MIDGETS PREPARE FOR MAY 26 “NIGHT BEFORE THE 500;” STENHOUSE TAKES “TOYOTA CHALLENGE” OPENER AT TRI-STATE
Tony Stewart Racing leads the standings in the $25,000 2007 Toyota Challenge” after Ricky Stenhouse’s sensational victory in Saturday’s 30-lapper at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. The 2007 “Toyota Challenge” champion will receive $15,000 following races May 26 and June 16 at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Ind.
The 62nd Toyota “Night Before the 500” at ORP is next on the National slate and Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif. will lead the series into that race following his third-place finish in Saturday’s race at Haubstadt, Ind. Hagen is 22 points ahead of defending National Midget Champion Jerry Coons Jr., who finished fifth at Haubstadt.
Stenhouse, of Olive Branch, Miss., trounced the field at Haubstadt, leading the final 20 laps in his Chevrolet/Bass Pro Shops Spike/Chevy after passing Davey Ray on lap 11. Ray led laps 1-3 and 5-10, yielding only to Hud Cone on lap four. Cone, however, finished second ahead of Hagen, Brad Kuhn and Coons.
Bobby Santos III is he defending winner of the “Night Before the 500” Classic and former race winner active in 2007 include Michael Lewis, Ron Gregory, Aaron Fike, Dave Steele, Ted Hines and Mel Kenyon.
