When the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour rolls into Las Cruces, New Mexico to compete at the Southern New Mexico Speedway on November 11th and 12th, it will be for more than just a combined payday of $9,000. It will be to defend their honor as the best of the World of Outlaws prepare to go wheel to wheel with the best of the ASCS to decided who is the best.
Making his ASCS debut in 2010 at the Southern New Mexico Speedway, Steve Kinser made it very clear that the title of “King” was more than just a word by besting over 50 drivers to claim the $6,000 prize.
As round 2 approaches, the King of the Outlaws will be back to defend his win but he will not be alone as Sammy Swindell will also be present along with his son Kevin Swindell. With the Swindell family, mainly Sammy, providing Kinser with plenty to think about over the past 30 years, things will be made even more interesting as Donny Schatz and Paul McMahan will be joining the field.
Already committed to returning to USA Raceway the week following Las Cruces to defend his Western World title, the 4x World of Outlaws Champion will make a quick stop in Las Cruces to shake down the equipment before heading west to Tucson.
Adding to the list of drivers expected in Las Cruces will be the 9x Knoxville Raceway Champion Danny Lasoski.
Piloting the Mark Burch Motorsports 1m, “The Dude” has been on a roll as of late with the American Sprint Car Series, taking the $2,500 season finale win at the Speedway Motors ASCS Warrior Region at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri and most recently the $10,000 to Winter Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at the famed Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas.
For the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series, the list of drivers making the trip to Las Cruces brings a list of accomplishments that would span for miles.
Leading the way is the Rockstar Energy Drink 57 driven by Shane Stewart. With 12 wins on the season including the Copper on Dirt, ASCS Knoxville Nationals, and the Lone Star Sprint Car Nationals the Bixby, Oklahoma native holds at the time of this writing a comfortable 137 point advantage over the man they call “Hollywood Herrera”.
In his first full year with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour, the 2x Knoxville Raceway Champion may have the upper hand on everyone coming into Las Cruces. Residing just 3 hours north of Las Cruces in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Johnny Herrera cut his teeth racing the Southern New Mexico Speedway (then called Mesilla Valley Raceway), Duke City Raceway in Albuquerque, and El Paso Speedway Park in El Paso, Texas just to name a few.
Not to be counted out at any given time is Jeff Swindell. Coming to Las Cruces for the second time in 2011, the 35 year racing veteran looks to repeat the winning success he had on the opening night of the 2nd annual 305 Sprint Car Shootout earlier this year. Joining his brother Sammy and nephew Kevin, the Swindell family will be out to prove who the number one racing family is.
Brady Bacon and Tim Crawley round out the current top five in the Lucas Oil ASCS National standings. With a pair of wins in ASCS completion this year to go along with the 2011 Knoxville Non-Wing Nationals Championship, Brady Bacon has had a string of consistent runs this year with 15 top 5’s and 23 top 10’s in a total of 34 ASCS starts.
Tim Crawley was in Las Cruces the first time the ASCS rolled through in the early 1990’s. Since then he has earned 3 ASCS National Championships and currently sits 3rd on the all-time win list. Returning for another round, Crawley is looking to improve on last year’s 12th place finish.
