Anyone think that either Tony or Kasey due to their star status and ability to draw big sponsor dollars for their open wheel cars in the WoO and USAC, do they actually come out even, lose a little money or make a profit. I have no idea.
also, reading one of the many back issues of Sprint Car and Midget magazine that I ordered, in a 3 or 4 year old issue, an interview with still famous Speedy Bill Smith, that back in the late 40s and in the early 50s, they would lose 2 to 5 drivers per year at Knoxville and also that about that many were maimed each year because it was such a fast and dangerous track and the cars were very dangerous. They didn't have the money to hire a hearse or whatever they would use, to haul drivers who lost their lives back home, that some were actually hauled back home in the tow vehicle? Is that possibly true.
Smith said that back then, when taking his driver from Lincoln to Knoxville, he got so worried that he often thought he was taking his driver to a guillotine (spelling??).

Got a friend who raced in the 50's & 60's and he said it was not uncommom to lose drivers every year. No roll bars, no fire suits, no fuel cells, and probably no safety crews either. Today's cars and safety equipment are way better and safer.
As far as TSR and KKR racing making any money, if they do make a profit it would be small. Both love sprint cars and they probably use these as a way to write off losses.

I have no way of knowing if TSR or KKR make or lose money. However, Tony did park some of his USAC team last year. I think that he parked one of the Sprint car teams and one of the midget teams, but he did pick up a lot of races for his (personal; #14) wing sprint car.
I imagine that the goal is to break even. Any money made is just put back into the teams, but I don't think either one of them is reaching deep into there pockets to keep the teams on the road.

Smoke and Kasey don't spend any money out their own pockets. Their NASCAR star power allows them to find sponsors for the dirt programs. Rick Stenhouse Jr is helping Jason Johnson this year too. I think Bobby Labonte has a dirt late model team as well as Clint Bowyer. It'd be awesome of more of those guys did the same. Gordon, Newman, and others who came through open wheel could all find sponsors for a team if they wanted. Unfortunately they just don't like it well enough to spend the energy it takes to do so. That's fine. It's their money and time. I don't hold it against them for not doing it. But I DO appreciate the ones who do.

They wouldn't be doing this if they lost money. That's just dumb. No matter how much they love it, if they're losing money they're not doing it. Think about it, Kasey had to drop McMahan.
They're doing just fine with the big name sponsors. I have to wonder how long Darrah sticks around on KKR with no big name sponsorship this season.

You know what they say
"In order to make a small fortune in racing, you must start out with a large one"

I think it is almost impossible to make money with a midget team. I guess you do it for the love of the sport Tony and KK race for a living, so every cost can be deducted. I think they make money when taxes are done. A weekend racer can not do that. Karl Kinser said that the last year they raced he made $2,000.

KKR and TSR neither have midget teams anymore. (Chili Bowl excluded for KKR, even though I was told that those rides weren't free to their drivers/mechanics). So apparently midgets really suck at making any money back. Well hell, USAC cars period for that matter. Everyone always keeps the wing stuff around. Even Loyet switched over to running winged cars instead of messing with midgets every week.
do it in the dirt

If I had Smoke's (or even Kasey's) bank account balance - I wouldn't worry tooooo awful much about the possibility of losing/spending a couple hundred-thousand or so on having a helluba lotta fun on my off days -- or for that matter "giving back to my roots". There's a lot of folks who do somewhat the same (albeit with often a LOT less spare bucks to spend) and, granted likely on a somewhat smaller scale, for/on their "hobbys".
