if your racing for fun,not worried about points. What is better,a short list of A mains wins in a row or a little longer list of top 5's in a row?

There are a lot of things to consider if you want to do the question some justice.

Did you crash and spend a bunch of $$ on repairs on the races you don't win?

How is the purse distributed? Top heavy? Nicely divided among positions?

Are you after style points... so anything other than a win is a loss?

If you're looking at a true Outlaw schedule... running top 5 sounds like a plan to me. The bottom line will take care of itself if you watch what races pay. Sometimes you may know in advance that you have to finish top 4 or top 2 or whatever to make the $$ you want.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I recall a HoF caliber driver talking about his car needed to bring in on average X dollars to stay on the road.

With expenses today... depending on how far you're traveling, hotels, etc. that would vary greatly.

A car owner likely looks at what the car needs to average per race dollarwise, what races are available, how much those races pay and where the car needs to finish to make that much $$$. If the odds of the car finishing in that position or higher are good... go to the race.

If not... you make the call.

If 30 cars are projected in the field... I truely don't believe in 29 losers raced that night. There are a LOT of racers that don't "race to win" as has been mentioned above. Everyone has a different goal. Top 5, top 10, lead lap, gain experience, etc.

It's too cold to say "win it or wear it" or '2nd is the first loser".

Whether the night is a success is up to the car owner and driver to me. Their opinion trumps all IMHO.

I think Some Guy in Texas says it well - it is in the eye of the beholder. I have run across many drivers that are just so happy to be driving they could give a shit less where they finish. Then there's the opposite side of the spectrum with the drivers that absolutely, positively feel that nothing besides winning is acceptable.

I can give the perspective of both driver and owner. Keep in mind that I have never driven for a living, just a weekend warrior from the midwest, so my opinion may not be the same as a "professional" driver or hired guns.

As a driver there was only one thing that mattered - Winning! I don't have to think twice about that answer. Winning was always the only thing that mattered when I was young, bullet proof and not paying the bills.

As I grew older and more mature as a driver/co-owner (I was 31 when I became a co-owner and had been driving sprints for 11 years), top 3 finishes were good enough to pay the bills each week. I can tell you that being a car owner and paying the bills changed the way I drove the car altogether. I no longer had the "win it or wear it" attitude. I was happy to load the car up in one piece and know that I didn't need to buy anything other than fuel, oil filter and rubber for the next week (I distinctly recall at times thinking that it would be cheaper to hang back than try to race side by side with certain guys). Wins were still important, otherwise I can't imagine being in the sport. I'm just saying that I wasn't nearly as disappointed with 2nd - 5th place finishes as I was earlier in my life.
