El Dorado County New Car Dealer’s Championship Series returns to Placerville Saturday

New clay added to track surface; Rough driving to be addressed in stock divisions

By Bill Sullivan

PLACERVILLE,CA – This Saturday night the 2007 El Dorado County New Car Dealer Association, Hoosier Racing Tires, Coors Light championship racing season continues at Placerville Speedway with the seventh event of the racing season. Pacific Sprints, Pro Stocks and Pure Stocks will resume their championship campaigns. The three regulars will be joined by the Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Cars for the second time this season.

Saturday night will mark the first time the multi division will compete on the El Dorado County Fairground in three weeks following the county fair break and a special event last Saturday night. As the second half of the season begins, competitors will surely enjoy an improved track surface as several tons of new material was added immediately following last Saturday’s Civil War event.

More than 20 truck loads of fresh clay was delivered early in the week to Placerville Speedway. The new material will replace the race worn track surface, improving traction and increasing the banking of the quarter-mile oval to its original level. Additionally the new material will retain moisture and assist with dust control in the hot summer months to come.

Heading into Saturday’ event, Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove leads the point standings in the winged sprint car division. DeCaires and car owner John Taylor set their sights on the Civil War campaign in 2007 and originally planned to race a limited schedule in the weekly series. However, following five top five finishes and a recent feature victory the team now sits in the point lead in defense of their 2006 track championship.

Placerville’s Jimmy Trulli, who won the Civil War event last weekend, is just 10-points behind DeCaires and sits tied for the bridesmaid position with previous point leader C.J. Humphreys of Placerville. Local favorite Scott Russell of Placerville is in the fourth position, 29-points from the lead. James Sweeney of Placerville rounds out the top five, 34-points from the lead.

In the Pro Stock division Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City continues to lead the point standings. Brown has won five feature events this season and sits ahead of former two time track champion Mike Moran of Rancho Cordova. Marek Bernert of Fair Oaks ranks third, 2-points behind Moran. Dennis Ahart of Cameron Park is fourth in the standings, 39-points from the lead while veteran Dennis Armstrong of Eldorado rounds out the top five.

Entering the second half of the season, John Padjen Motorsports hopes to see a consistent improvement in the overall car count in the Pro Stock division. Overall this season 18 different drivers have competed here. However only seven of those drivers has entered all six events so far in the year and ten drivers overall have entered at least five events. While the division produces on the edge of your seat door to door action each week, consistent car counts are required to warrant the future of the class in years to come. One driver that is expected to return following extensive returns will be defending division champion Jon Tilford of Folsom. Tilford will be back behind the wheel of his #97 until the fourth of July when his older brother Tom Tilford, the 2006 Pure Stock champion, is expected to take the wheel for the remainder of the year.

Following several weeks of ongoing mishaps the Pure Stock division will likely be given stern warning this Saturday night during the pre-race driver’s meeting in regards to aggressive and rough driving and the penalties that could follow such as suspensions and disqualifications if such actions continue. Look for point leader Matt Tilford of Folsom to maintain his point lead in this division that looked much like a destruction derby during the sixth point race.

Tilford currently leads the division by seven points over fellow two-time winner Jason Englund of Citrus Heights. Brian Stevens of Pollock Pines is third, 20-points out of the lead. Mike McClure of Nevada City is in fourth followed by Joe Olshowka of Marysville

As the Hunt Magneto Wingless Sprints make their second season appearance here Saturday the John Padjen Motorsports series that shares points from both Placerville and Silver Dollar Speedway has Brandon Davis of Rohnert Park in the point lead over Jay Youngman. Matt Streeter is third in the point standings. Former Placerville champion Billy Wallace is fourth overall while Cody Myers rounds out the top five.

Placerville Speedway will open at 5:00 on Saturday with warm ups starting at 5:30 followed by Zam Fencing/Direct Traffic Control sponsored qualifying at 6:30 and heat races to follow.
