I cannot emphasize enough how much I hate and despise what a farce the Chase makes of the season. I don't have anything at all against Tony Stewart, nor any passionate feelings toward Carl Edwards. But it renders the season a complete joke when a driver can be completely buried in the standings over the first 26 races of the season, then get insanely hot over the final 10 races and be declared the series champion.
But NASCAR got what it wanted today, and in past years to a lesser extent. The chase format created phony excitement and a fake battle for the championship where one should not have existed.

i DO NOT KNOW HOW POINTS WOULD FIGURE OUT IF TONY s. WON 5 RACES WITH OLD SYSTEM. i WANTED tONY TO WIN BECAUSE OF HIS OPEN WHEEL ROOTS. i THINK i HEARD CORECT THAT NASCAR HAS 2 FIRST PLACE CHAMPIONS , ONE FOR CHASE AND 1 FOR REG. SEASON. cHECK THIS OUT WITH SOME ONE THAT KNOWS. TONY MUST BE HARDEST WORKIN NASCAR DRIVER. HE OWNS 2 WOO TEAMS AND SOME USAC TEAMS, HE HAS TO TAKE CARE OF HIS NASCAR FANS AND SPONSORS, HE OWN ELDORA RACEWAY, AND IS SPARE TIME HE RUNS SOME SPRINT CAR RACES AND WON A WOO FEATURE THIS YEAR.

LOL, what does completely buried in a series mean? With 43 starters every week one would think a guy would have to be mid to late 30's in points to be 'completely buried'. Get a clue there guy. Tony did what he had to do and did it with a Cheshire Cat grin, good for him. Tony Stewart is a sprint car fan first of all and a sprint racer as a bonus. He is a nascar driver as a job and it pays well so he won't be leaving it soon, when he does he will do much more for sprints, watch for it......

I got a good laugh and enjoyed the comment by smoke, during an interview with waltrip while Edwards and Stewart were sitting there Waltrip asked who was better driver and the two bantered a bit when Smoke said something like comparing wins, and asked weather Edwards had ever won a WOO race

Hey ! what a race, its interesting to note the number of dirt trackers who run up front most of the time.
They learn car control and how to operate in traffic on the short dirt tracks and when the pavement drivers think they are running close, they show them what close really is !
When the tracks get slick the dirt trackers are right at home while the pavement drivers "pucker up".
That check for 5 million seems to help a fella's point of view.

NASCAR does it to sell tickets, nothing more. It's nothing more than hype to build some sort of excitement for that series. NHRA does the same thing. Robert Height finished 10 and won the Funny Car title in 2010. I hope that doesn't happen in short track dirt racing!

singlefile,
Not only do I agree with you, I'll take it one step further. How does Tony win 5 out of the 10 chase races, and end up being tied with Edwards??? Definitely a "manufactured" points race!

Stewart said on TV he learned how to get good restarts from Schatz and Kinser getting his butt kicked running with the World of Outlaws.

carl had a 4.9 place finish average for the final 10 races.
i can't remember if tony had about an 11th place or around a 6th place finish average for the final 10 races. anyway, his average finish was less. i don't know who got more points for leading laps or leading the most laps between them over the last 10 races. still they both scored the same amount of points over the final nine races.
tony scored 3 more points in the last race than carl did. those three points made up for the bonus points carl got for his race win before the chase.
it is not hard to figure out.

You don't want short track dirt racing to sell tickets? If you do something to sell tickets and it does sell tickets, doesn't that mean that you succeeded in pleasing the fans and your business interests? The ones who buy the tickets? The ones who pay the purses? The fans who patronize the sponsors? I am failing to see the negative in any form of racing (or any other sport for that matter) doing something to create excitement and inevitably sell more tickets and merchandise to bolster their sport. They all know the rules when the season starts and if they think it is unfair, then they can find another job.

Did the Chase format sell tickets? Pretty much every NASCAR race all year long, chase races included, were run in front of the smallest crowds the Cup series has had in a long time. It was actually shocking to see some of the crowd shots at NASCAR races this year and realize how many empty seats there were at some of the Cup races this year.
Like I wrote earlier, this thread is kinda like the Bizarro World to me. LOL Most of the time, people on this board seem way too critical and dismisive of anything NASCAR related.

You missed the point, i.e. not rewarding drivers for WINNING races! I don't go to races to watch drivers aim at coming in 7th, I like the guys that are there to win every week. Check out the movie SENNA to see a driver like that.

you must have missed something.
tony WAS rewarded for winning races. he was able to keep pace with someone who was out finishing him on average by being given more points for his wins. when someone wins half the races and crashes out of the rest should they be rewarded better than someone who finished second in every race? just citing a hypothetical example. it all comes down to points no matter what. one guy got his points by having a better average and the other guy got his points by having more wins.
also tony was given the ultimate reward for winning, he won the championship based on wins, not points.
just to let you know i think the whole chase idea and format is stupid, but you can't say tony was not rewarded for his wins this year. you also can't base the championship on only wins. what if a season has 30 races and a guy runs 20 of them. out of those 20 races he wins 10 and doesn't finish the other 10 but still has the most wins. should he be the champion? where should he be scored in season points?
to indy and beyond!!

NASCAR has the "chase" because it has proven to sell more tickets and increased tv ratings late in the season.

I,m sorry but that is a stupid statement!!!!They raced their ass off to get there...i saw nothing fake about that chase.........give them credit..i was at martinsville and watched him pass JJ on the outside and flat outdrive him...wether you like nascar or not i saw plenty of excitement.

NASCAR is awsome...not phony just like chevy winning the last umpteen titles is parity. LOL
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

Settle down there junior, the trigger has not been pulled. I am guessing you aren't Tony's BFF. so........... unless you are psychic, you might want to dig into to the facts before you type your comments. Darian had a job with Hendrick Motorsports for a few years before he joined Stewart-Hass. He signed a three contract. Its expired. If he isn't with the 14 team next year you can bet he will have many other job opportunities with a fresh title around his waist. Don't think there was anything fake or uncomfortable after the race when they were talking and Tony was holding his son.

It was obvious Stewart was more hungry than Edwards for the trophy. He earned every bit of it. What a hell of a driver.
