So how much quieter are they going to be? Hope they are not the ones Logan Forler tested after time trials last year.

This is the new muffler, they are A LOT quieter, they are used by some teams here in Australia, compared to the old Knoxville muffler, they are quiet, 95 DB's.

What's next! Electric Motors?? They will sound the the Little TYCO race cars we had as kids. Part of the experience is the Screamin V8. My guess would be whining neighbors.

There is an article about an electric midget in "Circle Track" - so you might not be too far from the truth. I agree part of the thrill is the "music" of a growling V-8... but if it means racing or no racing - I guess we'll have to learn to live with it being quieter. I know - they knew the track was there when they moved there - but it happens all across the nation. Comply or the track gets it's walking papers.

This isn't anything that the city, or residents that live in the area have compained about.

It's the Raceway being Pro-Active about noise. IMO, good move.

From what John McCoy stated about the muffler when they were testing it last year, it's not really the noise at the track itself where people will notice, the noise just won't carry as far (which is good for city/racetrack relations).

When they stop making noise I'll go more. I don't know how old you are but if you're not wearing hearing protection you'll regret it when you get to be my age. My 60's garage band started messing up my hearing. Hooking planes up to the catapult sure didn't help, afterburners on the old F4's will do a number on a person's ears. I always wear ear plugs at the races, standing in the infield with a camera I get the full brunt of the sound.

I've got tinnitus and have to go "huh" whenever my grandkids say anything to me. I'm still into playing music albeit with a little less volume than back in the day but I'm hoping I can hang onto that for a while. I don't know why hearing damage is considered a badge of honor among some of the racers but take it from an old guy, it's pretty stupid to think that way.

Good point. I spent many years working in steel shops, always amazed when guys didn't wear ear protection, especially if you like music.

That said, noise is part of the appeal. Often I'll start out at races with ear plugs, then take 'em out for "full effect"

will the new muffler cause some horse power loss? Of course it won"t matter since every one has them.

In many cases mufflers can actually improve horsepower as they create some back pressure on the engine. I dont know however if that will be the situation with these mufflers. I think its a good move by the track, the cars will still make plenty of noise it just wont be ear piercing noise.

Cheers!

Still remember the beginning of the tinnitus after a race in Ohio in the 1980's. Ear plugs should have been a must. Two "can't believe " situations for me are seeing people smoke and people at races or loud concerts without hearing protection. Excellent advice, Stan. P.S. I'm glad I don't have to give my wife a dollar each time "huh" is used.

My ears always rang all night after the races but the ringing was gone by morning. But after the USA show at Knoxville in October 1989 my ears never stopped ringing. Doctor says they never will. I say "huh" so much when people talk to me that now I even say it when I actually hear what they said the first time. So a little quieter is good but I really don't want them to sound like a bunch of bumble bees either.

I'm 65 and I vote with Stan and the others on hearing loss. I started with high frequency loss in High School (primarily due to working with farm equipment) and it has gradually worked it's way down over the years. Of course, military service, trap shooting, and hunting without ear protection made a big contribution. I wear $4000 worth of hearing aids and still have trouble with children's and most women's voices. I wear a head set at the races and still am able to hear the cars quite nicely. 95db is still a very loud noise, and if you put 10 of them on the track at one time, it will still make your ears hurt at the end of the night. I appreciate you young guys feeling that the noise is a big factor in racing, but hearing loss is like eating saturated fat. You don't notice any problem at the time, but over the years it builds up and leads to problems (like hearing loss and heart attacks.)

Another expense for all race teams, this will cost all teams some amount of money.

If a rule is to be implemented - then utilize dba at a certain distance and enforce it period.

Do not tell race teams they have to use THIS OR ANY MUFFLER to be acceptable. Conform to a dba limit and no one can complain. Example= Chico has a MUFFLER ( one or two are acceptable ) rule and a dba of 95. Its a bogus rule ( 99.9 percent of the 410 sprint cars exceed the 95 dba easy with the MUFFLERS reguired).

It sucks when tracks or organizations keep spending Teams monies.

Not against quieter race cars= against tracks or organizations that tell a team that they have to use a certain product only. Plenty of Muffler companies that can accomplish the feat as with other PRODUCTS on race cars.

Wanna save teams money. Incorporate a dba limit and enforce - no matter how they get to the limit.

Companys love being the only player.

Its like saying you can only run a FORD- nothing else allowed. (Ford is happpy now)

Its like saying you can only run a Maxim chassis- nothing else allowed. (Maxim is happy now)

etc..

These mufflers cut the HP a fair bit, I know some of the Knoxville guys have been messing with them on the dyno over the winter and have been having troubles with exhaust temps getting too hot, which is costing the teams more money by having to have engines re dyno'd with these mufflers and if exhaust temps are getting hot on track, well that will be costing teams even MORE money, did knoxville sign some new deal with Schoenfield that they are getting a kickback for all the new business they're sending their way?!

I spent 17 years mixing live audio in the music business and another 20 years working turbine powered aircraft. I have had numerous hearing tests over the years, the latest in December 2010. I have lost a little in the higher frequencies, but for a 50 year old with my background, my hearing is in good shape. Tinnitus is nothing to brag about, it has actually driven people to suicide! TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEARING!!! Yes, I yelled...lol...
