Matt Sutton Dominates Lee County for Sprint Invaders Win!

(Bill W) June 21, 2012 – It was a clean sweep for Matt Sutton of Macomb, Illinois Thursday night at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa. He led every lap for his fourth career victory at the 3/8-mile oval in Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invaders competition.

Sutton won his heat, then drew a starting spot outside of row one for the Dash. He went on to win that, and drew a one for the feature, setting himself up on the pole. Tyler Blank shot to the lead on the first try at a start, but it was called back when Matt Krieger tipped over.

Sutton protected the low side on the second attempt, and pulled away. Things went green until a spin by Harold Pohren collected Jordan Goldesberry on lap six. On the restart, Sutton led Blank, Tony Shilling, Russ Hall and Justin Parrish.

Shilling was able to move by Blank into second after the restart, and things stayed green until a Travis Porter spin with three laps to go. Shilling tried to make a last dash move on the top of turns one and two, but spun his wheels. Blank capitalized to follow Sutton home in second at the checkers. Shilling settled for third, ahead of Hall and Parrish.

"What a night!" said Sutton in Victory Lane. "Chris (McGraw) has the car working and we have a handle on these Super Shox now. This was an exact copy of when we won here in 2006. We knew there was rubber down in the Dash. We didn't change a thing all night. I'm happy we didn't squander this opportunity."

"I wish that first start would have stuck," said Blank of the initial start. "We would have won the race. We were fast all night. We didn't change anything but the right rear for the feature. I'm glad (Shilling) made the move he did, but I would have done the same."

"I knew that if I had to risk losing a spot to win it, I would do it," said Shilling of his attempt at the lead after the restart. "We were tightening the car up as the night went on."

Following the top five were Ryan Jamison, Jerrod Hull, Ben Wagoner, hard charger Bobby Mincer and Andy Huston. Blank, Jamison and Parrish joined Sutton as heat winners. Mincer won the B main.

The Sprint Invaders travel to the 34 Raceway on Tuesday, July 3. They will run their feature from April 14, as well as a full program that evening. Don't miss it!

Track prep ruined the racing on such a beautiful evening.

Nice field of sprint cars, but it has to be so disappointing for a driver to get a bad pill draw and know you are screwed for the rest of the night. The dust cloud that broiled up toward the grandstands on each start looked like something from a horror movie.

The bad news...the racing really sucked.

The good news... beautiful weather, good friends, stock cars went non-stop in their feature ( you would never get Vegas odds on that ) and I am sure I left with more than $12 worth of good Iowa dirt on me.

I know crap happens so I will give Lee County Speedway one more try.

Dry slick seems to be the norm EVERWHERE these days. Lack of rain, possible lack of time put into track prep, and even the environmental concerns that do not allow tracks to use chloride or other chemicals to hold the water. That, coupled with the economy, promoters are using more support classes for their back gate money, and more cars means more laps on the track. The old days, we had Super Mods/Sprints and Sportsman/Late Models, that was it. You are getting more bang for your buck as far as racing goes, but not necessarily better racing. JMO

That's the first time I've seen the track like that there. They always put on a good show and as the saying goes Sh!t happens. I will be back anytime they run sprints there.

I know rubber down race tracks are going to happen. It happens everywhere, but last night was from lack of track prep. It was dry slick during hot laps. For the first time ever I was disappointed for going to a sprint car race. The race last night was determined on pill draw. I know that the pill draw normally determines how great or bad your night starts out, but it shouldn't determine where you finish in the feature. I have seen day races with a race the night before better then that. I was told last night from a driver that they don't get pissed off about junking a brand new tire in a heat race, as long as they are racing and not just following the leader. I will attend another race there and maybe take my sprinter there, but I just thought I would give my opinion about the track. I know it wont make a difference but there is always hope. wink

Congratulations to Matt Sutton on this win. Although I don't think we were ever even in a position to see much past last at Lee County, I know that Destini liked driving around there. We had never been to the place prior to last night and I must say that they have a pretty neat facility there. We look forward to getting to run there again. I did notice that there wasn't much racing going on though, and I was going to ask if that was common there, but after reading the comments here I can see that it isn't.

Man, that would be awesome, I love wingless racing. But I could never get my kid to try it. She LOVES the wing car.
