Brian Brown – Row Three on Saturday Night!
(Bill W) August 12, 2011 – Brian Brown accomplished his goal on Thursday night of putting himself in contention to win the 51st running of the Knoxville Nationals. With a solid effort that included a third place finish in the feature, the FVP #21 sits sixth in overall points heading into Saturday night. Tonight, he will be a part of the inaugural "Race of Champions" paying $10,000 to win and $1,000 to start.
They say the pill drawn for qualifying can be the biggest hurdle. Though he drew late, the Grain Valley, Missouri driver came through with the ninth quick time of the night in the 54-car field. "I was a little bit worried," he says of his draw. "Sometimes, not much good comes out of being the 52nd car out to qualify. The track didn't blow off as much as we thought, and we were able to lay a pretty good lap down. We were happy to get that out of the way."
Starting seventh in the toughest heat of the year is no picnic. Brian came through by surging to third and locking himself into the feature. "We didn't get the toughest heat of the week to be honest, but there are always good cars in there," he says. "We were able to get up to third. We may have been able to pass Billy (Balog) for second, but at that point, we were in a good spot. I didn't want to do anything silly."
A big part of success at Knoxville lies under the hood, and Brian used a similar combination to last year, when he sat on the pole on Saturday night. "The car was working well," he says. "Everyone was working hard. We had a Don Ott engine in it. It was the same one as last year. It runs great. You get a motor that really runs, and that makes things easier."
Starting sixth, Brian was fast from the outset, but a couple of competitors were eliminated in front of him. "Terry (McCarl) and Stevie (Smith) obviously had some trouble with each other," he says. "We were able to get to third and (Mark) Dobmeier and I were having a good race. He was driving the wheels off the car. I figured he was in the 'win it or wear it' mode, and I was just riding in third."
Dobmeier went on to pass Jason Meyers for a win for the Knoxville regulars, while Brian settled for third and enough points to start in row three tomorrow night. "That was a pretty good spot," he says. "As I've matured, I have raced a little different. Four years ago, I probably would have stuck it in the fence. I knew we had to be in contention to win it Saturday night and I have a good feeling about it. We'll let it all hang out Saturday. They can bring it back with four tow trucks at that point!"
The "Race of Champions" will provide an opportunity to try some things for the FVP #21 team. "It's a good deal," says Brian. "It's a unique thing that Knoxville is doing, and I think it's great. It gives me a chance to do some different things with the car to learn for tomorrow too. We're in it to win it though!"
