Some of the best races I have seen at the PAS is when it slicks off. I'd be courious to know the dates of the races that dissapointed your new fans. I'll put up the highlights and we'll see how bad the race/track really was.

I'm right with you Jeff. I don't like a real heavy track that is just up on the cushion and hardly if any passing happenning. The point is the "new fan" though and all they aee in their mind is dust and that to a NASCAR fan is the #1 reason to not attend a sprint car race no matter how good the racing was / is. I've showed them your video's lot's of times but when I do get them to a track here comes the dust and the complaining.....LOL

Jeff, I too have seen some great racing at the PAS when it's slick but dust is never a good thing, especially when we're trying to interest new fans. And, the dust never seems as bad when I'm watching one of your awesome videos as it did in real time from the turn 1 grandstand.

Jeff is right- a smooth slick track can lead to some awesome racing: but everyone else who commented here is dead on- a dusty track will rarely or never bring the casual fan back, no matter how good the racing. We just had a fan come back to Ventura Raceway a few weeks back after an almost 2 decade absence. He commented during the sprint car main that if he had driven himself to the track, he would have gotten up and left because it was too dusty for him. Needless to say, I do not think he will be back anytime soon.
Also, for those concerned about the extra $5 to park this one weekend- feel grateful that you do not race on the stock car nights when every car has to pay a $40 entry fee just for the privilege to race at the PAS....
One thing I'm trying to do is push everyone who is not planning on attending to subscribe to the PPV this Saturday. At $4.99, it is an awesome value and should be a great show.

you can almost be gauranteed a dusty show if I bring a newbie,I have brought 10 or 15 newbies over the years and not one of them has returned (maybe its me lol) trying to convert a NASNAP fan is like trying to change a persons politics or religion it aint gonna happen very often.
I think the best way to get new fans is get some of Jeff's vidieos out to the Gen. public I have no idea how to do it though.
Sprint car racing is the best damn secret in the country (the CIA could use sprtint car racing as an example of how to keep a secret)

PS this is not a slam at the PAS dust happens and with the wind always blowing I surprised that they ever get a dust free show

I would understand if dust was so bad that you couldn't see the action on track or you physically get covered with dust while sitting in the stands. How often does that happen at the PAS? I remember once a couple of years ago, the wind came abnormally from the west and it got dusty in the stands. Thats the only time I remember in the past 7 years I've been shooting there.
I don't understand that someone coming to a dirt track for the first time would not expect to see dust. I think more first timers are shocked that it is not nearly as dusty as they thought it would be. If I go to a boat race, I would expect to see a big mist of water in the wake in of each boat. If they can clearly see the entire track and no dust is irritating their eyes or staining their cloths, whats wrong with that. It is DIRT.
Also If you bring someone for the first time, and you think that dust may be a concern for them, why sit in a turn where you have a greater chance of being exposed to the dust??

You don't need to tell me Jeff- Our family spent enough time in the turn one stands at Flemington Fair Speedway to know what real dust is!!
It's just in this day and age with the competition for the entertainment dollar, any little thing can turn that casual fan away. Don K. has been doing a very good job keeping the dust down in Perris, but none of us can predict the weather, and with the heat and wind there, its a tough job to get it as good as he does. All we can do is to keep trying to get more fans to the show. More often than not, the track is good, so chances are that they will get a good track. And I bet this weekend with the fireworks crowd at the track, everyone involved is going to do their utmost to show how good a show the sprint cars can put on- it will benefit everyone.

Funny you mention Flemington. Thats where I grew up. When I hear people talk of dust, thats what I revert back to. We used to sit in turn 1 with everyone wearing google and bandana's. Litterally covered from head to toe in dirt. But you know what, if you didnt get there by 5, you stood all night!

Just to let you know, I did what I set out to do. I made some fans for Sprint Car Racing. I do have to agree that to turn newbies into fans we need to sit them in a place where they don't get hit by the mud. Saturday was a great night for newbies. The great fireworks show, great food, great racing and great friends made for a fun and enjoyable evening by all.
Thank you to the PAS and everyone involved in last night. My group (which ended up being 19) really had fun.
Next race 7/30 I am bringing more newbies and I hope they have as much fun as this group.
I love my sprint car racing.
RIP Chet and Mark. You might be gone but never will
be forgotten.
