Elliott Motors to Elk City NCRA Modified Victory
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Elk City, Oklahoma – August 27, 2010 - In a season full of struggles and disappointments on the O'Reilly/NCRA southern modified trail in 2010, Clinton, Oklahoma veteran Robert Elliott finally put it all together Friday night in nearly the same fashion as which cost him the victory in the season opener back in March at the same venue as he picked up his third career series victory at Elk Citys I-40 Speedway in Elk City, Oklahoma.
Justin North and Kevin Snow started on the front row for the twenty lap feature finale with North jumping into the lead at the start. But it was all for naught as the caution quickly fell for David Lloyds spin on the back stretch.
The second attempt was much better as North repeated his quest for the top position and jumped into the lead. Elliott, who started third aboard the Artic Air Refrigeration/Western Oklahoma Tire & Service/MRP Racing Products sponsored Rocket Race chassis, quickly moved into the runner up position and used the bottom of the three-eighths mile oval to challenge for the lead.
But North used the top side of the track to stay out front until the second caution of the night fell when David Lloyd, Jr. spun in turn four on lap three.
The restart saw North pace the field but Elliott was right on his rear bumper before he used his Dunsworth Machine power to drive underneath the leader coming out of turn four on lap five. However, North would not go away quietly as he retook the top spot the next time around down the back stretch.
It was still North your leader up top and Elliott no less than one car length behind down low at the races midway point while behind them, Snow, current series points leader Dustin Buntin, Doug Gillespie and Ronny Gould all battled for third through sixth.
The races next caution would wave on lap twelve when Harley Menacher spun in turn four. Then one lap after the restart, Gillespie and Gould waged battle for the fifth position down the backstretch when both cars tangled sending Gould flipping off of turn three. Gould was uninjured but done for the night.
On the restart the two front runners continued their battle for the lead and on lap fifteen, Elliott got a run coming out of turn two and out ran North entering turns three and four and to keep the lead.
Elliott would begin to open up a five car length lead and despite two more cautions in the last five laps, would hold on to take his first victory of the season by six car lengths.
"The top was really a lot better but it was a little rough up in turns three and four," said an elated Elliott, who lost his chance at victory at the track back in March when passed with just a hand full of laps to go. "I could always get a pretty good run there in turns three and four and that's where I finally got him. I really have to thank Daniel and Gary (Dunsworth) as they have put up with a lot of my whining and really put in a lot of hours to have this motor run good."
North would have his strong run end in disappointment as he slid high in turns three and four with two laps to go and lose several positions allowing Buntin to finish second. Randy Sallee had his Ramirez Motorsports car working good as he started tenth and came home third. Gillespie came home fourth while local driver Rick Pittman started 22nd and worked his way through the field to round out the top five.
Elliott, Gillespie and Snow took home the three, eight lap heat races for the twenty-four car field.
