OVAL NATIONALS SATURDAY FORMAT TWEAKED TO ADD EXCITEMENT!

(OCTOBER 28, 2010, PERRIS, CA) When the nation's number one traditional Sprint Car race, the 15th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals, kicks off next Thursday, November 4th, fans will notice one important change to the racing format. Actually the change will not come into play until the final night of racing when the B Main is eliminated and replaced by three Final Heat races.

The move has been developed to add excitement to the program and give the best chance for the top drivers to get into the 40-lap A Main event. In the past the B Main on the final night has been 20 laps with 24 cars and the top 12 finishers transferring to the A Main. The field gets strung out and some of the top drivers have encountered problems with lapped cars costing them a chance to get into the 40-lap finale.

"We are going to replace the B Main with three eight-car 10-lap final heats," promoter Don Kazarian said. "The top four finishers from each heat will advance to the A Main event. In the past, quite a few top drivers have had problems with traffic and not gotten to the A Main. We had a couple fans suggest this to us last year and it makes sense. This should ensure a stronger A Main event lineup and it will be 10 less laps of wear and tear on the cars and drivers who transfer. And, it should also add excitement to the program. Instead of one intense fight to get into the A main event, we will now have three!"

The Thursday and Friday formats will remain unchanged and will consist of qualifying, five eight-car 10-lap heats races (top finishers cars from each heat will transfer to that nights A Main), 10-lap C Main (top four from the C Main will transfer to the back of the B Main), 12-lap B Main (top four from the B Main will transfer to the A Main) and a 25-lap A Main. The fastest six drivers who transfer out of their heats will be inverted in the first three rows. Rows four through 12 will be lined up straight up by qualifying times.

Saturday's show will consist of a 20-lap C main with the driver who is 31st in points starting on the pole. The top six finishers from the C Main will transfer to the back of the three qualifying heats (two per heat). The qualifying heats will be lined up by points with the driver 13th in points from the first two nights on the pole for the first heat, 14th in points on the pole for the second heat, 15th in points on the pole for the third heat and so on. The top four finishers in each heat will transfer to the 40-lap A Main event. The first six rows of the A main will consist of the top 12 point drivers from Thursday and Friday. The first three of those rows will feature the top six in points and they will be inverted. The last six rows will be the twelve drivers transferring from the final heat races and they will be lined according to how they finished the heats.

Does anybody know the time schedule for each night of the Oval Nationals (i.e.: When do the gates open, what time does the ever-exciting wheel packing begin, what time does qualifying start, what time is the first race scheduled to kick off)?

I do not have a complete time schedule in front of me, but the gates will open at 4:00 PM on Thursday and Friday with the facinating world of wheel packing starting a few minutes later. Gates open at 3:00 PM on Saturday and there will be an on track autograph session for the first hour.

The pits will be open during the daytime all three days. However, those without a pit pass will have to leave when we sweep around 3:00 on Thursday and Friday and 2:00 on Saturday

Scott, speaking of added excitement does the fairgrounds frown upon organized events after the races on Friday nights, similiar to Chico's Gold Cup and most recently Tulare?

Thanks Scott. Now for my next question - How are the points awarded for the Thursday and Friday night racing? Do you have any thing that you can send indicating the number of points for fast qualifying, finishing order in the heats, and finishing order in the Mains? My email address is [email protected].
