NCRA Sport Mods Doing Double Duty This Weekend!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Park City, Kansas – June 14, 2011 - After spending last Saturday night in the Texas Panhandle, drivers in the Bob Howard P.D.C. and Mopar National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Smiley's Racing Products southern sport modified division now set their sights on a pair of events in the "Sunflower State." With these two events also comes a three way battle for the top position in the point standings as just five points separate the top three drivers but still early enough in the season where anybody in the top ten still has a shot at the $2000 to win points championship.
It all kicks off this Friday night, June 17th as the tour makes their first appearance since 2009 at Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kansas. Not on the schedule last year, the inaugural season for the tour saw a pair of events on Kerry Gorby's quarter mile clay oval with Robert Elliott of Clinton, Oklahoma picking up the victory in the first ever appearance at the track on June 6th. Later that year it was Elk City, Oklahoma veteran Randy Thomas picking up the victory on September 19th.
Officials and drivers will then head west to the home of the NCRA, 81 Speedway in Park City on Saturday night to kick off a big two day, all NCRA appearance at the track and the "Hoosier Daddy" Father's Day Spectacular. The southern sport modified division will have top billing for their second of four appearances on the 2011 race season with the tracks weekly divisions also competing.
The series' sprint car, modified and Great Plains late model divisions will be competing on Sunday night at the speedway, which will also be the annual "Steve King Foundation" night with many events planned throughout the day and evening.
Coming out of west Texas the tour saw a new points leader as inaugural series champion Chad McNamara of Blackwell, Oklahoma will come into this weekend with a very slim five point lead over the tours career leading feature winner, Travis Johnson of Enid and defending champion Todd Decker of Edmond. Brandon Smith of Amarillo, who picked up his first career series victory at the season opener at 81 Speedway back on April 2nd and held the points lead, lost it last weekend as his motor expired during his heat race. Brandon currently sits fourth in the point standings, still only 115 points out of the lead with six events still scheduled. Brandon is also tied with South Coffeyville, Oklahoma driver Kinzer Edwards in the Triple B Oil Field Services of Elk City rookie of the year point standings with Edwards sitting fifth in the point standings.
Ross McCartney of Lahoma, Oklahoma has seen a season of consistency and currently sits sixth in the point standings, followed by rookie contender Devein Gerrior (Broken Arrow), Landon Maddox (Fairview) and rookie contenders J.D. Choate (Ponca City), the most recent feature winner on the tour, Kelly Cross of Amarillo. Zachery Tippett (Newalla) and Bobby McGehee (Drummond).
Five events have been held thus far this 2011 race season with Smith, Randy Timms, Johnson, Elliott and Cross all reaching victory lane.
Friday nights racing action at Caney Valley Speedway will see pit and grandstand gates open at 5:00 PM with hot laps starting at 7:15 PM with racing scheduled for an 8:00 PM start time. The track is located 0.8 mile west of the junction of US 75 and US 166 on CR 1600. For more race and ticket information contact the tracks office (620) 330-0485.
