Travis Johnson Again in NCRA Sport Mods in Amarillo!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Amarillo, Texas - June 23, 2012 - Travis Johnson survived a late race charge from Robert Elliott to win his third feature in a row as the Bob Howard PDC and Mopar National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products southern sort modified division made their annual appearance to Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas Saturday night.

Johnson and Bobby Carter started on the front row for the twenty-five lap feature and when drivers controlled themselves after three cautions caused aborted starts, Johnson took the lead when racing action finally got underway.

Kelly Pruett, Jeffery Kaup and Robert Elliott were your top five after lap one as Carter stayed glued to the leaders rear bumper. Elliott took over the fourth position from Kaup on lap seven and set his sights on the front runners.

By lap ten the top four cars began to distance themselves from the rest of the field as Johnson continued to hold off repeated challenges by Carter.

A caution on lap eleven bunched up the field and on the restart, Johnson throttled his #86j Carol's Racing Engines powered Big Chief Racing Chassis ahead of Carter once again while Elliott disposed of Pruett one lap later for third.

Seventeenth starting Chad McNamara began making his presence felt with ten laps to go as he moved into the fifth position and had the leaders in his sights.

Elliott, aboard the #21 Johnie Rauschenburg owned Fine Roofing sponsored machine, took over the runner up position from Carter on lap sixteen and set up a late race showdown between him and Johnson for the second night in a row.

The final caution of the night fell on lap eighteen when C&P Racing Supply rookie of the year contender Chris Lyons spun in turn four.

This brought a seven lap showdown and on the restart, Elliott stayed glued to Johnson's rear bumper with both drivers starting to distance themselves from drivers behind him.

Elliott moved up to the middle groove, where he had moved to pass those for position earlier but just couldn't make his way around Johnson. The veteran Clinton, Oklahoma driver tried one last time exiting turn four on the final lap but fell just two car lengths short as Johnson picked up his tour leading tenth victory in the series southern sport modified four year history.

McNamara moved into the third position with two laps to go and would finish there while Carter was the highest finishing local driver in fourth. Kaup came home with a solid fifth place finish.

The eight lap heat races for the forty car field were won by Pat McNabb, Kelly Pruett, Johnson, Kaup and Elliott. The twin "B" features were won by McNamara and G&P Racing Supply rookie contender Caleb Edwards.
