CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINTS AT SANTA MARIA THIS SATURDAY!

(Placentia, CA, August 8, 2012) After a week off, the California Lightning Sprint Cars will journey up the Central California Coast for their only 2012 appearance at Chris Kearns Santa Maria Speedway this Saturday night, August 11th. Joining the CLS on the program will be the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, Toste Construction Mini Stocks and the Mod
Lites. Spectator gates will open at 4:30 PM and the first race will be at 6:00.

Heading into Saturday's race, which is round #9 of the year, Anaheim Hills veteran "Zoom" Guy Maresch holds an 82-point advantage over Corona's Steve Limon in the championship standings. Limon, who spent 4 1/2 years in Iraq while serving in the United States Army, scored his first ever CLS win at Perris Auto Speedway on July 28th and moved from fourth to second in the standings. Maresch, who came into the July 28th race with a 64-point lead in the standings, continued his season long consistent driving and came from the ninth starting spot to finish second to Limon.

Maresch, 55, is still looking for the first win of his CLS career. However, in a near identical story, Wildomar's Tim Brown was leading the standings due to his consistent driving one year ago. He had never won a main event. When the series got to Santa Maria last August, Brown finally scored his first win in and went on from there to claim the 2011 CLS championship.
Maresch is hoping for the same results this Saturday and when the season
ends in November.

Rounding out the top five behind Maresch and Limon in the standings heading into Saturday's race is Lomita veteran Bobby Michnowicz, Dale
Gamer of Anaheim and Placentia resident Dan Hillberg. Michnowicz, the 2004 CRA Sprint Car champion, is only 27-points behind Limon. Gamer, a former Speedway Motorcycle racer, is 11-points in back of Michnowicz and just 10 in front of Hillberg.

Michnowicz and his teenage son Kevin lead the series with two wins each in the first eight races of the campaign. Limon, Hillberg, Murrieta's Stuart Hielscher Jr. and Northern California Scott Kinney accounted for the other four wins.

After Saturday's race at Santa Maria, the CLS will be right back in action on August 18th at Perris Auto Speedway with the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars and The PAS Senior Sprints.

The California Lightning Sprint Car Series would like to thank 2012 series sponsors Christian Stover Foundation, Rod End Supply, Sander Engineering, Saldana Race Products, DK Machining and abrication, Keizer Aluminum Wheels, Hoosier Racing Tires, Circle Track Performance, DJ Safety, Performance by Rosson Racing, Racing Optics, Electro Tech Powder Coating and Oil Twins Amsoil (Hard Charger Award at The PAS).
