Tulsa Oklahoma
(July 4, 2011)- This Saturday night, Oklahoma Sports Park proprietor George
Welch presents the exciting, thrilling and always action packed sprint cars of
the Tulsa based Oil Capital Racing Series. OSP is hosting OCRS for the second
time this season. The previous OCRS tour stop came on May 14th where
Moore’s Whit Gastineau took the third annual Harold Leep Jr. Memorial event.
The win was Gastineau’s third of his four OCRS main event triumphs this season.
Collinsville Oklahoma’s Dean Drake Jr. is expected to compete on Welch’s
lightning quick 4/10 mile clay oval. Drake Jr. won his career first OCRS main
event last Saturday at Mid-America Speedway giving OCRS four different feature
winners in the first nine contested on the 2011 OCRS tour. Current point leader
for the Harold Leep (Sr.) Championship Trophy is Sean McClelland of Tulsa.
McClelland used a fifth place finish to expand his points lead at Mid-America
after Gastineau (second in points) struggled to a 14th place finish.
Third in points going into last Saturday’s race, Owasso’s Matt Sherrell, pulled
in after only two laps regulating him to a 20th place run. That,
coupled with Stillwell Oklahoma’s Rafe Essary’s third place finish, vaulted
Essary passed Sherrell for the third spot on the points chart by 34 points
(660-626). Essary also closed to within 22 points of Gastineau for the
runner-up position. With the amount of points fund being offered in 2011 with
backing by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co; the race for the OCRS
championship will be as fierce as ever.
This
special event at OSP will be quality entertainment for the entire family and
the Welch’s have been producing racing action in the Ada area since 1994. OSP
also provides sections of their grandstands with overhead awnings for those who
would like to be shaded by the summer sun for your comfort level.
OSP is located just 10 miles northwest of Ada Oklahoma on State Highway
3W.

OCRS NEWS AND NOTES
“Just when I think I’m out, they pull me back in”: Former champ
sprint driver and car owner, Rob Forehand, stepped back into a sprint car for
the first time in a couple of years when he subbed for the injured Danny Smith
in the Same Day Auto Repair number 5$ car. With Forehand only receiving the
customary few rounds of hot laps, he ran a respectable 4th in the
first heat at Mid-America then 18th in the main. Welcome back Robby.
OCRS debut times three: There were
three OCRS career debuts at Mid-America last Saturday night with two drivers
having never competed in a sprint car at any locale before………………….
Colton Brewer: The Broken
Arrow teenager made his debut in the Hampton’s Kustom Works #77 champ sprint.
Brewer has been racing in everything from different divisions of micros to
e-sprints the past couple of years. In his OCRS debut, Brewer was 3rd
in heat number two and mustered a 15th in the A feature. The team is
well equipped and with chassis guru Wayne Simmons turning the wrenches,
Brewer’s future looks bright.
Alex Sewell: Cousin to former OCRS shoe
Evan Sewell, Alex, who didn’t learn till the day before he had a sprint ride,
sat in the seat of Kenny Walker’s Eagle chassis under the watchful eye of his
father Andy and Rob Forehand. Alex fought mechanical difficulties where 7th
in his heat would place him in the B-feature. In that race, he missed an
automatic A feature berth by a single spot. Those who have seen Alex wheel a
micro know he has the Sewell pedigree to be successful.
Derrek Wilson: Hailing from Chanute
Kansas, Wilson arrived with a 1994 Gambler to compete in his first ever sprint
car show. Wilson states he has been the points runner up in the factory stock
class at Humboldt Speedway the last four years. He still competes there and
wanted to give sprint car racing a shot. Wilson fought handling difficulties
throughout the night but was excited to participate. Seventh in the B feature
would be Wilson’s result. Welcome to the world of sprint cars Derrek!
Season’s Best: Travis “Hollywood”
Jenkins will be the first to tell you his season has not been as productive as
the team would expect of themselves. Going into the MAS race, the team had
still yet collected a top 10 finish. Hollywood earned a ninth last Saturday to
break that streak. The result could be the shot in the arm the team needs to
return to their normal capabilities.
Andrew Deal’s second at MAS and Shayla Waddell’s sixth were finishes
that equaled their personal best results this season. Deal’s peers feel he is
just on the verge of his first win while Waddell’s peers know the soft spoken
young lady from OKC can run up front with the best as she has demonstrated in
the past.
