ALTAMONT MOTORSPORTS PARK HOSTS "OPEN WHEEL MADNESS" NIGHT THIS SATURDAY

Tracy, Calif., June 13, 2007 - Altamont Motorsports Park will host its first "Open Wheel Madness" night of the season on June 16th featuring fast-paced racing action from some of the West Coast's best open wheel touring series including USAC-CASA Sprints, USAC Midgets and Ford Focus, NCMA Sprints and The Legends of the Pacific.

In 2006, Altamont Motorsports Park was awarded the Race Organizer of the Year Award by the United States Automobile Club (USAC) racing organization.

Ryan Kaplan will lead the Lucas Oil USAC Western Sprint Car Series to this Saturday's "Open Wheel Madness" program at Altamont Motorsports Park. The event also features USAC's Western Midgets and the Sprint portion is co-sanctioned by CASA, showcasing "The Best of The West."

Kaplan won the last Western Sprint race at Roseville, Calif. in late May and holds a six-point lead over JoJo Helberg. Lady driver Shauna Hogg, Greg Anderson and former USAC champions Kody Swanson and Tony Hunt are also in title contention.

Hunt (2), Bradley Galedrige and Nick Green won last year's USAC Sprint races at Altamont Motorsports Park.

Johnny Rodriguez of Elk Grove, Calif. will try to protect his lead in the USAC Western Midget Series. Rodriguez leads Scott Pierovich by 38 points with Rodriguez' car owner and teammate only 39 points back going into Saturday night's program.

Tony Hunt, Ryan Kaplan and Kody Swanson won USAC Midget races last year at Altamont Motorsports Park.

Qualifying gets underway at 2:30pm with the Heats and Mains scheduled to start at 4:30pm. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for Seniors and $15 for Youth.

The USAC-CASA Sprint cars will return to the track on Saturday, August 8th for the "More Open Wheel Madness!" night.

Altamont Motorsports Park will get back to local NASCAR Whelen All-American Short Track racing at the end of the month with Western Late Model Twin 50s, Grand American Modifieds and American Limited Stock Cars scheduled for June 30th.

In 3 weeks, this track runs what probably is the 832nd greatest spectacle in racing - The 24 Hours of Lemons. Here's the blurb on it;

Each LeMons race is for cars purchased, fixed up, and track-prepped for a total of 500 dollars or less. But before reaching the grid, you'll have to survive trials like the Personal-Injury-Lawyer Anti-Slalom, the Marxist-Valet Parking Challenge, and the Wide Open Throttle Rodthrowapalooza. Twelve hours into the race, the car voted People’s Choice is called in and awarded a cash prize; simultaneously, the car voted People’s Curse is called in and summarily destroyed. At the end of 24 hours, a gala awards ceremony plies the survivors with trophies, plaques, and four-figure purses in canvas bags full of nickels. What's not to like?

I SO want to compete in this event before I die.
