JONES EMOTIONAL AFTER CRA WIN AT THE PAS By Robert Mayson
Perris, Calif……Overcoming a heavy heart with an even heavier right foot, Lucas Oil USAC/CRA point leader Tony Jones of Norco, Calif., became the first repeat winner at the Perris Auto Speedway this season after he drove his Alexander Trucking / La Villa Restaurant #No. 4 DRC to a 30-lap victory.
“We were on a mission tonight,” Jones said while holding back tears in his eyes. “Grandma Jones passed away this morning and my wife’s mom Shirley recently passed away, so we had a couple of angles watching over us tonight. I just got off the phone with my dad (Bubby) and he was pretty proud that we could go out and win one for grandma.”
Jones, who also turned the fastest lap in time trials, started the main event in the eighth position and was able to pass two cars on the opening lap. Meanwhile, Rodney Argo, Long Beach, Calif., led the first lap after moving his Don Argo / Decore Plating No. 19 Stinger ahead of the front pair of Seth Wilson and Jimmy Crawford.
Like Argo, Blake Miller found the low-line to his liking and was quickly in contention for the lead after starting in the third row. With fourth-row starter Mike Spencer following him to the front, Miller squeezed under Argo exiting turn-two on the third circuit. By the end of the lap, Spencer had also passed Argo for second-place.
Miller appeared to be leading comfortably, but a bleeder valve problem on his right rear tire had been slowly brewing. Unfortunately for Spencer, he was unable to avoid Miller when the tire finally went flat on the tenth-lap. Spencer spun to a stop, while Miller headed to the work area for a new tire. Both drivers returned to action with Spencer eventually finishing eighth and Miller eleventh. Argo reassumed the lead for the restart with Jones sitting directly behind him. While Jones searched for a way around Argo, sixth-place Danny Sheridan’s night ended in flames on the 14th lap. Sheridan was able to safely stop his fiery mount even though the engine rod that shot through the side of the block also knocked out his left front suspension.
Jones continued to pressure to only Ford powered car in the field after the restart. Showing the savvy of a veteran, Jones tested a potential crossover pass exiting turn-two for two laps before finally making the move on the 22nd lap. Once out front, Jones uncharacteristically moved away front the cushion to the faster bottom groove to earn his third win of the season.
Argo did a heck of job tonight. Anytime you can run side-by-side with a guy, that’s some fun racing. He’s been good the last couple of months and it’s good to see him up front,” Jones later said, referencing Argo’s second-place run. “Argo never really got away from me, but he was fast on the bottom. I moved down (from the cushion) a couple of times and found a couple different lines that were just a little better. I watched the scoreboard a little and saw that Rip Williams (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was coming and I figured he was probably doing it on the bottom.”
Jones was right about Williams “doing it on the bottom.” After starting 15th, Williams powered his Sharon Jory / AMA Plastics No. 3 Stinger to a third-place finish. Williams was also named the “Hard-Charger” of the race.
Defending series champion Cory Kruseman, Ventura, Calif. finished fourth in his Agromin Soil No. 21k Bullet after starting ninth. Despite starting the feature with a car running on only seven cylinders, Rickie Gaunt of Torrance, Cailf., was still able to drive his Nadine Gardner / Gardner Pipe & Mechanical No. 94 Chalk to a fifth-place finish. Interestingly, the first five finishers were all former Oval Nationals winners.

MURPHY LEARNS LESSON, WINS SCRA FEATURE By Dan Fleisher
JUNE 23, 2007 --- There’s an old adage that says, “you’re never too old to learn,” and that was the case for 39-year-old veteran Peter Murphy as he learned a good lesson from 21-year-old Jonathan Logan and passed Davey Pombo to win the SCRA 360 wingless 30-lap feature at Kings Speedway (CA). The lesson, take the high groove in turns three and four.
Murphy was destined to finish second to Pombo as the entire field of 22 cars carefully tip-toed in the low groove around the mostly dry, slick track. Everyone that is, except Logan, who started a distant 18th and found some moisture in the high groove. He used it to his advantage and steamrolled through the field, moving to seventh by lap 10, sixth on lap 13, fourth on lap 16, and then flew around Murphy on the outside on lap 18 as they crossed the line. Murphy however, continued using the bottom in turns one and two, the best line at that end of the track, and regained the second spot.
Realizing that Logan’s line in three and four was the way to go, Murphy used it to his advantage and passed Pombo on lap 20 and then withstood the latter’s challenges for the final 10 laps to record his third victory of the season. Pombo held onto second over Logan, last year’s series champion, who enjoyed his best finish of the season.
Celebrating in victory circle, Murphy said if not for Logan, he would have settled for second. “I want to thank Jonathan for showing me the way around this place,” he gleefully said.
The start of the event was somewhat of a fiasco. After one false start, the field took the green from starter Lee Jaskowiak only to have pole-sitter Myles Bishop spin in front of the entire field as they negotiated turn two. Six cars were involved in the get-together, eliminating Bishop, Dave Knott, and Dwayne Marcum. On the complete restart, Pombo took control over Murphy, Rusty Carlile, Michael Faccinto and Steven Williams. The positions held until lap 10 when Richard VanderWeerd spun in turn one and collected Richard Harvey Jr., whose machine flipped, ending his evening. Three laps later, another yellow was unfurled when Adam Frith-Smith spun in the same turn. Williams, poised for his best finish of the year, pulled off with mechanical woes one lap later
Most of the fans were focusing on Logan’s bold moves and therefore they missed Brandon Thomson collect Faccinto, once again in turn one, ending the 16-year-old (Faccinto) from what probably would have been a second straight top-five finish. He was credited with 15th. It was the final yellow of the evening. Rounding out the top-ten were Carlile, Brett Lowder, Jeff Gardner, Albert Pombo, Brandon Thomson, Kevin Barnes and Matt Day. Lowder came from 16th, Gardner from 19th and Pombo from 20th, all fine drives. Several of the other top point contenders suffered during the evening. John Niggli (8th) finished a distant 14th, Alexander (5th) was credited with 19th, and Harvey (7th) was awarded 18th.
Heat race winners included Murphy, Williams, Bishop (after Albert Pombo was disqualified for being under weight) and Barnes. Teenager Bishop collected his first-ever Dash and answered “yes sir” to most of the questions posed by PA announcer Dave Munoz. Davey Pombo recorded his third quick qualifying time of the season over 25 other entrants, the largest of the year. Alexander captured the “B” main, the first one of the season.

Davis Charges to ASCS Canyon Win at Casa Grande Lonnie Wheatley, CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (June 23, 2007) – Charles Davis, Jr., has been knocking on the door all year long. He finally broke through that door to capture his first American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region feature win of the year in Saturday night's 30-lap feature at Central Arizona Raceway.
After posting five runner-up finishes in the opening eight events of the season, Davis took command when early pacesetter Bobby Taylor was forced pitside with rearend woes and led the rest of the way aboard the Don Ott-powered All State Utility Construction No. 32az F5-chassis.
Davis was chased to the checkered flag by Chris Bonneau, who posted his top finish of the year in ASCS Canyon Region competition. Seainn Hendricsen earned his first podium finish of the season by claiming the show position, with Shon Deskins and Bob Ream, Jr., rounding out the top five.
After winning the opening seven of eight ASCS Canyon Region events this year, Jeremy Sherman encountered engine problems in heat race action and was unable to make the call for feature action. The only event that Sherman hadn't won this season also occurred at Central Arizona Raceway.
Mike Martin also scratched for the balance of the card after heat race engine woes, while Josh Pelkey, who entered the event ranked second in points, scratched for the night after hot laps.

PRESS RELEASE, PLACERVILLE SPEEDWAY, PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA FROM THE OFFICE OF JOHN PADJEN MOTORPORTS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 2007 Placerville’s own Trulli wins first ever Civil War feature event at home Saturday 37 year old local favorite ends hometown victory dry spell with coveted victory By Bill Sullivan PLACERVILLE,CA – Two weeks ago when the Civil War series visited Calistoga Speedway it was veteran driver Mike Benson picking up his first hometown victory. This Saturday night the sudden streak of hometown heroes stealing the gold in the competitive series continued when Placerville’s own Jimmy Trulli won his first ever Civil War feature event during the sixth round of competition at Placerville Speedway. Trulli has over 20 years of experience racing sprint cars. His career includes many top finishes in his days with the former Northern Auto Racing Club. The 37-year-old local favorite has a number of victories on his resume including wins at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, the Timber Cup Invitational in Quincy, the Washington State Fair Championship Race and the 360 Nationals in Skagit, Washington. The last time the 1987 Placerville Speedway Rookie of the Year won on his hometown track was during a weekly point race several years ago. Saturday night’s victory is the first Civil War Series victory for the local driver that was embraced by an ecstatic capacity crowd Saturday night when he climbed from his popular #33T sprint car on the front stretch. “It’s been a long time since I have won at home, that’s for sure,” said Trulli. “So long I don’t actually remember when it was, four or five years ago at least. It seems like I only win races far away from home and it’s even been awhile since I did that. This is great to finally win in front of my fans and sponsors tonight.” Trulli started the 30-lap feature event in the third position, staged behind the front row of Benson and fellow local Andy Gregg of Placerville. At the waving of the green flag both Gregg and Trulli avoided a collision with Benson who slid sideways as he entered the first set of turns. Despite the loss of traction, Benson managed to gain control of his #77 sprint car as several drivers shuffled for position while Gregg and Trulli broke away from the field. With 12 laps in the book it appeared as if Gregg was the strongest car in the field. Gregg maintained a lead of several car lengths over Trulli on a very challenging track surface that was affected by both the afternoon wind and a short term of maintenance during the past week due to the El Dorado County Fair unilizing the arena until mid week. While Gregg and Trulli were racing on the very high line of the track, Placerville’s C..J. Humphreys became a factor in the third place until late in the race when a collision with Jackson’s Matt Petty sent him to the pit area for the night by means of the two-spin rule. It was on lap 15 that Trulli gained momentum entering the first turn of the track. Exiting the second turn Trulli nearly brought every spectator to the edge of their seats as he veered to the low side of Gregg and the two local favorites raced side by side down the backstretch to battle for the $2000 victory. Entering the next set of turns, Trulli completed the well executed pass to take the lead he would never relinquish. Once in front, Trulli raced on the high side of the track, a driving line he very rarely runs but chose to do so due to the challenging dry track conditions. ‘When you see me running on the top at this place, something is definitely different out here,” Trulli told the screaming fans during his post race interview. “I normally don’t run up there but tonight it was the only way to get around there. I knew everyone else was up there on the faster line so I had to change my habits a little bit.” In the latter laps of the event Colby Wiesz of Colfax had advanced from the ninth position into second place to chase Trulli around the quarter-mile holding off Gregg. Earlier the night Andy Forsberg of Auburn suffered a damaging crash in heat racing but recovered to race into the top five of the feature event. Forsberg was running fourth until lap 25 when Elk Grove’s Greg DeCaires took the position. One lap later DeCaires overtook Gregg for the third position before the checkered flag that waved to Trulli followed by Wiesz, DeCaires, Gregg, Forsberg and Richard Bailey of Napa. “This was a tough track tonight, I gave it everything had out there to try and catch him (Trulli),” said Wiesz. “He drove an great race tonight and I want to congratulate him I know its been a long time or them and he earned this one for sure.” The Civil War Sprint Cars were joined on Saturday by the midgets of the Bay Cities Racing Association. In this event, four time Western States Champion Robby Flock of Murieta joined the roster for the evening and went on to win the 30-lap feature event. Flock started ninth in the field an quickly worked his way to the front in his Mike Sala owned #19s. After chasing long time leader John Sarale of Stockton, Flock went to the low side of the backstretch o overtake the lead on the 26th lap. At the checkered flag Flock was followed by Sarale, Floyd Alvis of San Carlos and point leader Justin Grant of Ione. Racing continues next Saturday night at Placerville Speedway with the El Dorado County New Car Dealer’s Association Championship Series. Sprint Cars, Pro Stocks and Pure Stocks will return along with the Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Cars. The front gates will open at 5 p.m. For further information log on to www.johnpadjenmotorsports.com. For additional information on the BCRA program Saturday night visit www.bcraracing.com.

Kelly Denison takes Non-Wing Sprint Main at Hollywood Hills Speedway 6-23-2007 by Bob Ingram / Beth Hazlewood
San Felipe Pueblo, New Mexico. On a very warm night a great crowd was on hand to see some thrilling racing at Hollywood Hills Speedway. On the card tonight were the Non-Winged Sprints, Winged Mini-Sprints, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks. Somewhat surprisingly the track was tacky and racy from the git go, which was not an easy task with the temps being near 100 the last few day. HHS track prep master Paul Wilson has done an outstanding job all year getting the track ready for Saturdays shows. At the end of the Sprint Car main there was actually moisture coming up through the surface and Paul was out working the track before the crowd had left the track.
The Sprints had a very good field of 21 cars, down a couple due to a Winged show in Show Low Arizona and an injury to regular driver Ted McAdams who sustained a wrist injury at Aztec Speedway a couple of weeks ago. Heat #1 had 7 cars with the top 5 fighting for the win to the very end. This race had only 1 yellow flag as the hard charging #7 of Jason Tanner who was literally backing his car into the turns spun. At the checkered the #40X of Scott box took a very close win over the #29 of Ronnie Smith with #11W of Tim West coming home in the 3rd spot and the #78 of Jody Williams taking 4th. These 4 cars were within a half dozen car lengths of each other at the stripe. Heat #2 had only 6 cars as the car of Ronnie Smiths dad Randy was not able to make the call. These 6 cars ran side by side the entire race without a caution period. A new comer to this division was Mini-Sprint driver, 16 year old Cody Mansfield driving in his first Sprint car race. Cody did a great job and ran with the pack right to the end. The #X611 of long time racer Bo Baker took the win over the #9X of Kelly Denison with the #93 of Jon Taylor taking 3rd. Heat #3 saw another long time racer and Fighter Jet pilot Tom Ball (#16) take the win over Jessie Baker ( son of Bo ) with the #52 of Santa Fe’s David Burns taking the show position. All three heat races saw lots of 2 & 3 wide racing. The Main Event saw 20 of the 21 cars make the start as the #21 of Paul Whitehead was not able to make the call. Ex-World of Outlaws driver Johnny Herrera who had won all of the previous Main Events was not in the field tonight so there was going to be a first time winner for the year. There were several drivers up for the challenge, and challenge they did with some of the most exciting racing you could hope to see. The Main got off to a great start and ran several laps before the first of 3 yellow flags slowed the action. Kelly Denison jumped out to an early lead from his second row outside start and steadily pulled away from the field. There were several cars fighting for the 2nd spot not far behind Denison. In the end Denison was able to take his first win of the season over the #40X of Scott Box with the #29 of Ronnie Smith, #77 Colt Treharn and #11W of Tim West filling out the top 5 spots.
Thanks to all of the Drivers, Crews, Sponsors, Fans and Staff at Hollywood Hills Speedway for another great night of dirt track racing in New Mexico. Be sure and come out next Saturday when the Sprint Cars will again be on the program as well as the Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks and the Legends for the first of only two of their appearances at HHS this year.

Brent Kaeding Wins During a Rare Appearance at Chico on Friday Night By: Troy Hennig
(Chico, CA 6-22-07)…It’s been one of those years for Campbell, CA driver Brent Kaeding. This year Kaeding has won eight King of California events along with a handful of races at Watsonville. Tonight he continued his winning ways and scored a decisive victory during point race number 11 at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on Friday night. Along the way to his win Kaeding won $2,000 on Jessee Heating and Air Night. Kaeding thanked Johnny Gray and the whole Jessee Heating and Air Team in victory lane for sponsoring the night. It was an amazing turn out for the winged sprint cars considering the previous week most California teams were racing in Washington at the Dirt Cup. A total of 34 sprint cars timed in for the race. It was the second highest winged sprint car count of the year for a Friday night race.
Trevor Green started on the pole for the 25-lap main event and was the early leader. Stephen Allard fell into the second spot while Kaeding raced into the third spot. Zack Mason was the first driver to bring out the caution just as the first lap was completed. During the first lap the talk of the grandstands was Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove. At that point he had already passed five cars. It was an interesting night for DeCaires that probably needs a while other story by itself. Yet, to sum up, DeCaires was on the front row of the B main event. During the start of the race the officials determined that he had false started resulting in him being sent to the rear of the field, 14th spot. He raced his was up to fifth at the checkered and one spot out of the transfer. But Brett Miller, who, like DeCaires needs a book to describe his night, finished fourth and then scratched from the feature with reported motor troubles. We will have to read Gary Thomas’ reports from this team during his weekly knowledgeable press release for the Care Free Pools team. This allowed DeCaires the chance to start the main event and what a show he gave us. Throughout the race DeCaires was spectacular passing cars the way he did on a tough dusty racing surface. DeCaires started in the final spot, twentieth position, and ultimately finished in the third spot. DeCaires also bring a strong fan base with his NMI Construction #24. The grandstand had an electric vibe throughout the races watching DeCaires.
On lap seven Robbie Whitchurch spun in turn two. The ensuing restart Kaeding was working the top of the racetrack in turn one. He passed Stephen Allard going through the turns and set his sites on Green. On the next lap he used the same move to pass Green for the lead. Allard then found what Kaeding was using and on lap fifteen passed Green for second spot. Behind them Sean Becker was using the top and passing Andy Gregg for the fourth spot. However, once you made the pass you needed to dive back to the bottom in three and four to secure the spot. Becker tried this but cut his JEI chassis #35m a little too early and spun the car entering turn three. To avoid an accident Gregg and Jonathan Allard went high and lost spots to DeCaires, who was in the right place at the right time. On lap 22 the final caution waived when Jonathan Allard spun around in turn two. DeCaires passed Green on the next lap to secure his third place finish. Up front Kaeding had the field covered. It was a privilege to watch the 12-time King of California showcase his driving talents. I’ll take Kaeding at Chico against any of the top drivers in the Country any night of the week. Rumors flying around the pit area tonight included a return by Tim Kaeding next week at Chico driving the Tom Rolfe Trucking #10. Stephen Allard finished second. Green finished in the fourth spot while Andy Greg rounded out the top five. Becker finished sixth. Willie Croft, driving the Tom Rolfe Trucking #10 tonight, finished seventh. Croft started the night off by turning the fastest lap in qualifying at a 12.013. Jason Botsford finished in the eighth spot while Matt Shelton ran ninth. Robert Stice finished in the tenth spot and earned the Pedro the Lawn Boy award worth a whopping $106 dollars because the kid had mowed more lawns this week.
On Jessee Heating and Air Night it was fitting that Johnny Gray dominated the 12-lap B main event. Shelton finished second and Botsford was third. Miller finished fourth but as reported early scratched from the A main event. This allowed DeCaires the chance to start in the feature.
Heat races were lengthy this evening. Five flips and seven cautions throughout the four heat races were unusual to witness when most of the season the heat races are caution free. Trevor Green won the first heat race. Zack Mason beat Sean Becker to the checkered flag in heat two. Brent Kaeding had a half straight lead when he crossed the checkered flag in heat three. Doug Lippincott returned from semi retirement to win the fourth heat race.

Press Release
Santa Maria, CA - June 23, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, Fox 11 First at Ten Super Streets, Mini Stocks and BCRA Midget Lites combined with California Lightning Sprints brought plenty of racing action to Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.
*Point leader Jesse Mack, of Visalia, took the early lead in the 30-lap Bandit Sprint Car feature event and held the lead for 13 laps before being passed by Camarillo's Dennis Rodriguez, Jr. Hugging the bottom groove, Rodriguez drew the yellow flag twice to be warned about cutting the track by going below the berm that separates the racing surface from the apron of the race track. The low groove was fast but the high groove proved to be quicker and Rodriguez was repassed by Mack on the 19th circuit. Greg Porte, of Atascadero, and Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, also got by Rodriguez, leaving the order at the finish: Mack, Porte, Thompson and Rodriguez. Ron Wade, of Bellflower, came home fifth. It was Mack's fourth victory of the season. Eric Severson, of Torrance, set fast time of 15.263 seconds and won an 8-lap heat race. The other heat race winners were Porte and Wade.
*The 25-lap Super Street main event was a wire-to-wire win for Santa Maria's Tim Randolph, his second of the season. Two more Santa Maria drivers, Joey Silva and Tom Breshears placed second and third, followed by Nipomo's Kyle Heckman and Santa Maria's Elton Shaffer. Shaffer and Heckman captured 6-lap heat races.
*It took just five laps for point leader Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, to pass Lompoc's Mike Weigel for the lead in the 20-lap Mini Stock feature event. From there it was an easy drive for Kehs to his fourth main event win of the season. Second in points, Justin Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, finished second in the event and Matt Sweeney, of Van Nuys, had his best result of the season, placing third. Fourth was Ben Caswell, of Santa Barbara, and fifth went to Weigel. The 8-lap heat races were taken by Greg Noah, of Arroyo Grande, and Justin Marsh of Nipomo.
*BCRA Midget Lites ran a combined event with California Lightning Sprints that produced a 27-car field for the night's racing program. The cars are scaled down open wheel race cars that look like winged midgets and sprints. They are powered by motorcycle engines and, due to their wings and light weight, are actually able to turn faster times than the 360 sprints. Fast time for the division was a 13.615 set by El Cajon's David Bezio. Bezio, Donny Gansen, of Rialto, Sam Corso, of Ripon, and Cristen Stover, of Alpine, all won 8-lap heat races but had problems in the 20-lap feature. Bezio and Gansen took each other out early in the run, Corso took himself out while battling for the lead, and Stover had to settle for eighteenth, after leading from lap 13 to the final circuit when he suddenly lost drive. Bakersfield's Rob Ely looked like he would take the win but Marysville's Chris Glass had just enough to get by for the surprise victory. Ely was second; Jarrett Kramer, of Spring Valley, third; Mike Valentine, of Canyon Lake, fourth; and, Dallen McKenney, of Clovis, fifth.
*Next Saturday night Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks will be in action on the 1/3-mile oval. Tickets prices will be $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road. ******

Marysville Raceway Park Press Release 6.24.07 For immediate release By Bob Burbach
Ollar wins with last lap pass Shelby and Russum dominate
Jamie Ollar of Marysville never gave up and just slipped by Blane Baker on the last lap in the 3rd closest finish ever in main event competition at Marysville Raceway Park. Paul and Kathy Hawes presented a quickly paced program that included dominant feature event victories by Yuba City's Phillip Shelby in the KKCY Street Stock finale and Sacramento's Pat Russum in the Wingless Warrior Sprint Car Series. A rip-roaring Extreme Bomber exhibition brought down the curtain on the night's activities. A noisy, appreciative crowd enjoyed the entertaining program on the hooked up and fast clay surface.
In the KKCY Street Stock Series Phillip Shelby pulled one of the all time monster moves on lap one. Shelby started 6th in the field as the green flag flew. Shelby darted to the bottom and followed 5th starting Jerry Bartlett into one. Shelby freight trained three cars and was 3rd as the field headed up the back chute. Shelby stayed on the bottom and clicked off the next three cars and led coming off of four on lap one! It was a spectacular passing display and Shelby simply checked out after that. The 2006 champion finally found what had been missing this year and the rest of the field fought for 2nd after lap one.
4th starting Ray Benkowski dropped to 6th in the early going and then started to claw his way back to the front. Benkowski became the show as he got back to 5th in two more circuits and finally 4th behind Jerry Bartlett who was parked behind a surprisingly quick, front row starter Guy Bean. Then Bartlett and Benkowski continued what has been a season long duel for position. It was another good one as Benkowski hounded the 3-time champion relentlessly. Bartlett was up to the task and kept the blue 25 at bay for a pair of laps. As the Bartlett-Benkowski battle approached Bean, Benkowski dove to the bottom in three. Benkowski used Bean as a pick and roared by both into 2nd. Bartlett quickly recovered and slipped by Bean into 3rd. Heather Bartlett eclipsed Bean shortly thereafter and found 4th. Two long green flag segments completed the event. The yellow flag segment that split them gave Benkowski and Bartlett another shot at Shelby, but that was irrelevant. Shelby led easily to the checkers.
The defending champion endured a relentless oil leak and smoked a little bit all night long. Shelby was candid in victory lane when he said, "…we've finally figured something out…and we still cant find the oil leak." Oil leak or not, the victory combined with Heather Bartlett's 4th place finish vaulted the defending champion into the unofficial point lead (all races are official at the close of business on Tuesday).
The KKCY Mini Stocks were next up and this one turned into a stellar, crowd-pleasing duel to the end. Early race action saw Eric Jones, Ollar and Marysville's James Foster in a tight knot fighting for the top spot. Yuba City's Blane Baker had the point lead coming into Saturday's race and he was passing his way to the front in the early going.
The Jones-Ollar-Foster slugfest included fender rubbing and heart stopping, 3-wide action at times. Baker was 4th after awhile and began to close on the leaders as a quick series of yellow flags slowed the action.
In the latter part of the event a long green flag segment allowed lapped traffic into the mix. Foster was the best through traffic and pulled a five-car length lead. Another quick yellow allowed Ollar to close up and at the new green, he secured 1st place. He began to pull out a lead. Baker found 3rd as Jones had to pit for repairs. Then Baker began to really hook up. Baker got by Foster with 5 laps to go and closed rapidly on Ollar as they both, again picked up heavy lapped traffic. Foster retired to the pits with mechanical troubles with but a handful of laps left.
Then it was on. With tree to go Baker made a slick inside move and grabbed the top spot. He held it to the white flag. The pair encountered slow traffic as they approached turn three on the final lap. Ollar chose high, Baker chose low. Baker was hampered on the low side by a car that slid sideways in four. It appeared Baker had to lift for an instant. Ollar with a clear high side run stayed in the gas and his momentum was significant off of four. A lapped car split the battling duo as they headed to the flag. Ollar won by less than a car length in front of fans who were literally screaming at the finish.
Overshadowed by the war up front was the great drive to 3rd place by Berry Creek's Floyd Youngblood. Youngblood continues to climb in the point standings with his best season ever. In post race inspection, Baker's car was not in compliance with the rules and he was disqualified from the event moving Youngblood into 2nd followed by Suttter's Joel Giusti and a resurgent Robert Luster.
In the Wingless Warrior MRP Wingless Sprint Car feature Sacramento's Pat Russum won, yet again. An unprecedented accomplishment in any MRP sprint car series ever. It was his 6th in a row. The race started off with Russum and his archrival for the title, Mark Hill side by side in row three. A great early race battle ensued between Sacramento's John Anderson and Tim Sherman Jr. Russum and Hill started to move and got to 3rd and 4th quickly as the leaders raced high and low on the perfectly manicured ¼ mile.
A quick yellow flag brought Russum and Hill right behind the lead duo. Sherman and Anderson renewed their fight at the new green, but Russum and Hill were now in the mix. The 30 lapper was near the 1/3 mark when Russum got by Anderson on the low side in turn four for 2nd. Then a great high side pass of Sherman, by Russum was negated by another yellow flag shortly thereafter.
Russum made short work of Sherman at the new green bringing Hill along in tow. Russum pulled to a ¼ lap lead with a clear track ahead. That was the race…almost. With five laps left Russum took a weird line and bounced high in the air in turn 1. His right front suspension had started to break away. Hill started to close quickly, but Russum's ¼ lap lead was helpful. He needed every bit of the distance to nurse his crippled mount to the flag. He did just that and muscled the #7 to the flag. Hill was 2nd and Sherman held on to an excellent 3rd.
Once again, the Extreme Bomber race was an enormous crowd pleaser. At announcer Tim Gilbert's urging, the majority of the crowd stayed around to see the mechanical carnage and they were not disappointed. What again turned into a circular destruction derby was a hoot…with a twist. The participants had to race the wrong way on the track. The clockwise direction created a memorable sight as the racers punt, passed and kicked their way around the track. A number of the cars were piloted by unknown, reasonably crazy people. Others were piloted by serious sprint car racers and some by contenders for the mini-stock and stock car championships. Who was in what was sometimes unobtainable, and for the most part, those that rode with the drivers probably will need counseling…and soon. The promoter later explained to this observer that someone with the moniker of "Taco" had actually won. Mini Stock driver James Foster led for the most part until his car expired on the backstretch. A series of hits, spins and general mechanical mayhem occurred between the flags. Even after the checkers had flown. Pacific Sprint Car star Brandon Dozier actually jumped the banking on the infield Kart track AFTER the flag had flown. Other post-flag hits and spins kept the crowd yelling well after the scheduled end of the show.It was great fun for all. Promoter Paul Hawes decided to sit this one out after last week's harrowing ride in the Enforcer. Next week is Kids Night. Sponsored by Merritt Brothers Racing, this edition promises to be the best. Some 200 prizes will be given away to youngsters 12 and under. A Bike, DVD player, 60 racing t-shirts and hundreds of other prizes will be given away. Kids under 12 are FREE for the show that will feature the return of the Winged MRP Pacific Sprint Cars, the KKCY Stocks and Mini Stocks. The SORA Sprint 100s will round out the exciting 4-division program. Pit gates always open at 3PM. Pit meeting and pill draw are at 5PM. Spectator Gates Open at 5PM with racing getting underway at 7PM. Contact the promoters at 1.530.743.1327 or email as indicated on the home page. Croft wins 1st GSC main event of season in Quincy By Gary Thomas
Quincy, CA - June 23, 2007...One of the most improved drivers this year in California 410 sprint car racing has undoubtably been Sacramento’s Willie Croft, but coming into this past weekend’s event at the American Valley Speedway in Quincy, the driver known as "Double Down" hadn’t captured a feature event victory yet this season. Everybody knew that sooner or later he was going to get it done, however, and on Saturday night the 35 year-old driver was able to put it all together and led flag to flag aboard the Tom Rolfe Trucking, Holey Smokes BBQ, BR Motorsports No. 10 to pick up his second career win with the series. The night of action was the first time that the Golden State Challenge Series had ever competed at the narrow and long 3/8 mile track located in beautiful Quincy, Calif.
The 30 lap main event started out with Chico’s Johnny Gray on the pole after he drove the Jessee Heating & Air No. 71 to his first ever GSC dash win earlier in the program. The first start saw Tracy’s Jason Botsford and Rio Vista’s Dan Simpson spin on the front-stretch to bring out a caution. During the yellow, pole sitter Gray was set back two rows for jumping the initial start. This moved Croft up to the pole position alongside 12-time King of California Brent Kaeding. On the next attempted start a car near the front of the pack got sideways in turn four and it created a huge log jam which saw a few cars get upside down and handful of other cars involved. Cars that got a piece of the action included flip victims Pat Harvey, Danny Bullock & Mark Workentine as well as Brett Miller, Jason Botsford, Matt Shelton and Jonathan Allard.
The next start saw Croft blast into the lead, but he felt a bit of pressure early on from Kaeding. Earlier this season in Tulare, Croft led 26 laps in the feature before the 12-time champ was able to get around him to steal the win away with less than five laps left in the contest. Kaeding had won eight GSC feature’s going into Quincy and was also coming off a win the previous night in Chico during track point race competition. He looked to be in good position early on, but during a red flag on lap nine for Matt Shelton, BK had to change a right rear tire which forced him to go to the rear of the field. After that Croft had no problems up front, except for an incident on lap 16 that nearly took away his shot at winning.
As the caution came out for youngster Brent Bjork who had spun in turn two in front the leaders, Croft slid to the infield to avoid him and contacted one of the infield tractor tires. He bounced off the tire into another tire and looked like it was going to make him stop, but somehow he kept the engine lit and moved the tire out of the way to continue on. The only damage was a bent front wing but it didn’t slow him down as he went on to drive the LRB Manufacturing, Amerikote High Temp Coatings, D & D Roofing No. 10 to his first victory of the season. Croft’s only previous win with the Golden State Challenge Series came in 2004 when he picked up the win at the Mini Gold Cup in Chico while driving the Fisher/Main Motorsports No. 35m.
Ironically the Fisher/Main Motorsports No. 35m finished second at Quincy as Sean Becker drove a solid race to finish runner-up to Croft. It was Becker’s series leading 18th top 10 finish of the season aboard the Cherry St. Mini Storage, Rolling Hills Reality, ART Enterprise sponsored machine.
Campbell’s Brent Kaeding made an outstanding charge back through the field to finish an impressive third after changing the right rear earlier in the race. BK’s Al’s Roofing Supply, Kaeding Performance, Selco Heating & Air No. 69 was lightning fast as he passed cars high and low coming back through the pack. Kaeding’s win in Chico the previous night was extremely impressive and he followed it up with another stout performance in Quincy, a track he won at last August. The podium finish was the 16th time this season that the living legend has finished in the top five with the series.
Chico’s Brett Miller came back to finish fourth aboard the Care Free Pools, Platinum Powder Coating, Smartwebsales.com No. 1x. After the first lap incident Miller charged back through the field to tie his career best GSC finish which he accomplished the previous event in Medford. Rounding out the top five was Chico’s Jonathan Allard aboard the Williams Motorsports, K & N Filters, Red Line Oil No. 0. Like Kaeding and Miller, Allard also charged back through the field after going to rear earlier in the race.
Completing the top 10 in the feature was the Nor Cal Performance No. Kr14 of Tyler Spath, the Superior Hydraulics No. 49 of Mike Monahan, the Adrad Radiatar No. 11au of Trevor Green, the DL Tabor Construction No. 36n of Mark Tabor Sr. and the Extreme Fabrication No. 29 of Jason Botsford.
The six lap dash was picked off by Johnny Gray and the three 10 lap heats were captured by Brent Kaeding, Gray and Sean Becker. Jonathan Allard set the mark in qualifying with a lap of 15.200 around the long 3/8 mile dirt oval.
Curt Nieman, Jim Richardson and the American Valley Speedway staff have to be commended for making the event possible. A large crowd witnessed a rather entertaining feature and many people in attendance had a great time. Silver Dollar Speedway announcer Troy Hennig came over for the event and did a bang up job on the mic as usual. The American Valley Speedway will also be holding a non-sanctioned 410 winged sprint car race later this Summer on August 25. More info visit http://www.avspeedway.com
