Deterding Ding's NCRA Sport Modified Victory Bell at Enid Speedway!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Enid, Oklahoma – April 22, 2012 - Greg Deterding of Pond Creek, Oklahoma earned his first career Bob Howard PDC and Mopar National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products southern sport modified feature victory Sunday evening as the tour made their first of two appearances at Enid Speedway in Enid, Oklahoma.
By virtue of accumulating the most passing and finishing points during heat race competition, Deterding started on the pole for the twenty lap feature and led at the start of the initial green.
A couple of wrecks delayed actual green flag racing with one including Travis Johnson, who came into the night tied atop the point standings with two time and defending series champion Chad McNamara, which ended his night.
Once racing action resumed Deterding got a clean start on the rest of the field and led the first lap with Robert Elliott giving chase.
Only one lap was complete before the red flag appeared when the #9 of Cleo Adams hit the tractor tire protecting the guardrail entering turn one. Adams bounced back onto the track causing Ross McCartney, Craig Ridgeway and series rookie of the year contender Caleb Edwards having nowhere to go and a three car pile with Edwards getting upside down.
Although all cars sustained serious damage, all drivers were uninjured but done for the night.
When racing action resumed, Deterding still held the point with Elliott giving chase, sitting just three car lengths behind. Todd Decker, outside front row starter J.D. Choate and Joe Adams followed with Deterding working the middle portion of the Garfield County fairgrounds three-eighths mile oval.
At the races midway point the leader had stretched out his advantage to six car lengths before Elliott, aboard the Rauschenberg #21, looked to make his move for victory with five laps to go and closed to within one car length. But Deterding would not be denied and went the final five laps virtually unchallenged to claim his first career series victory and $750 winner's check, $250 of that coming from Western Flyer Sport Mods out of Oklahoma City.
Elliott crossed the line in second but declined post race inspection giving Decker and his Bob Howard PDC and Mopar/Godfather's Pizza/DIRT Performance sponsored race car the runner up position. Curtis Allen worked his Western Flyer sport mod up from his twelfth starting position to claim third while last year's division rookie of the year Brandon Smith of Amarillo, Texas came from tenth to fourth. Bobby Smith, Jr. rounded out the top five.
Choate was running near the front in his Adams Race Cars sponsored sport mod until his motor expired with just two laps to go putting him with a twelfth place finish.
The five heat races for the forty car field were won by Decker, J. Adams, J.D. Choate, Cleo Adams and Deterding.
Edwards claimed the first, 12 lap "B" feature while McNamara claimed the second "B" feature.
The next appearance for the Bob Howard PDC and Mopar NCRA southern sport modified division will take place on Saturday night, May 19,th as the tour makes their second of three appearances at 81 Speedway in Park City.
