Mono Tube Gas shocks have a single bore that contains a shaft piston with a valve stack for compression and rebound. There is a floating piston that separates gas from oil. When the shock compresses the floating piston with the gas behind it create resistance to force the oil thru the piston as the shaft is compressing the floating piston also moves compressing the gas chamber. When the shock changes direction and moves into the rebound direction the floating piston follows it back out to maintain a cavity free environment.

A twin tube shock has a inner tube that contains a piston that forces oil thru a valve into the outer tube. In the outer tube there is a gas bag wrapped around the inner tube to take up space that is voided when the shock is extended. As the oil level rises the gas bag compresses and helps to force the oil back out in the rebound direction.

The only source of dampening a shock has is the oil so maintaining oil integrity of temperature and not allowing cavitation is imperative to consistency and repeatability.

Thanks so much!!

So is there a definitive answer as to which is 'better' than the other?

Both designs are winning races, it really comes down to a package that works for you. If you would like a more detailed explanation contact me at [email protected] or call (317) 858-8775.
