"LAST MAN STANDING TROPHY DASH" ADDS SPICE TO SATURDAY'S USAC/CRA SANTA MARIA SHOW
By Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA – JUNE 13, 2011… When the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series return to Santa Maria on Saturday, June 18th, fans and racers are in for a treat. Track promoter Chris Kearns, in partnership with Rugged Radios of San Luis Obispo have produced a special "Last Man Standing Trophy Dash."

The format for the special $1000 winner-take-all event is simple. The top 4 qualifiers that transfer out of the heat races are eligible to compete. The drivers will pick a pill for their starting position in a 4 car / 4-lap dash. Once completed, the last place finisher is eliminated and the 3 remaining cars battle in a 3-lap shootout. The third place car will be retired and the last round will have the two remaining drivers compete in a 2-lap sprint. The winner will claim the $1000 top prize.

The Santa Maria event is co-sanctioned with the new USAC Western Racing Classic Series. USAC/CRA is led by Yorba Linda's Matt Mitchell who won the "Salute To Indy" at Perris Auto Speedway on May 28th. Mitchell is followed by Temecula's Mike Spencer, Yorba Linda's Blake Miller, David Cardey of Riverside, Visalia's Greg Bragg, Torrance's Rickie Gaunt, and Nic Faas of Huntington Beach.

The USAC Western Racing Classic Series is led by Lincoln's Tony Hunt who scored the "Al Pombo Classic" victory last Saturday night at Madera Speedway. Hunt is followed by Scott Pierovich of Alamo, Fresno's Audra Sasselli, Clovis' Luis Ramos III, Fair Oaks' Shauna Hogg, and Sebastapol's Geoff Ensign in the point chase.

Local 360 iron-block powered Sprint Cars are welcome to race with USAC/CRA. The 360s can run their local approved tires (all four corners must be Hoosier), but must meet series tech standards and race track muffler rules. The Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series does not have an entry fee or charge for transponders, but drivers must have one-way radios. In addition, the series is offering a bonus to the highest finishing 360 team. To be eligible for the $200 cash award from USAC and 20 gallons of methanol from So-Cal Performance, the owner or driver must have a current USAC membership.

Santa Maria Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange at 1900 Hutton Road in Nipomo, California. Also on the Saturday card will be the Toste Construction Mini Stocks, American/Enduro Stocks, and USAC Ford Focus Midgets. Adult tickets are $20, Senior, Military, and Student tickets (13-17) are $18, Kids tickets (6-12) are $6, and Children’s tickets (5 and under) are FREE. The Pit Gate will open at 8:00am, Front Gates open at 4:00pm, Time Trials at 5:00pm, with Racing to begin at 6:00pm. For more event information, visit the track’s website at www.racesantamariaspeedway.com or call (805) 922-2232.

The Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series would like to thank Hoosier Tire, Circle Track Performance, Competition Suspension Inc., DJ Safety, Donovan Engineering, Electro Tech Powder Coating, Extreme Mufflers, Hilborn Fuel Injection, Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror, Keizer Wheels, Saldana Racing Products, Sander Engineering, and So-Cal Performance for their support. Great way to wreck a car and waste a thousand bucks. Why isn't this money being put in the purse?

You obviously were not at the King of The West show at Santa Maria a month ago. The last man standing was fantastic and the crowd got really into it. Oh by the way not one car was tore up in that dash either. He tries to do something really cool that the FAN'S enjoy and gives a driver some extra dough and all you get is a person that bitch's about it. Guess you can't please everyone.

Trophy Cup......Best race of the year hands down!

Is this the kind of attitude we can expect from "the new new usac"?

Purses are at an all-time low and our new promoter is spending a thousand bucks on a gimmick show. Tell me how thats going to bring anymore cars to the track?

Even though Mr kearns Deducted a thousand from the KWS purse saying stands were not full, when it was a packed house., the last man standing was a great race and not one car was damaged. The SM fans were on their feet during this format. As far as USAC, no one said you have to show up and support their series or even support CK. Thats why we live in the good ol USA cause we are allowed to make choices. And as far as it bringing more cars, i doubt it will. But the fans will get to see one heck of a shoot out for a 1000 dollars.

Chris, unfortunately you can't please all the people. I was at the KWS race and the last man standing was one of the most exciting races I have experienced. I spoke to Tim Kaeding after the race and he said it was the most fun he has had in a long time. Allard said the same thing. It may be a gimmick, but for us fans, what a great gimmick. I can't wait to be there Saturday to witness this.

Keep up the great work with USAC.

Uh, I dont know who you are, but "Mr Kearns" did not deduct a penny from the purse. As a matter of fact, I payed a higher purse than what was emailed to me by the KWS.

GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU POST STUFF YOU DONT KNOW ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!

This is not a gimmick. All $1000 goes to a racers. It doesnt go to a fan, that picks the winner or catches a frisbee. You are confusing a gimmick with an Awesome paying trophy dash for the 4 fastest qualifiers.

A thousand bucks to one guy when you could use that money for tow money or bump the bottom of the purse or how about spending that money to get those wing guys to run this weekend but like i said we get a gimmick race that will benefit one guy. I guess i'm just too old to get it.

I don't understand what the problem is. This is a great thing that CK isn't obligated to do, why bash it?

Chris, this guy is a jerk. This is exactly what racing needs, some added excitement. As stated earlier by someone in this post, everyone was on their feet for this during the KWS race. If I recall properly, there were 3 attempts at the start for the final between Allard and Kaeding. Kaeding spun on one of the attempts and the crowd went wild. It was the most excitement in the crowd that night. Keep it up.

And for Derp's information, YOU (CK) did not have a sponsor for that race so you took the money out of YOUR pocket to give to the driver. Most promoter's would have canceled that race without a sponsor. Hats off to you. I hope the other USAC promoter's follow your lead. Keep up the great work.

Hey Chris, gotta stop listening to the peanut gallery. Do your thing, fans in the stands and cars in the pits let you know you got it right.

I can understand that you are thinking about the racers. Nothing wrong with that. I have to think about the racers and the fans. Just trying to promote. Sorry you disagree. Just trying to Promote and make it an exciting night of racing for everyone.

Not sure we can get any better than the Trophy dash at the KWS race, but you just never know!!!
