“TOYOTA CHALLENGE” OPENER AT HAUBSTADT SATURDAY; WEASE GRABS IOWA’S 25-LAP MIDGET FEATURE
This Saturday’s “Toyota Challenge” opener at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. is next on the USAC National Midget calendar. Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif. will take a 14-point lead over Bobby East and defending series champ Jerry Coons Jr. into the event after finishing ninth in Saturday’s “Casey’s General Stores USAC Triple Crown” 25-lapper at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa.
Billy Wease of Noblesville, Ind. won Saturday’s Iowa race, leading the final 13 laps in his K & N/Performance Trailer Gerhardt/Esslinger Ford. He was trailed at the checkered flag by East, Marc Jessup, Tyler Walker and Brad Loyet.
East led the first four laps, then Tom Hessert III led the next two. On lap seven, East returned to the point and stayed there until Wease made his winning move on lap 13.
Saturday’s Haubstadt race is co-sanctioned by POWRi and a 30-lap feature is slated on the 1/4-mile dirt oval. The race is USAC’s first for Midgets at Tri-State Speedway since Lonnie Caruthers won there in 1980. It kicks off the 2007 “Toyota Challenge,” which continues May 26 and June 16 at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Ind.
