Opinions on slide jobs. Good or bad. Seems to me sliders are a way of life in non-wing races, most of the time in wing racing, sliders are often referred to as dirty driving. Discuss

Dirty driving? its only dirty driving when the driver behind you doesnt let up! They are an art-form in sprint car racing!!! Sometimes the best part of the race!
I'd rather be in Knoxville.

The worst slide job that I've seen was at the Nationals a few years ago when Wimmer tried to slide Kemmenah and things went bad. What's ironic is that they both had transfer postions into the A main and mayhem happened.
When executed properly, it's a beautiful thing.

Slide jobs in lapped traffic is as good as it gets. Not dirty, just hard racing.

That kind of slide job I now refer to as a "Wimmer".

It's part of racing. As long as the guy that puts the first slide job does not get pissed when the other driver returns the favor. I agree with Rail it's a thing of beauty when it's done right.

Brian Brown into Randy Martin at the 2007 Knoxville 360 Nationals was pretty bad.
If there weren't any slidejobs there might not be much passing on a lot of nights.

a real job."

Slide jobs....
They are part of what make open wheel (sprint cars, winged or not and midgets) great and more exciting than NAPCAR...
The good ones can do it and the less thans can't...
but saying that it seems that it takes two to pull one off... if the lead car doesn't give an inch it will usually pay for it....

The object is to make sure you are going to clear the car in front of you before you commit yourself to the slide job, if you make contact then its your fault!

For the folks that have never been in any kind of race car, you will never understand. If a car gets under you and in front of you (meaning that you can see a guy either beside you or in front of you from the cockpit) you only have 2 choices. You have to understand and judge the speed of the other car trying to pass you, if he's faster and in front of you at any point he has the position, and you must either lift and dive back under him or follow him throught the corner or stay in the gas and hope he doesn't collide with you. When done properly it is a beautiful thing.
No doubt both Wimmer and Kemenah can flat wheel a race car. Wimmer was far enough beside and in front of Kemenah to make/attemp a pass, unfortunatly Kemenah did not lift and they both destroyed their race cars. At the same time Wimmer missed judge the corner entry and left very little time for Kemenah to make any reaction, which resulted in a bad "slider".

having raced a little I still stand by my statement that if your going to do the slide job you need to be sure you can pull it off.

Spoken like a true Sammy Swindell fan - at least you are consistent. The real tragedy is that Kemenah didn't - with whatever energy he had left - beat the living shit out of Wimmer after that deal. Much like Sammy should have been carried out on a stretcher after he took out half the field on the first lap on Friday night at Santa Maria WoO in fall of 1992. Some times people are far more civil than the circumstance at hand really calls for. Quick thinking and good security gave Steve Butler the opportunity to retire in similar circumstances after a "slider gone bad" instead of suffering the fate of an angry mob at an event and track that escapes me but is definitely not a story I'm fabricating for dramatic effect. If you are going to make a move that requires the guy you are attempting to pass to make the decision to lift you should do so with the knowledge that if you don't pull it off - if you don't clear them because you are just so BAD fast - that you stand the risk of getting the shit beat out of you if you screw it up. If this was the standard applied to "slide jobs" it would be a "self policing deal".

Jack Hewitt could take care of any faulty slide jobs that came his way (after the race)

I agree. It's the guy pulling the sliders responsibility to clear the car in front of him and leave the guy enough room to race, not the slidee's resposibility to lift so he doesn't get hit.

The best slide job I ever seen was about 8 years ago at I-55 in Pevely, Mo....the "home" of slide jobs....Stevie Smith pulled off the best slide job Ive ever seen on Steve Kinser...Steve led the whole race until the last corner...Stevie pulled it off, Steve had to lift and Stevie took home the money! They interviewed Steve after the race and Steve simply said it best.."thats just racing! One year when the Outlaws made an appearance at Lake Ozark Speedway Steve Kinser and Paul McMahan put slide jobs on each other nearly every turn...one of the most exciting races Ive ever seen...if I recall Steve won that one on a last corner slidejob of Paulie!!

Steve Butler had Bill Rose cleared, and Rose choose to drive back around the top. That one was Roses own fault.
