anyone else want in on the bashing of WR Tate

He has been twitting that race car drivers are not real athlete's cause of Johnson's Athlete of the year.

nobody should let a third tier WR on a 3rd tier team bug them by what he says!!! he can't even compete on the football field let alont the race track, he only has to play probably 1 hr of a 4 hr game where Jimmy Johnson has to race the whole 3hr race, i played college football and i run 4 miles everyday, and there is no way in hell i think i could keep a sprint car in a straight line for 50 laps at 120mph!!!!

I tweeted to him that he can say something when he has an NFL TD.

That might be a while. Like GHF says. Who cares what a nobody says about it. We all know better. I have seen many drivers flip 4-8 times, go into the pits, help their crewmen put the car back together and make it out for the B to try to make the A. A little guy like Jac a few years ago came into the pits after finishing a race, told them a wheel cover flew up and hit his forearm a few laps ago and it hurt like hell. They had to cut his suit away and he had a compound fracture. Kinser broke his wrist a couple months ago, had surgery, and, I believe, a night or two later raced and won. If these guys aren't athletes, they are mighty tough as compared to football players making over 10 times what they are and they sit out practice and games with a strained quad, a slight ankle sprain, or turf toe!
Give me a break!

My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

Twitting back us "12th man Redrecks are ganging up on me.' Are we allowed to call him a 3rd string NgR?

Next thing he will say Hockey players and Swimmers aren't real athlete's. lol (please keep in mind my kids are 1/2 African American.

*edit, I think about every kind of race fan has given him hell. From NHRA, IMCA, Sprints, Lates, mods, nascar, go karts. Good to see all hte race fans, drivers and crrew members stick together sometimes.

My son and I were talking about this yesterday and he brought up a good point.......in order to considered a "REAL" athelete, wouldn't you first need a SEASON to compete in??

It's pretty cool to see a race driver get named to such an award, no matter who it is.

Mr. Tate is overlooking an important aspect of the Athlete of the Year nomination. In addition to excelling in their sport the nominees must have a pleasant personality. Whiners, complainers, hot dog end zone celebrators nor those who find themselves in trouble with the law, violators of the NFL substance abuse policy, players that are involved in shootings or wife/girlfriend beating incidents will not be considered. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention sexting former NY Jets employees?

That pretty much eliminates most of your stick and ball pro athletes from consideration. Remember back in the day when racers were the untamed rebels and football players were the clean cut nice guys? Whoda thunk we'd see the day that would ever come full circle? wink

Tate was jealous and instead of congratulating the winner he cut Johnson down. Not worth getting excited about, a lot of people are never going to get it about racing.

Denny Hamlin just challenged "showtimeTate" to any neutral sport, as in basketball, tennis, golf, baseball, and hockey. best of three wins.

I played college football too. I'm a lot closer to driving a sprint car than the NFL. I could do better than some of the IRA guys immediately.

Lots of really well thought out points on this topic. I feel like he did Racing a huge favor. Normally it is journalists who don't understand the sport who are saying it doesn't require athleticism. Now we get a guy from major field sport that is no. 1 in the US as far as popularity. It gives racing people the opportunity to talk in detail on the subject and lay waste to these myths.

I talked about Golden's comments in the Autor Racing Fitness Magazine a couple days ago. I also talked about a study presented at a training conference in Las Vegas where a PHD from Wisconsin got in depth about the intense athletic demands of racing stock cars. If anyone wants the entire PDF, just email me and I'll send it your way.

I played 4 years of high school basketball and 4 years of rugby for East Carolina University. To this day, I still consistantly play basketball and work out at the gym.

I also race 360ci sprint cars for the USCS and WoO's when they are at Charlotte.

If you consider Jimmy Johnson an athlete because he drives a race car, then you have to consider the biggest, fattest, most outta shape hillbilly in southern Alabama an athlete also.

The day that Geoff Bodine introduced power steering to the NASCAR circuit, it took almost all the athletic ability out of racing. You no longer needed to be a man among men, you could be a very hot Danica Patrick and drive a race car with all the other boys.

I agree with Carl Edwards. You dont have to be an athlete to drive a race car, but it doesn't hurt to be an athlete driving a race car.

Plus, if ya'll want a dirt sprinter to compete in a neutral sport with that asphalt late model Hamlin guy, I'd be proud to represent all ya'll hosers!

I don't think you have to consider that outta shape hillbilly an athlete. You don't have to be an athlete to compete in a sport, just to excel at a high level. Look at all the fat, slow, out of shape people who play beer league softball. I played lacrosse in college (11 years ago), and I drive a sprint car too. I fell out of the seat with 5 to go last week. I'm not in horrible shape, but I'm not up to snuff obviously. If it weren't an athletic endeavor, I would not have been sweating buckets and shaking when I pulled into the pits. When I was 22 and went to the gym every day, the racecar never kicked my butt, but I was in great shape back then, nowadays, I really need to start waking up early to run a couple of miles before work if I want to be racing hard at the end of the A main.

There are only 3 "real" sports....Bull fighting, mountain climbing and auto racing. The rest are but games.

I'm not sure if you're proving my point or not! Beer league softball?

I see a lot of outta shape hillbillies sweating buckets on the side of the road paving roads? Athletes? I mean, we could have a sport competition on digging ditches if we could raise enough sponsorship for ESPN!
