Update from Knoxville Masters Classic/305 Practice Night

There are only three 305s here tonight taking some practice laps but they come from three states. Nebraska’s Matthew Stelzer, who raced here in April; Iowa’s Rob Kubli and Texas racer Brian Carter, better known as CFO for Dirt Motorsports. Carter is here to race his 305 and watch fellow Dirt employee Shane Carson go into the Hall of Fame on Saturday afternoon.

Ricky Logan is here testing his refurbished Don Ott 410 engine and trying to sort out problems that have hampered the team this season. They just got the engine back from Ott’s shop in Pennsylvania. The only other 410 in the pits belongs to Chris Mauer, who is running the car that Kaley Gharst normally runs for Bruce Williams. Mauer hopes to run the Masters but the team’s only 360 is currently slated for action in Gharst’s car tomorrow night in Sprint Invader action at Aledo Raceway Park in Illinois.

There is a good field of Masters competitors here including:

Mark Amenda (make that the Reverend Mark Amenda) making his first start in a Sprint Car in 12 years.

Lonnie Jensen (running the car his son Tige runs)

Tim Gee (he turns 50 today and is the youngest entrant in the field. It was about 1,530 miles for him to get here)

AJ Weaver (making his third Master’s start from Houston, TX)

Randy Droescher (Iowa)

Joe Kouba (he’s racing tomorrow and his son Joseph will run the car on Saturday. Jerry Richert Jr. will run the Kouba 410 on Saturday night)

Bobby Houseman (he’s driving his son Tyler’s car for the first time in nearly ten years. Houseman retired in 1987 after a turn four accident but subbed once for Bobby Thompson in 1997)

Bobby Becker (Nebraska)

Dan Stoutner (71 years of age from Colorado… raced flat track bikes at Ascot in the late 1960s! Knoxville shouldn’t scare this dude)

Ron Rosenboom (making his first start at Knoxville in nearly a decade from Sturgis, SD)

Shane Carson (The defending race winner is back in Larry Weeks’ 00)

Terry Alexander (Knoxville regular)

Unconfirmed reports are that Kenny Jacobs will be here tomorrow night in John Kearney’s 86.

Roger Rager is slated to drive one of Dustin Lindquist cars from last year under the Loucks & Assoc. banner and the car is rumored to be wrenched by Guy Forbrook.

All good things,

Justin Zoch
