Brady Bacon – That's Racing!
(Bill W) April 19, 2011 – The weekend at I-30 Speedway was not what Brady Bacon had hoped for. The Lucas Oil ASCS National Series can have some rough nights, and the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver struggled to 17th and 13th place finishes each night. This week, he will regroup by driving for the potent Wilke-PAK Motorsports team in USAC National Midget action at Dodge City Raceway Park in Kansas.
Brady is thankful for the two partners that have joined the Brady Bacon Racing #99 team in the past couple weeks. "First, I have to thank Oilfield Equipment and Manufacturing for being on board with us," he says. "They are our newest partners along with Fatheadz Sunglasses."
Things started last Friday night with a heat draw outside of row three. Things went sideways (literally) in a hurry. "I got underneath someone a little too straight," says Brady. "I gassed it to get the car turned, got sideways, and I caught some good racetrack. I did a little 'Tommy Tipover'. We were able to turn it over, start in the back and pass a couple of cars, but it wasn't enough to make the A."
Mired in row four on the heavy surface, Brady struggled to a fifth place finish. "We struggled in the B," he says. "We changed some things with the car and put some things in that had really worked at Devil's Bowl. They didn't work so well at Little Rock."
Brady was forced to take a provisional, but fortune smiled on him there. "Actually, we wouldn't have been able to race if the winner of the second B (Robert Sellers) hadn't been disqualified for his nose wing being too far forward," he explains. "We didn't count on taking a provisional at I-30, but I'm sure Tim Crawley didn't either."
The Sellers DQ allowed Johnny Herrera to grab the last transfer and made Brady eligible. He would still struggle, however, finishing 17th from the tail. He feels new ASCS competition director, Matt Ward, and his officials did an excellent job last weekend. "The National guys know the (nose wing) rule, but it hasn't been checked a lot in the past," says Brady. "I thought the officials did a great job last weekend. Everything ran about as smooth as it could have both nights."
The car performed much better in Saturday's finale, but a tough heat that included Crawley, Danny Wood and Tony Bruce Jr. starting in front made it hard. "We went back to our normal setup for Saturday," says Brady. "The track was pretty fast in our heat race. We had some good cars in the front of our heat. Once we got to turn one, it was pretty much over."
A fourth place finish put him back in a B, where he drove from fifth to a second place finish. "The car was really good in the B," he says. "It was really fast in the A too, but we only made a lap or two before we were part of a scramble on the front straightaway. No one actually stopped, but it backed us up. I nudged the back of Jason Johnson and that knocked our nose wing off.
Brady would survive for a 13th place finish. "The car just got worse and worse as the race went on," he says. "That was working against me. The track was just rough enough, that I couldn't get around without the nose wing on."
The 2010 ASCS Ronald Laney Hard Charger of the Year is looking forward to running in Dodge City, now run by ex-ASCS competition director, Tommie Estes Jr. "We're going to run the USAC National midget race in Dodge City for Wilke-PAK Motorsports," says Brady. "We ran for them a couple of times at Sun Prairie (Wisconsin). We had some motor problems one time, and got rained out the other, so I am really looking forward to this weekend. Hopefully, it works out much better."
With two weekends off of the ASCS tour, Brady is optimistic. "The car is fast, we just need some things to go our way," he says. "Things didn't work out too well for us at Little Rock, but we'll be back."
