Sad news coming out of Texas this evening, Howie Sewell passed away at his home from a battle with cancer. God Bless Howie Sewell and his racing family all across the land.

Such very sad news. He was the first driver I had ever bought a race shirt from back in 1984 at Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee after a NCRA champ dirt car race.

Great racer and sportsman. Always enjoyed interviewing him. He loved everyone and was a great ambassador to the sport. We will miss "the jet". RIP Howie and our prayers are with your family and friends at this time.

i was fortunate to know Howie a long time. when i first moved to Sand Springs(1974) a man up the street from me named Earl Crew owned a super driven by James Eubanks. i went up there one day on my bike and was standing out in the yard listening to the car idle and enjoying myself. the car shut off and a voice from inside said, " hey, come here" so i went in and it was Howie. he said " i need some help" and handed me a screwdriver and said to hold it....i stood there and did as i was told while he started the car and adjusted the carb. when he finished he said thanks and took the screwdriver having never used it....he was making a 10 year old kid feel important...around 1980 i began to scrape mud on the 53 car and carry fuel and once in awhile i got to turn a bolt or two or get a tire off the trailer but i had a blast. i met alot of people that i still know well today through Howie and enjoyed it all....from time to time i would see Howie at work as he was a rep for NAPA engine parts and he was the same guy everywhere you saw him. once we were at a Tulsa Speedway banquet and at the same time upstairs was a NAPA convention....The napa convention had free beer so Me and Howie would go up, load up arms full of Napas beer and go back to the banquet.....fun times and there are alot more....Howie, you will be missed....................

To All,
I remember the first time I really paid attension to HtD it was at OKC winternationals on Sunday afternoon, he was driving Buzz's car and everybody was running right around the bottom but HtD, he was bouncing off the guard rail driving by most everybody it was a pretty spectacular drive. Later on in '82 I had a chance to spend a couple of years racing with him and I can tell everybody he was a piece of work, he could wear you slick talking and come up with some of the goofest stuff. We tore up alot of stuff in '82 & '83 had a lot of fun doing it and won alot of races, anybody going to Lawton back then will remember the EWELL & SEWELL show, in '83 I think they won all but 5 of the 30 or so A-Features that year at Lawton. HtD had some funny manorism's he would always tap on the valve covers with his fingers after The Old Man ran the valves asking him if the valve covers were tight, it drove The Old Man nuts. Hill had a motel deal with the Habana Inn on 39th street and hooked HtD up with a room on Friday nights, one night Htd went to get ice and he had that kinky hair and those 2 differant colored eyes and some guy patted him on the butt, he started hollering June,June as he took off for the room, I had warned him about that place !!!!
I learned alot about motors from him, he was a pretty sharp engine guy, he was alot of fun. HtD if you get a chance go by and see Indian Tom & Pat just don't tap on them with your fingers!!!!!
RIP!!!!!!

Who gave him the nickname "The Jet" ??
Was it Jack Claxton? Because no one could say it like him.
