Citrus County Speedway Sprints into First Place With A Confirmed Non-Sanctioned Race For 2011

Official Message From Citrus County Speedway:

Citrus County Speedway has reached and agreement to run an unsactioned sprint car race on 2/5. This race will not be run under any series or club affiliation. We are trying very hard to make this work for ALL involved. With that being said, everyone needs to put their own egos, personal agenda's, and politics asided if they want to have asphalt sprint car racing at all this year. Everyone involved with asphalt sprint car racing needs to do all they can to support this event. If not, this will be the end of sprint car racing at Citrus for a very long time. Please contact Tony Carreno for any additonal details at 813-267-3710.

Message From T. Carreno Below:

To All Sprint Car Drivers And Owners

In the recent days the only pavement race during speed weeks being held at citrus county speedway was cancelled. it was very depressing news. ive made a few calls in the last 24 hours and i have 13 confirmed drivers as of right now 1 week away. i really dont understand the problem with the purse.. $4500 is being put up by citrus an additional $1000 has been added making the purse $5500 as it stands right now.. it will pay $1000 to win with the rest of the payout to be posted this week. I know that there is alot of owners and drivers that refuse not to run for that purse, but if they do that will be the purse that they race for forever. people, have you looked in the stands lately when youve been at a short track.. DUH! There not packed, hell you wonder how some can even afford to pay the light bill. bring the Cars, Bring the Fans, The purse will increase with time! Be part of the solution, Not the Problem. This is probably one of the last asphault races that you will see for awhile. This is a non sanctioned race! No memberships No Dues No USAC hard cards Just straight up lets get it on Racing!

THE RACE HAS NOT BEEN CANCELLED THE RACE IS FEBRUARY 5TH CITRUS COUNTY SPEEDWAY!

T. CARRENO

If any other people are interested please let us know. 813-267-3710

list of drivers will be posted this week.

OPEN tire RULE but Tires purchased from David Steele He will Donate $15 Per Tire back to the PURSE.

It's painful to see that kind of a purse for a sprint car race, but it is apparent that the racers and promoters need to work together on that deal. For those trying to make it work, they may want to talk to the guys from the Sprint Cars of New England. That group has probably seen the best growth of any series in the country in the last 5 years. They didn't do it with a lot of many, and the purses were nothing to write home about, but they believed in what they were trying to do, and it has paid off with decent car counts and a fan base that comes out to see them race. One important note is that none of these guys was going out there with a win at all cost attitude. No one ran new tires every week, no one had a killer engine. Basically no one spent more on the car than made sense. If one guy came in with the best of everything and won every week, that may have killed the deal. That may still happen, but I hope not.

They use to have larger purses but the sprints are not putting fans in the stands. Basically all the Florida tracks got together and said, here's what we're willing to pay. If you can come up with sponsorship for a larger purse, great. Apparently that didn't go over well with some owners/drivers and they refused to race. Sprint owners are blaming the tracks for not promoting and tracks are blaming the sprints for not promoting. Normally, I'll side with the cars and drivers but in this case, I understand where the track owners are coming from. They are actually losing money by having the sprints race at their tracks. No extra fans in the stands, no tire or fuel sales, and they have to cut a regular division to fit the sprints in. The sprints say they have too much money in their cars to race for such a small purse but who's fault is that. At the last TBARA race at Citrus, they had the sprints scheduled after a 50 lap late model race. After the late model race was over, fans got up and left. They announced there was the sprint race to go but fans continued to leave. Can you blame the tracks for not wanting to pay more?
