For Immediate Release Midgets back in the Southern Plains When John Stewart retired at the end of 2010, the Southern Midget Racing Series effectively died. Things didn't look good for midget racers in the Oklahoma, north Texas and Central Kansas areas. However, Choctaw, Oklahoma's Cody Brewer wasn't ready to give up. Working with his father, long-time sprint campaigner Ken Brewer, Cody has decided to form a new group and keep the midgets racing in the region. The Southern Open Wheel Series National Midgets has set a 2011 season that shows six dates in three states for April, a single race May 21 at Creek County Speedway in Kellyville, Oklahoma and a joint show with POWRI at Springfield, MO on June 11. Then it's six dates in July, leading up to the Belleville Midget Nationals. "This is a totally new organization, but I do want to give credit to John Stewart for all his hard work and dedication over the last 15 years in trying to keep midget racing going in this part of the country" Cody states. Ken will actually run the shows, since Cody will be racing in them and trying to do both "just doesn't work all that well." The purse breakdown is set at $1000 to win, tapering down to $140 for tenth on down for any car taking a green flag. Eco-Tech midgets will be very welcome to compete with the group and there will be a $100 bonus to the highest finishing Eco-Tech for all of the Oklahoma shows. The best way to track developments with the Southern Open Wheel Series right now is through their Facebook page, at [email protected] or contact Cody by email at [email protected] 2011 SOWSNM Race Schedule (Indicates co-sanction, if any) April 8 Thunderbird Speedway, Muskogee, OK April 9 West Siloam Speedway, West Siloam Springs, OK April 22 Dodge City Raceway Park, Dodge City, KS (USAC) April 23 Dodge City Raceway Park, Dodge City, KS (USAC) April 29 Valley Speedway, Grain Valley, MO (POWRI) April 30 Lucas Oil Speedway, Wheatland, MO (POWRI) May 20 TBA May 21 Creek County Speedway, Kellyville, OK June 11 Springfield Raceway, Springfield, MO (POWRI) July 22 Brill Motor Speedway, Meeker, OK July 23 Enid Raceway, Enid, OK July 28 Soloman Valley Raceway, Beloit, KS (POWRI) July 29 Junction Motor Speedway, McCool Junction, KS (POWRI) July 30 Junction Motor Speedway, McCool Junction, KS (POWRI) Aug 5 Belleville High Banks, Belleville, KS Aug 6 Belleville High Banks, Belleville, KS
