Northwest Wingless Tour Anticipates Season Opener Saturday
By Ben Deatherage

Cottage Grove, Oregon- The Northwest Wingless Tour is poised to open their 2012 season at the Sunset Speedway Park in Banks, located just outside of the city of Portland, on Saturday May 5th. The touring group enters its fourth year of existence and has become the “Northwest’s Premier Wingless Series”. The group will be running the majority of their season at SSP but will venture out of the metropolitan area on a handful of occasions to the Willamette Speedway in Lebanon and the Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington. If the event gets completed it will mark the first time in the storied history of the series that the season has opened at the venue and the third different facility in four years.

In three years of competition there have been three different champions from the likes of Kyle Miller, Theo McCarty, and Corey Estaban. In the three previous seasons there have been three different season opener winners which includes the following drivers: (Cottage Grove Speedway April 25th, 2009) Kyler Barraza, (Grays Harbor Raceway June 12th, 2010) Jeff Bell, and (Cottage Grove Speedway April 30th, 2011) Kyle Miller.

The Northwest Wingless Tour has been providing fans of Non-Wing Sprint Cars entertainment to tracks through the Pacific Northwest since 2009. The series has become a place where the odds are surely evened no matter what the drivers background whether it be Winged/Non-Wing, 360, or Limited Sprint experience. I don't usually post negative stuff on here but I couldn't help noticing that they have lots of races at Sunset Speedway, which is a miserable track for wingless sprint cars. In fact, the race last July was one of the worst that I have ever had the displeasure of seeing. The track was dry as a bone with no cushion whatsoever. It was unraceable for sprinters. I felt sorry for the guys out there trying to put on a show. What's worse is that we took friends who had never seen a wingless sprint car race. Needless to say after me talking up the wingless cars so much it was a huge letdown. There were a total of 9 sprint cars that showed up and about a zillion stock cars of various classes. Obviously the NWWT guys that didn't show up must have known what to expect. I was hoping to support this tour once I learned of their existence after having moved up to Oregon from So. Cal., but I doubt I'll waste my money at Sunset Speedway again. I'll make the drive to Elma or maybe down to Willamette. I know that I can't expect every track to be like Perris and that I am very spoiled after years of Ascot and the PAS, but man, what a disappointment to see this.
