Bobby Gerould has taken it upon himself to contact his friend and owner of Quality Sound, Don Otomo. Don is THE guy who provides the Oakland Coliseum with their outstanding sound system. Apparently Don is a huge race fan because he is donating his time and equipment to this year's Louie Vermeil Classic. Bobby and Don are working hard to make sure they have everything ready for next weekends races.
If you read Bobby's recent article on this message board, you know how much he cares about this sport and it's obvious that he isn't one who will just sit by and hope that other people will step up and save it. The really special events take a lot of people doing things like this to make them come together. Everything from the tents, lights, auction items, wineries, breweries, PEOPLE, and now the sound system are donated or volunteered. This is all done in the hopes that the fans and racers will leave at the end of the weekend with great memories and looking forward to coming back next year.
A few teams in Southern California have held recent fund raising events in hopes of travelling to Calistoga. Bobby's article talked about the upcoming Gold Cup and how some teams that usually run the event might not be able to afford it this year. There is still time for you the fans to do a little fund raising and hopefully get your favorite team to the track. You might not be able to raise the kind of money that a team needs to perform at the Outlaw level, but it's not always about the money. You'd be surprised at how you can change the attitude of a team that might be on the fence. Show them how much you really want them there and hit every business you know until you can buy them a couple of tires and they might just find a way to get the rest.
As for Bobby, I think he really wants the race fans to feel like they got their money's worth or maybe he just remembers what it was like listening to his dad call an exciting race when he was a kid. I know I do.
Thanks Bobby....and Thanks to all the staff, crews, racers, and fans who go that extra half mile.
