Brian Brown – Big Night, Big Weekend in Knoxville!

(Bill W) August 11, 2011 – For a sprint car driver, this is the biggest week in racing. For Brian Brown, it is even bigger! Tonight he qualifies for the 51st Annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals, and begins carrying out his goal of being a National champion. After sitting on the pole last year, expectations are high, but the FVP #21 team is confident heading in.

There will be a new look to the FVP #21 when it rolls into the track tonight. "We're just really excited going in," says Brian. "We've got the new paint scheme that the fans chose. We'd like to repeat the start we had last year and improve on the finish."

Last year, Brian was high point man and sat on the pole for Saturday's championship event. The excitement was genuine, but he hopes to improve on a finish that saw him have tire issues. "It was great to be on the pole," he says. "My crew is doing really good, and the cars have been really good. I think the opportunity is there to do that again."

The Grain Valley, Missouri driver knows there is more to it than just having the fastest car. "It's about luck too," he explains. "You have to put yourself in position all week long. You try to draw a good number, and after you draw your number, you have to qualify well. Then you have to get through that heat and have a good feature. Through it all, you need some luck too."

Brian was crewing when his Uncle, Danny Lasoski won the 1998 Nationals, and now he seeks the same goal. "It's funny," he says. "When you come up here and just start running the Nationals, your goal is to make the show. When you do that, you want to do well. As you have a little more success, your goals get loftier."

The team is not short on confidence heading in. "I like the fact that we have a team to contend," says Brian. "But to win the race, you have to be in the race. We need to do our job tonight to put ourselves in contention to be there on Saturday night. We don't need to be great, but we need to be solid. If we put ourselves in the first two or three rows, we definitely have an opportunity to pull an upset."

Brian's fans were concerned when he took a nasty tumble during the 360 Nationals last Friday and was taken in for observation. "The center of my back received a little bit of a compression fracture," he says. "We were able to race on Saturday, and to be honest, I was fine in the car. It hurts more when I'm not doing anything."

Adrenaline can be a powerful thing in an 800 h.p. sprint car. "We'll go out and do our best," says Brain. "If we do what we need to, we won't even be thinking about it. We're not going to let it slow us down. This is our biggest week of the year. In order for us not to run the Nationals, you'd have to take both my arms and ¾ of my legs."

In addition to his normal Nationals procedure, Brian will also run in Friday's 1st Annual "Race of Champions" paying $10,000 to win and $1,000 to start.

Autograph Session Every Day of the Nationals!

Brian will be signing autographs from 3-4 p.m. each day of the Nationals at the FVP booth beside his t-shirt trailer just east of the ticket office.
