Weather may play a role in Civil War opener
MRP to host 1st Civil War if weatherman cooperates
By Bob Burbach

Marysville CA - March 12, 2012 --- Promoter Paul Hawes is keeping a close eye on the weather as the opening round of the California Sprint Car Civil War Series is scheduled for this Saturday at MRP. Promoter Hawes told this observer that a call would likely be made Thursday. At this writing however there hasn’t been enough precipitation to largely adversely affect the grounds. However the toughest part of the system in headed toward northern California. But, again its course has been slightly altered and we’ll simply have to wait to see what the next 36 hours brings in the way of precipitation.

The newest version of the Civil War Sprint Car Series will consist of 13 events at six of California's best known race tracks that have all experienced the thrill of Civil War Sprint Car Racing in year's past. The hosts of this tour span Northern California from the Sierra Foothills to the Wine Country and the Coastal Region and one 44 year old historic track will be bringing the thrill of the Civil War back to its dirt after a several year hiatus.

The Civil War Series will begin on Saturday, March 17 at Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park. In its 44th consecutive year MRP will be bringing back the Civil War Sprint Car Series for two events this year. Following the season opener scheduled for this Saturday, the series will return to Marysville on May 26th in an event that will kick off a North Valley, two track double header for the Memorial Day holiday. In recent years, Marysville Raceway Park has undergone numerous improvements by track promoters Paul and Kathy Hawes and the Civil War Series competitors are already looking forward to returning to the track that was part of the very first Civil War event back in 1993 when the late Mel Hall came together with area track promoters to help form the series that was then known as the "North vs. South Civil War Series." This year, the series will honor Hall in grand fashion as the May 26th event will be the annual "Mel Hall Memorial." The recent Sherm Toller Classic featured unbelievable competition and wicked fast speeds. MRP’s surface was superb for the winged 360s.

Placerville Speedway, the clay bullring in the foothills, will host a total of three events in the season to come. Placerville will host the second segment of the Civil War series on March 23rd. The tour returns on July 4th for the Independence Day Spectacular and will wrap up the Civil War Championship on September 22.

Petaluma Speedway will be the third track the Civil War Series will visit on the schedule. The track on the Sonoma-Marin County Fairgrounds will host three events during the year. The first will be on Saturday April 28 followed by visits on July 7th and September 15th.

Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico will be home to three Civil War Series events in the year ahead on May 27th for the annual Memorial Day weekend event during the Silver Dollar Fair and then the series returns to the popular high banked oval on June 15th and September 5th.

The tour will travel north to the track that always welcome's the Civil War with open arms, American Valley Speedway in Quincy on June 16th.

Calistoga Speedway is California's largest dirt track, a flat half mile located in the scenic wine country on the Napa County Fairgrounds. This year the Civil War Series will return to the big track for the Calistoga Cup on Saturday, August 4th.

Weather permitting we will see you at MRP for the Civil War opener this Saturday.

IMPORTANT: 2012 minor releases must be signed by parents for all minors entering the pits.
