled off the front stretch causing his motor to catch fire. He was uninjured.
The fourth season for the Bob Howard PDC and Mopar NCRA southern sport modified season will come to an end this coming Saturday night as they make their second appearance of the season at the Salina High Banks Speedway in Salina, Oklahoma.
The series would like to take this time to thank their southern sport modified division partners and sponsors for the 2012 race season:
