Prelude To The Dirt Cup Prepares To Invade Two Northwest Tracks
By Ben Deatherage
Vancouver, Washington- The road to this year’s Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at the Skagit Speedway in Alger is laid with many test this season. Two of those obstacles are two events at some the country’s most beautiful venues the Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Oregon and the Grays Harbor Raceway located in Elma.
The Willamette Speedway on Monday June 11th will be hosting their first 410 Sprint race of the season and many fans and drivers will be excited to see the facility with all of the upgrades done over the offseason. Such upgrades include new aluminum seating, new lighting, new catch fence and retaining wall, and whole list of other features that have made it become a world-class facility.
At the Grays Harbor Raceway the “House That Fred (Brownfield) Built” will bring in the 410 Sprints for the first time as well. It will be the first race since September 2008 that 410 Sprints will be in action at GHR after a string of rain outs cancelled the World of Outlaws visits in 2009 and 2010.
Both events will pay $3,000.00 to win and $200.00 to start for the features. A bonus will be given to the top five finishing 360 Sprints which will give the highest finisher $300.00, second $200.00, and third through fifth place finishers $100.00 each.
For the 410 events at the Willamette Speedway and the Grays Harbor Raceway the tire rule will be unique for teams planning to make the trips to race. The tire rule will accommodate both Hoosier and Goodyear tires but will have a spec right rear of both brands. For the Hoosiers it will be the HTW or ASCS Med and for Goodyear it will be the 100 or 200 compounds.
The Willamette Speedway has operated since the 1960’s and has been regarded as the “Late Model Capital of the Northwest” for many years and is anxious to host fans with the vast upgrades and improvements done over the 2011-12 winter. The venue will host the World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series and the American Sprint Car Series-National Tour along with weekly action comprising of DirtCar Late Models, USRA Modifieds, Sportsman, Classics, and Mini Trucks. All I saw on KWS was the race in Chico and Medford which were KWS races I never heard of the other races scheduled in Oregon and Gray's I am flying down from Alaska for the dirt cup, if I would of known this I would of flown into Sac and with my Mom living in Chico I would of takin the whole week off and followed them all the way to Skagit, BUMMER
