Per www.knoxvilleraceway.com - looks like they get it and are GIVING BACK to the local schools as well. Wish other tracks would do stuff like this once in a while...
Wednesday, March 28, 2012 Knoxville Championship Cup Series Race For Your School Night
On April 21st, the action heats up at Knoxville Raceway with the Lucas Oil Knoxville Championship Cup Series season opener sponsored by Pella Motors, and the Knoxville Lions Club. This night will also be a huge fundraiser for area schools with the Pella Motors Race For Your School Night.
All school age kids get in free on Pella Motors Race For Your School Night with a paid adult admission. If that is not enough, for every $15 ticket purchased with a Race For Your School coupon $5 will be donated to the designated school!
In this time of budget troubles and not enough funds for important programs, what better way to raise funds for the schools than a night at the races. Knoxville Raceway will also donate $500 additional dollars to the school that buys the most tickets, $250 to the school with the 2nd highest number of attendees and $100 to the school with the 3rd highest number of attendees.

Prom night in Knoxville. I don't think it's a coincidence.

Good job on Knoxville's part of doing this promotion...bad job of scheduling.

I don't think Prom Night will have any effect.
As a graduate of Knoxville High School (1992), I can say I honestly NEVER attended the weekly races from age 16-18 (only went to Nationals), and those were the hey-day of sprint car racing (Steve, Sammy and Doug would sometimes be there for just weekly shows (prior to Doug's accident at Lakeside). Went prior to then with my parents (couldn't drive) and started going again after graduation. 99.9% of the others my age did the same.
Everyone keeps complaining that we need to get kids to the races, well, this is that opportunity. I know my son (age 8) started going when he was 6 and got hooked (just like I did at that age). The Prom Age kids are at that point where the races don't even make their top 100 things to do - once they move away for a few years for college, job, etc., they'll probably start remembering how great it was to have something like that where they live (that's how it worked for most of the people my age that go now) and start returning whenever they get the chance.
I think the date has more to do with it being Pella Motors Night than anything else. Craig Ford is sponsoring this (and is using advertising for HIS BUSINESS to promote it), why would he want to do it on a weekend where someone else is the night sponsor??
