I enjoy browsing the classifieds page. I pay special attention to the engines category.

I recently noticed that "open" 360's are almost always cheaper than "ASCS" 360's. Is it possible that "open" is now cheaper than ASCS? Oh, the Irony!

I realize that overall price is the product of numerous variables, such as age, quality, brand name, builder name, workmanship, etc., but per the classifieds page (the open market), "open" is now cheaper than "ASCS".

Race teams, organizations, and track promoters are desperately searching for a cheaper alternative. The 305 class is proof of "dessension in the ranks". Unfortunately the 305 idea isn't much better, yet it proves that people are trying to come up with cost saving ideas.

My question is this; Will the ASCS ask the racers to raise the debt ceiling again in 2012? Or will they find the courage needed to finally attack Kardashian like spending, by implementing real-comprehensive change? Please advise!

I know what you're hoping to prove, but by speaking about used motors, you're basically saying an ASCS motor holds it's value better and doesn't depreciate nearly as much as an open headed 360.

I'm not trying to prove anything nor am I saying that an ASCS motor holds its value.

With that said, I think you make an interesting point about demand verses value.

My goal, is to draw attention to escalating costs and to challenge the status quo.

Simple supply and demand. Not many places to run an open 360. Many many places to run an ASCS 360.

A lot of what you may be seeing with used open 360 engines is that as tracks make their final move to full on ASCS for their 360 class, there are just folks dumping their open 360's and they are probably ones that are for no better term, fairly used up, and there are a lot of them out there.

I am sure there may be other reasons as well, but I am fairly confident that this could be a reason for what you are seeing with prices on the units.

Myabe it's because there is very few places to race an "open" 360. Why would someone pay what an Open 360 may have in it from a parts/pieces/labor perspective if they can't race it anywhere?

I don't think it has anything to do with supply and demand and has more to do with lack of places to race it. IMO, the same thing with "open" motors happened in the late 80's/early 90's when the WoO adopted the 410 rule. Those big engines that Wolfgang, Kinser and Swindell had couldn't race anywhere after that, probably sold for pennies on the dollar....
