I watched a winged-sprint car race on the internet a month ago or so. This organization uses a three-wide salute to the fans. Can't remember which group it is, but a major group. I love the WoO, but I really thought this 3-wide looked better, it looked more natural, like it could almost (almost) happen, and it makes 24 cars at 3 by 3 a longer line and more impressive, IMHO.

The ASCS cars do the three wide parade lap.

Well maybe when I was going to the track as a baby in 48 it was for safety, but by the time you started going in 60 it was a tradition. (put a big grin right here) The last track that I know of to keep that tradition was Skagit, who were still wearing white into the eighty's.

Of couse peanuts in the pits was very bad luck, along with a green car.

I remember white pants in the pits in Norcal in the 70's and was told that it was for safety. Not very many pits have good lighting these days and it was a bit worse back then. White pants make everyone just a bit more visible.

I also recall the age and sex pit restrictions, too. It made for more folks in the stands since families weren't in the pits. I guess once promoters figured that they make more money by everyone buying pit passes that restriction fell by the wayside; more the age than sex.

At Hangtown Speedway (now Placerville) where I worked for a few years, we also had a restriction keeping folks with pit passes from being over on the Grandstand side of things. Pit passes back then weren't arm bands, but cards attached to belt lools by a rubber band. If any officials saw someone with a pit pass not in the pits, they just grabbed the pit pass and tore it off the rubber band. I was told that this rule was supposed to keep participants from drinking. Of course we had concession and bathroom/changing facilities in the pits.
