Holiday Double Header Awaits OCRS Sprint Car Enthusiasts In Green Country

Tulsa, Oklahoma (May 23, 2011)- Memorial Day weekend is upon us and with that brings the first summer holiday of 2011. As is traditional at this time of year, we salute those brave men and women who have given their ultimate sacrifice for their country and for those of us that enjoy our liberties, thanks to them. MDW is also historically recognized as a premier weekend for auto racing beginning with the first Indianapolis 500 that took place on May 30, 1911. In “Green Country” Oklahoma, racing is just as solid as a tradition as anywhere in the country.

This edition of the annual holiday weekend finds the 360c.i. winged sprint cars of the Oil Capital Racing Series set to pull a holiday double with events at the historic Thunderbird Speedway on Friday followed by a visit to Creek County Speedway in Kellyville on Saturday night. The last time OCRS held a MDW double header was in 2009 where Danny Smith of Sand Springs was king at Outlaw Motor Speedway then Moore Oklahoma’s Frank Dittman stood tall the following night at Oklahoma Sports Park in Ada, Oklahoma.

Thunderbird: OCRS returns to Thunderbird after a previous stop a month ago where current OCRS points leader, Moore’s Whit “The Gasman” Gastineau, took the win that began a ‘three peat” and he hopes to make Friday’s event four in a row. Dating back to the last two OCRS events of 2010, The Gasman has won the last 5 of 6 main events contested. The night will also be a memorial tribute to Callie Slader, the young daughter of co-promoter Dennis Slader, who recently passed away. The night is simply known as “Callie’s Night”. There will be a large release of balloons in Callie’s honor and fans are welcomed to bring their own balloons on a volunteer basis for the release as well.

With Gastineau’s strong runs as of late, he cant shake his competition in obtaining any kind of breathing room in the chase for the 2011 “Harold Leep” championship trophy. Sitting just five markers behind the Gasman is Owasso native Matt Sherrell (329-324). Sherrell, while looking for that first win of 2011, has parlayed constant solid finishes into a rewarding position in the point standings. The same goes for Stillwell’s Rafe Essary who is only ten points behind Sherrell. Thunderbird’s long straights and wide turns make for sleepless nights for engine builders who try to get the ultimate power out of their creations without fail.

Thunderbird Speedway will begin hot laps at 7pm with racing action firing off at 7:30 pm. OCRS drivers are to register at the OCRS trailer upon arrival and receive their driver meeting information.

Creek County: OCRS hasn’t turned a wheel on Creek County Speedway soil since the 2008 racing season during a dual main event program featuring winged sprints (Cody Cordell) and non-wing sprints (Mike Goodman). On Saturday night, that will all change as OCRS returns with the best core of Champ Sprints found in the region. Promoter Jackie Green and OCRS officials entered into an agreement recently that brings back the OCRS warriors to the ¼ mile bullring. “We will put on a show for the fans that will make them want to come back”, said Green. OCRS president Barry Grabel is equally upbeat. Creek County Speedway has produced some of the tightest and closest racing action anywhere we have visited,” said Grabel. “We expect to put on an awesome show on that track. Fans can come out and watch us on Saturday night and enjoy the Indy 500 on TV the next day.”

Creek County Speedway will be round number six of a 22 race tour that sees OCRS visit eleven different tracks as these sprint car warriors travel throughout Oklahoma and Kansas looking for the ultimate test of skill and speed. With car counts the highest OCRS has seen in recent years, there will be plenty of challengers for the center podium position. Fans coming out to the event will have the luxury of an enlarged parking area recently added by the CCS staff.

Gates open at 4pm with hot laps set to start at 6:30pm. Racing action begins at 7.

Directions: Take 211 exit off I-44. Go south to HWY 66, turn west go 1 mile to track
