Brian Brown – High Point Man!

(Bill W) August 13, 2010 – Brian Brown emerged from Thursday's qualifying effort at the 50^th Anniversary Goodyear Knoxville Nationals as the high point man (484). He heads into Friday night's A Scramble to determine where he will start Saturday night's $150,000 to win finale. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver was able to qualify fifth, finish third in his heat, and surge from fifth to second in the main event on Thursday.

Drawing your qualifying order pill is paramount, but Brian and the FVP #21 team overcame a mediocre draw to time in fifth in the fifty-car field. "It was very satisfying to qualify well, especially where we were in the order (25^th out of 50)," he says. "It's really a testament to the hard work my team has put in week in and week out here at Knoxville. My crew chief Chad Morgan is really dialed in. We've been on the same page here for awhile."

Starting outside row four, Brian would need to get himself in the top four in ten laps to qualify for the main event. "We were able to get up there and get by Bill Rose for third fairly early," he says. "The Dunkin family did a great job with the track. By the fifth heat, there was plenty of room to move up through there. We were able to get by Seth (Brahmer), but then Sammy (Swindell) had such a good run on us on the bottom. We settled for third."

Starting inside of row three, Brian cruised until lapped traffic became a factor in the 25-lapper. "We were kind of riding in fifth there for awhile," he says. "I knew when we got to traffic, that we would be good. Once we got in lapped traffic, we were able to get by Dale (Blaney)."

On the white flag lap, the only caution of the event came out, and Brian would restart fourth. Stevie Smith would get by him on the restart. "I made a mistake there on the restart and let Stevie get by," he says. "Fortunately, we got another chance."

Another caution came out that would set up a white-checker finish. Brian would drive from fifth to second on the last lap. "I could see (second place) Donny's (Schatz) right rear was down, so he was going low. I just had a really good run on the top to get by Stevie and Skip, and they got caught up a bit. We were lucky to get that last caution. I'm excited that Skip and I were there on the podium, and that we have five of our Knoxville regulars already in the show Saturday night."

Regardless of how Brian does in the A Scramble Saturday night, his starting spot will be a career best and have him in position to win sprint car racing's biggest prize. "It's what you aim for. It's what you think about year round," he says. "Putting yourself in the best position possible for Saturday night. It's an honor, and a tribute to Chad, Kelby (Hopkins), Derek (Beckman), Grandpa (George Lasoski), Snook (Glenn Wignall), Jacob (Engel) and this whole FVP team."
