Will we see a new winner in the UMSS series? Ive been at most of the races and it seems like Tatnell is going to wipe the slate clean..... thoughts?

I don't think it is weird at all Tatnell is good. If you think he should race at Knoxville then put him in your car at Knoxville or if you think he should race Woo then finance a Woo ride for him. He is a racer and will race wherever he can. We try to race with him and learn from him so we can get good enough to beat him, if you don't race with better racers I don't think you can improve much. The UMSS has a good rules package so the cars and motors are pretty even. Try getting good enough to beat him then you wont have to bitch about him.

Well said !Tatnell very seldom misses the set up but if he does just a little and the competitors are on their game and striving to get better he will get beat occasionally. I beat Dave Stevenson on championship A-feature night by a half a car length by not giving up and putting the car where it wanted to run. Brian Brown is a fine example at this years Knoxville Nationals. He has steadly improved and had a great run out of turn four and only lost by a few feet. Racing is luck and skill you have to be in the hunt when someone as good as Brook bobbles ever so slightly.Being smooth and saving the tires has won a lot of races and that is a skill learned over time with setup and notes over yrs of experience.

It's either run with the UMSS and win an occasional race elsewhere when he has a ride or the Forest Lake Walmart. Brooke is a career race car driver who won a couple WoO Features as recently as two seasons ago. He's good enough to be running with the Outlaws but has established roots with his family here in Forest Lake. If Brooke Tatnell lived in Indiana, Ohio or Pennsylvania he'd most likely have a full time regional ride in that area. I don't think it's any secret that there is not an over abundance of Sprint Car owners in the Twin Cities area, it's mostly owner/drivers running their own cars with UMSS or at Arlington. I don't see how you can think Tatnell is a bad guy for getting caught up in the economic downturn and scraping by trying to put groceries on the table the only way he knows, by driving a race car.
Look around at the All Stars, Posse, and Knoxville there are a bunch of former WoO racers in the same situation. No owners willing to throw a couple million per season away to see their name on a WoO wing and many former Outlaws running locally around the country. The 360 he's driving belongs to his friend David Craft out of Australia and he's leasing a motor from Jared Goerges. There is probably fresher and newer stuff running UMSS but it's a testament to Brooke's talent and determination that he's making some grocery money with what's available.
I'm sure the UMSS would welcome Steve Kinser, Donny Schatz, Craig Dollansky and Sammy Swindell if they wanted to run with them too. Those drivers aren't in a situation where they have to. Driving talent is god given, mechanical knowledge is learned, the financial backing takes good contacts, being in the right place at the right time and plenty of luck. Brooke won that Knoxville 360 Nationals preliminary Feature in a UMSS car, the Nelson 14.

Just be glad we have the UMSS and people like Brooke to watch up here. Quit complaining and support them or soon we will have nothing but sport compacts to watch. I'd rather watch sprints idle around the track!

You hit the nail on the head Stan! Brooke is a very talented and respectable racer doing what he loves and is very very good at! Over time cream rises to the top and God willing there will probably be a new Brooke Tatnell so to speak. I remember a time in racing not all that long ago when a kid from North Dakota came about with a great supportive father and resouces enough to have good equipment. They raced and learned and raced and learned and raced and learned. Pretty soon this young man could nearly lap the field and moved on to the bigger leagues with a number 15 on his car. With the UMSS rules I know for a fact there are cars capable of beating Brooke so the factor in it is driver and crew. Respect Brooke and learn from him! I would bet if you talked with Brooke he could tell you of a mentor or two that he learned from. The Nelsons could put another drive in their car and Brook could strap in lets say Chris Graf's car and I think I know who I would bet on for now. In the future this can and does change as new talents develope. Keep an eye out and watch Andy Jones and Chris G. and others as they get more seat time and pick up a good sponsor or two. It is easy to get down on a good racer and a lot harder to beat him to the checkers and even Brooke has lost to other talent.

If itwasn't for Tatnell, I don't think I'd be coming to many sprint car races. I like his hard charging driving style. Always enjoy visiting his trailer! This guy lives racing 24 hours a day.

Tony Norem and Lou Kennedy, Jr. have defeated Tatnell in 2012 in UMSS competition, but they are the only two drivers to have done so, as Tatnell has won 7 out of the 9 races he has run with the UMSS. Brooke has missed three shows, so for those fans who are concerned about him winning everything, he won't win the point title (he wasn't going for that anyways).
Per Ron B, we might see a pretty stout driver race with the UMSS a couple of times this weekend. I believe Brooke is planning on racing with us again this weekend, so we'll see if that driver is able to make it up this way or if any one of the other competitive UMSS drivers can defeat him. If you want to get better, you have to be able to beat better competition or at least race against a higher level of competition in order to learn.

I agree with all of these points and have nothing against Tatnell....He is VERY talented... But what is the MAIN purpose of the UMSS as a small Midwest start up class?

To me, a start up class doesn't mean it is only for rookies. Yes, its is an entry point, but its also a training ground. One doesn't get very good if the only people one trains against also are learing. Having a lots of inexperienced racers means always having someone to race against; sometimes for a top 5 spot but often for 5th to 15th. But having fast cars, means having to dig deep and really learn something about driving and setup.
If you want to learn to race sprint cars, you are going to have to chase some fast guys long enough to learn how to beat them. Personally, I got my butt handed to me plenty by John Stevenson, Bob Hopp, The Dude, Jerry Jr, Wolfgang, ... (too many to list), plus Mr. Roger, The Racer, Rager;( the only of that list to race the Indy 500. isn't Indy just a class or two above Wissota 360s). I think I became a better driver because of being so out-classed in my early years. I also was a better driver anytime I had strong, competitive peers (also a long list). Then there are all the "kids" that learned and beat me and the other fast guys... that really makes to sit up in the seat and drive.
Bottom line, this is competition and an open sport. Best learn now, cause it only gets tougher
