When we first put our car together we discovered that there are certain sbc cranks that have an odd shaped flange on it that hit the motorplate. We ended up getting another crank, one where the flange was more circular than the one that we started with. And that crank hit three different motorplates, so I don't know what was up with it. But that was our solution.
Never hit stationary objects!

Dont use spacers you will screw the alignment of the u joint to the torque ball up. Cast cranks or aftermarket cheaper cranks have a big counterweight on them and you need to have them turned down before the engine is balanced. If you get a mag or aluminum firewall casting they will have more clearance or you can grind them out very easy.

I had an older stock crank that I just had my engine builder turn the weight off of to the same OD of the u-joint flange. If you get it balanced after the weight is cut off there won't be any problems.

Who built your motor? If an engine builder did it (assuming they've done engines for a sprint car before) I would call them and ask why they wouldn't have corrected it!

FYI- Standard round flange for a Small Block Chevy should measure 4-5/16" in diameter. If you have a tang on your flange it won't work.

do it in the dirt

Does the housing have strenthening veins that stick out a little on the inside,or a little extra metal around the area where bolts go thru on the inside? If so that's where its hitting the crank and you can grind just a little off the veins or around the bolt area and your in business.
